I saw JON HAMM last night........

AMC and Lionsgate hosted a screening last evening with a Q & A panel and a cocktail reception after. Matt Weiner and all of the cast attended. Sal Romano and the 2 other young guys (can't think of their names) sat in the audience but the major/main characters were on stage for the Q & A. Now here's where it gets interesting. EXCEPT for Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks everyone was exceptionally tiny in varied ways. John Slattery is SHORT, I mean 5'4" short, Vincent (pete campbell) was very THIN, so much so he looked elfin. He was wearing a light beige suit, with a pair of boots (odd choice). The boots caused his rear pant legs to get tangled up in them and it looked like hell to say the least. He had 2-day beard growth with makeup over it...not a good combo. I don't have much to say about Elizabeth Moss except she too was very scrawny and plain looking...not that different from her character. January Jones was also VERY skinny but that's the norm for young Hollywood girls today. She's perfect as Don's Breck-Girl wife, but when not in character I'm not impressed with her looks. She also came off a little whiney while on the Q & A panel. As my friend said she didn't come off as being that bright. Christina Hendricks was very pretty, a real red head with a creamy complexion, who looks MUCH YOUNGER in person. She had on a nice business suit but it was obvious she was wearing the same undergarmets they make her wear on the show as she looked all trussed up. Jon Hamm was in a suit and was just as gorgeous in person. However, he's NOT 6'2" as reported. He might be 6 Ft but my friend thinks he was more like 5'11". The cast gets the new scripts today (tuesday)and will start shooting in May for an August premiere. Unfortunately Matt Weiner wouldn't say what year it will be when the new season starts.

Headless Gal: Thank you for your post. Is there any other info you can share with us? We are all so interested in details. For example, is there anything else Matt would not say? What are some of the questions they would answer?

user-pic

How tall are you? LOL, you must be a giant! (kind of joking)

John Slattery is NOT 5'4''. I met him when he was in Rabbit Hole on Broadway and I am 5'5'' and John stood at least 6 inches taller than me. He is not short in any way. Just an average height for a guy.

user-pic

.....Anyone got a copy of the guest list? Which AMC'er (or whoever) had entree to an actual Mad Men soiree?

user-pic

.....P.S......Word has it that Christina is actually a natural blonde.....

user-pic

....Congrats to Jon and Jennifer re: Points West (WHAT points West????).....

What a wise wiggle.....

user-pic

Yep, Dry, CH says in her biography on IMDB that she's been a redhead since age 10.

I think she makes a very natural-looking redhead myself, don't you?

user-pic

No offense, but you come across as really catty here. Why don't you mention what was actually talked about instead of focusing on their looks?

default userpic

Agree with janeeyre. I am grateful that you take time and tell us about your experience, but honestly, stop slam down on the actors looks. It´s not as interesting as hearing what they had to say.

user-pic

I also agree we'd all like to hear about what was asked/answered at the thing....also, did you get to go to the cocktail reception and rub elbows with any of the MM folk?

Please post pics, too, if you took any...we are all dying to see.

I, for one, can't fault any of them if they didn't look like they do on MM at a special event...what with the perfect lighting, makeup, camera angles, gorgeous cinematography, they are shown at their best...but, I bet they looked dandy even just "as themselves".

With the exception of DD, the two dueling male supports, the women characters's roles have different functions, and the organization of the drama has a unique style and pace. The secondary group of young male-men, college educated, don't reject them. state i live, public television etc. imitate the well funded networks and declare narrow versions of truth in tiny forms.

user-pic

I'm sorry, Gericault, but I have read your post about 6 times, and I still have no clue what you are trying to say. Perhaps it is just me, but I don't believe so.

I am glad the Mad Men actors look nothing like their characters when seen off screen. It keeps the mystique of Mad Men alive. When reality intrudes upon the make believe, it spoils my enjoyment. Mad Men would not be half so wonderful if Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were in the leads - however well acted, I would always know I was watching Mr. and Mrs. Pitt.

I suppose, if what you're saying is true, Headless Gal, and Jon Hamm and John Slattery are both short, then they truly are excellent actors. Don Draper and Roger Sterling come across as a couple of tall and gorgeous males, at least that's the view of my corner of the couch.

user-pic

This is a blog, you can post what you want--
I found it interesting. If you want PR spin, read a scripted bio.

I am 5'11" and got to stand next to Jon Hamm at a party once, he is easily 6'2".

default userpic

I agree with janeeyre and SCfan - what did they talk about? I am counting the days until Season 3!
If what you say is true - the cast members are giants!! (I am 5' and lost 1/4 inch last year.) Please try to remember what was discussed.
And.......I'll take the bait: how did you happen to be at this screening???

Love to all Maddicts

user-pic

....Hi there, GerryFromToledo, wierd question, but, did JH smell good (when you got to stand next to him)?

Somehow I always figure he would just smell great....like wearing some classic, light -- but sexy -- men's cologne that's sort of musky yet refined....sigh....got carried away there.....well, did he?

And did he make any cute small talk as you two stood next to each other?

(You have to understand we Maddicts, well this Maddict, anyway, are desperate for any -- I mean ANY -- MM trivialities at this point!)

user-pic

.....I'll third rubadon and SCfan.....Details of the discussion would be great.

SCfan.....The real question is, did he smell like frosting?

user-pic

Yeeeeaaaahh....chocolate FUDGE frosting....sigh

Jon Hamm and Chocolate.... a combination made in Heaven....

user-pic

.....Gurl, you need to get out' the house more!!

