So there IS a Marjorie!

I've watched all of Season One And Two, and have truly loved the names some of the characters have, as they are often names that were popular in the 50's and 60's but which one doesn't hear so much anymore.

Peggy, Lois, Betty, Bobbie, and so forth.

I've been thinking: Hmm, the only quintessential 50's name they've left out is.... Marjorie. How many little girls named Marjorie will you find in a preschool nowadays? Not many, I'd wager.

But you know, I am wrong: I just rewatched Episode One tonight. Peggy's roommate in Brooklyn is named Marjorie!!!

How about Madge??

....also, Linda and Karen....

.....The next-door neighbors were devout Catholics. Fortunately, so were we, at that particular moment.

They had a daughter named "Peggy," and they sometimes called her "Peggle....."

user-pic

.....Also present and ubiquitous, at that time were Sandys, Lisas, Monicas and Deborahs.

Don't have to go beyond my siblings,,,
Mary,
Patricia
Elaine

Thomas
Eugene (Betty's father)
James
Robert
David

I'm guessing we won't see any new characters on MADMEN named Kaitlyn, Hunter, Madlyn, Kody, Bree, Tiffany or Brandon.

.....or Britney, Miley, or Madison.....

Or the trendy "j" names for boys: Jason, Joel, Jared, Jacob, Jackson, Jeremiah, I'll probably think of some more

user-pic

Mambo, now you're sounding like The Duggars!

heeee

Jeremy!

Or Ashley or Savannah. Or any of the movie star's kids such as Apple, Tahlulah, Rumor, Scout, Redmond or Shiloh.

I have various students named Unique, Latrine, Chestoria, Diamond, Ruby, Emerald, etc. (No cubic zirconia as yet!) Also Major, Captain, Starr, and Why-O-Me-a. My favorite is a little guy from Uganda named Jesus Christ Mercedes Benz.

.....Latrine?!.....now those parents should be shot at sunrise!!!

It's probably "LaTreen" or something but she pronounces it latrine. I guess you all have heard the apochryphal story about the lady whose baby was named female. She pronounced it "Fee Mah Lee". I guess she didn't have a name ready when it was born so the hospital put female on the birth certificate and the mom thought the doctor had named the baby. Urban rumor or fact? Who knows.

well, don't guess anyone will ever top Moon Unit Zappa (daughter of Frank)....

...but, then, consider the mind of the namer....!

Shiloh Pitt. What can I say.

Whar about Shirley? Shirley Temple was really big back then. So was Amelia and Dorothy

user-pic

Then there was all those names like Darlene, Marlene, Darla, Imogene, Frances.

And those 1950's style combos like Peggy Sue, Betty Lou, Mary Lou, Bobbi Jo, Betty Jo, Betty Sue, Bobbi Ann, ad.inf.

My Dad swears he knew a woman who named her daughter Margarine back in the early 60's. But peonounced it "mar-ja-REEN"

user-pic

....well, at least they didn't name her "Oleo" which some poor unfortunate woman somewhere -- of our "Boomer" generation -- IS probably stuck with!

I knew some twins once (born in the 1920's) named Uler and Zuler! AAAAhhhhhh.....
