And deservedly so for the BAFTA...We are currently at Don's Californian sojurn over in the UK.
It's the summer of '63 JFK's assasination is just around the corner and Vietnam, the Counterculture, Feminism, Riots, Civil Rights, Students and the Beatles are about to hit the USA. Lets keeps this great show on track for several series. Imagine DD with purple velvet trousers and long hair!!!
Thanks for the info SCfan. Great news. Mad Men is somewhat marginalised over here. Sometimes I think I'm on a one-man promotion campaign for the show in Britland-but things are starting to look up after the BAFTA. Great comment by old man Cooper last night 'You can't trust the Brits' Wonderful!!! Stay cool.
...you, too, English Paul (Stay cool, that is)...wish the posts were audible...I know it's a hackneyed saying, but I really DO love hearing a British accent...
You mentioned seeing MM on a Tuesday night...do you get MM on Tuesdays there, or do you DVR it (and you just watched your recording of it then)?
Hi SC...MM goes out on Tuesdays at 2200 hrs local time. Its on BBC 4 which is often reffered to as an 'art-house' or documentary channel which is fine by me! I usually try to catch the original and tend not to record.
Great to hear you love a Brit accent-we have many different accents and dialects here yet most actors and public figures tend to disguise their original accent and speak with an accepted BBC type voice! There are exceptions with Scots, Welsh, Irish and some Northerners such as Sean Bean who keep their home dialects.
I am from Merseyside (Liverpool) home of The Beatles, Rex Harrison, Kim Catrall and Daniel Craig. We are natural mimics so can take on most accents-Daniel Craig used to live about a mile away so I probably sound similar, sort of deep and nasal!!
Let me know where you are from, I generally love American accents and always try to guess what State/City the accent originates from. Stay cool!!
...Oklahoma...and no, we don't all sound as "accent-y" as Reba McEntire! I guess if I had to choose, I'd say I sound about like Vince Gill's "accent"...just barely discernable as being from Oklahoma. I don't think Garth Brooks even comes across as even having an accent...and neither does Carrie Underwood....and maybe Toby Keith has one....hmmmmm...
I love her (Reba) and am very proud she's from my state, but she does not speak like the majority of Oklahomans....just sayin'.....
Of course, people with accents almost never think they have one...just the folk who listen to them talk think so!
ha!
Well, that Liverpudlian (sorry if spelled wrong!) accent is one of the best of the British accents...old Beatle-maniac talking here! I used to love to listen to the Beatles (esp. George) speak.
Is Michael Caine's accent Cockney? I love that one, too! Or maybe just because it's coming from him! sigh...(crush goes back to his Alfie days!)
Wow...Oklahoma what can I say, I'm sure its all been said before in a song (oops!) George had a fantastic voice, singing and speaking; he and I are known as 'Scouser's'. Kim Catrall fondly tells anyone who'll listen to her that she's one as well.
Michael is very, very Cockney and proud of it too-he's from South London or 'Sarf London' as he would say. Yes, a smashing accent and such a fab film, Alfie. Great to hear you love The Avengers and The Prisoner, me too. I live a two hour drive from the 'Village' and occasionally go on pilgrimage. Keep in touch...EP
So, the "Village" they used in The Prisoner is still around, huh? Do they charge folks to tour it?
And is it being used in the new Prisoner mini series with Jim Caviezel? I believe that's going to be on AMC next winter or sometime....
I think I just read somewhere that Patrick McGoohan was American born and raised in Ireland and Britain...learn something every day...one sure couldn't tell from listening to him speak he had any American in there at all.
Of course, Elizabeth Taylor and Bob Hope are a few of our "imports", I think.
P.S. Paul was my favorite Beatle, but I think George was really the most talented.
I love to hear him sing "Here Comes the Sun" and "All Those Years Ago" to name only two....also "Handle Me With Care" and all his collaborations with The Traveling Wilburys...that was a great album.
So sad that we only have two left now of the original "Fab Four".....
Hi SCfan...The 'Village' is still intact-at a place called Portmerion in Wales. They charge about £10.00 each to wander around-nice to take a picnic or better still go to one of the Prisoner Conventions they hold, I think annually.
I really don't know if the new series or indeed the movie (with Ian McKellern) is being made there-like the original series a lot of secrecy surrounds the project. I don't see why not, the place hasn't changed since 1968. The biggest problem for any production or tourist is the weather!
You're right on all counts about Patrick, Liz and Bob. Patrick was born in New York, returned to Ireland with his parents and moved to Sheffield, Yorkshire when he was 7. Liz and Bob were both born and raised in London. The other Patrick, McNee is a spendidly interesting character. Now 87, another Londoner, he has always believed that he is descended from Robin Hood! How about that for an Avenger's episode with Mrs. Peel as a green velour clad Maid Marion!!
Dame ( female eq.of 'Sir') Diana Rigg has aged gracefully into a beautiful lady, occasionally appearing in British costume-dramas ie. Dickensian/Romantic period pieces.
I am keeping my meeting with a Beatle till we reach 1968 in MM-the year it occured. Stay cool in Oklahoma!
Yes, your'e so right about the Beatles-so sad there are only two left. We Scouser's tend to feel the loss of our fellow men and women quite hard. I can still remember where I was when I heard of John's death and then went to the unofficial memorial service in Lime Street, Liverpool. It was bleak, cold and incredibly fraternal-probably just like it was in New York, his second home.
When George died I went and signed the book of condolences at the Town Hall and was surrounded by weeping women-George was the girl's favourite Beatle over here. R.I.P to both.
How interesting, to be right in the thick of things (British-wise that is!)
I've been on YouTube recently looking at videos of both Dhani Harrison and Julian Lennon ("Much Too Late For Goodbye") as well as Sean Lennon --stunning resemblances-- all 3 -- to their fathers!
And they all have singing voices almost IDENTICAL to their fathers, esp. Julian.
Spooky almost....and sad...I've always felt sorry for Julian...kind of shunted to the side and Cynthia, his mom as well....I don't understand why he hasn't had luck in music...his voice is wonderful...he seems to have turned into a fine man, from what I can tell.
Don't know that much about Dhani (other than his physical, and vocal, strong similarities to his father)
I think it was wonderful and an example of their friendship that George spent the last times of his life in Paul's home...he wanted him there to help care for him.
I'm sure they all felt a bond that was unbelievably strong, going through what they did together all those years ago.
And deservedly so for the BAFTA...We are currently at Don's Californian sojurn over in the UK.

....and those round thick-glass pale green "sunglasses" eeeeewwww
You probably know, English Paul, that Matt W. has stated before he plans to go 6 seasons....I guess to about 1970 (if the 2 year skips continue)
I hope even longer, of course!