And, not to be superficial, but centimeter-for-centimeter, I still say Christina Hendricks is one of the most perfectly sculpted beauties I've ever laid eyes on.

Someone should do one of those scientific analyses, you know, with the protractor-thingy or whatever?

(Duh, it's all computerized now, Dry!!)

user-pic

Dry M., there is not a "nerd" on this planet that would not gladly put aside his computer to have a go at Ms. Hendricks with his protractor-thingy. Heck, I'm not even gay, and I wouldn't mind seeing her in some birth of Venus pose. Would be like looking at one of Mother Nature's masterpieces.

user-pic

....Ha! Witty comeback, z.....good one!

You know, I read that she felt ugly for years, which just makes me rail that much harder at the bizarre self-esteem issues imposed on women by our crazy culture.

I love her as a redhead because - let's face it - not many women can carry that off and look authentic, but I would like to see her natural blonde coloring at some point in the dimly-lit future.

Like the Venus, this is one woman who needs no gilding, and only has to stand there to be magnificent.

user-pic

.....Sorry, SCfan.....I know you are a blonde-to-red-convert too, and I'm sure you look just smashing.

By the way, I've been re-watching Season 2, and I gotta tell you, if they don't yank that damned plastic strawberry-colored contraption off Joan's head, licketly-splickety, I'm hitting the warpath.

It's worse than the worst toupee I ever saw!! It's a totally different color from her real hair, and looks cheap as hell, and I'm surprised she would light up a cigarette anywhere near that thing.

Sorry, Gloria! I love your work, but that horrid, florid thing's gotta go!!

user-pic

I know! Worst hairdressing piece ever! I thought I was the only one who noticed that atrocity, Dry M. Such a distraction from all that loveliness, and what a difference from Season 1. It really ages her, I think. Is that why they did it, to make Joan look older than Jane? We already know she is, why inflict that hairpiece on the poor darling? She is already afflicted with the rat doctor, how many more horrors must she suffer?

user-pic

....I repeat - a work of art needs no promotion.

Pewiod.

Are you listening, Christina???

user-pic

.....Yeah, z, I felt they dragged her down to such a level as to portray her as desperate and slightly laughable.....outrageous and unjust!!

Imagine my outrage when my own hubby-beau instantly declared JANE hotter than JOAN.

Believe me, that guy got a hot earful and an entire essay on the matter.

Which is ridiculous and bad. She is a real gem, a mover and a shaker, and she deserves better.

With three seasons to go (we hope), all I can say is "Go Joan, Baby!"

user-pic

But don't you all think the that's the point, to make a mockery of Joan's looks, to make her look old and undesirable, because they don't fit the growing fascination with skinny "girls", not voluptuous women? I do believe a statement is being made. She's approaching her middle 30s, and MM is shining a light on the culture that tosses women aside as they reach that age.

user-pic

Thought of something else:

Don, who is is a few years older that Joan, is portrayed as still a gorgeous hunk who can get any woman he wants. Joan has to settle for an unhappy marriage to a creep and settle for her pretty much dead-end job.

user-pic

And Dry, your hubby-beau proves my point! I do think Joan will emerge victorious, though. She, Peggy, Freddy and (if he straightens up) Don will get the spoils by series' end.

user-pic

....Dry, me being a "blonde-to-red convert" .... that's the only thing I've got that's even remotely Joan-Christina like (well, sorta like her "chest-wise"...but not nearly that magnificent!) although I was one of those (bottle redheads) long before I ever knew she was one, too! (even if mine (natural color) was what is referred to as "dishwater blonde" not brown and not blonde, just bleh (to use one of your fave terms) so the red was a big improvement....I found a pic of her as a blonde on the Google images pages --about the third "set/page" of pics, I believe...still gorgeous...but, she looks better "red" I must say...flatters her creamy skin!

user-pic

...and I don't have any trouble with my hubby switching from his Joan fascination over to Jane or Betty or..... (I've posted before (ages ago) on one of our earlier Joan-loving forums about "his eyes trying to bug out when she's onscreen" and he "attempts to stifle"!)

I don't think any of the other MM gals register in his vision!

Can't blame the man....I agree with z up there, I'm not gay either, but I know an eye-poppingly gorgeous woman when I see one.

user-pic

....I have to agree with you Dry, about your hubby-beau...Jane?????----- over our Goddess Joan????

Get him some new glasses!

....and, I agree with you about the doll-hair hairpiece they had her wearing...at first I wondered if it was because she had to have brown hair (the part of her hair you can see below that mess) for some other off-MM-season role but...it's just U-G-L-Y, hope they fix her up (or rather just stop uglying her up!) to her former perfection next season!

user-pic

Everyone, while we're still on "Joan"...did you all see the recent AMC "Blog" piece on her taking that TV reporter on the ride/tour through her town of Twin Falls?

Check it out if you haven't yet...it's worth it. I'm not wild about the beret, but, she's adorable in the video.

user-pic

.....Sigh.....I hope so.....

No, I didn't but thought that whole publicity deal she did there was so sweet, and strikingly effective.....

She's a peach.....

user-pic

.....Mambo....Yeah....It crossed my mind, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.....

SCFan-

As I recall, he was very well dressed, but do not remember any fragrance lingering about. I will say that we spoke for a few minutes and he was a spectacularly nice guy. Usually guys that handsome are a little (or a lot) full of themselves. i recollect that he seemed kind, patient, and decent...

user-pic

Thanks, Gerry!

Good to know from an "in person" observer, but that's one of JH's great charms...he's utterly spectacular..... and he doesn't even know it!

SIGH...... SIGH.....

..................sigh

Thanks again!
