Talk: Mad Men: April 2009

Don, Anna, and Noir..

Ok gang here's one of those not really relevant but personal observations that is just fun fodder for off-season talk. Most people hate long posts but in the offseason they're actually good because it keeps things going until late July.

Back in the day in college i was an art major and took a bunch of film classes, so naturally a bunch of noir. This past week on TCM I caught "The Dark Corner" with strange enough Lucielle Ball in a non-comic role, and Maccao. Today I also caught what I thought was a good film, "Mildred Pierce". It's not noir but the beginning sequence, however, was very, very noir.

So today someone was saying how "Lost" is some greatest show blah blah, and I was like, ohh noo, Mad Men is where it's at my friend. So like most of you, I got in the mood and put MM in because there's nothing on and Mad Men never gets old. So, something interested me:

I put in The Mountain King, where Don visits Anna. And after seeing it more than once it just kind of made me notice: The whole line of Don and Anna, not literally/visually/ but, conceptually, is actually very noir if you think about it.

They're both very shady in this whole deal. They both have this mutual acceptance of usery that they both gain from. Very noir. They're using each other, and both in a bad way; yet conflicting have an affection.
And when they initially meet, it's in some dive tenemet and right away she's confronting and fiesty yet is prepared for the possibility of violence and obviously accepts that and does it anyway. (you could easily black and white it and change the lighting to rather ominous and it would have worked). Then when Don finally confesses, she could say anything, but instead of being distraught or emotional she simply says..."Well, Dick, what am I going to do with you?"

Chess game, advantage the Lady. Again, very noir.

Ok now obviously she is hardly femme fatale which is a staple of noir, but what i got from re-watching that, is that I'm thinking that Mad Men is while not precisely going off-track, however for this little bit is a tangent kind of paying homage to the noir genre in it's own way like a lot of films do with original genres.

The best example of that is in the Kevin Costner flick, "The Untouchables" with the baby carriage going down the steps homage to "Battleship Potempkin". And there's a ton more (that I love in film) which film buffs will add here...

And what really got me is when Don knocks on her door, and Anna brings him in, and after the kid leaves, the small talk is very minimal yet instead of expressing some excitement, she says... "are you in trouble?" That's her first thought after small talk and greetings.

That's what got me. This notion of metaphorical and emotional darkness.."Are you in trouble?" That's what's on her mind after not seeing him for years; and yet that's normal for these two.
Think about that, that's totally noir in concept, for these two.

Volume of commercials

Why do you blast my but off the chair when the normal programming is interrupted by a commercial? This appears to be happening only on AMC...

1964?

I'm sorry if this has been covered before but... what are everyone's thoughts about jumping to 1964 in Season 3? I had a hard time going from '60 to '62 and now '64 just seems like too far ahead for me. I'm sure Matt Weiner will do a spectacular job no matter what year MM takes place but, much of the appeal for me has been the early '60's-preBeatles lifestyle. Thoughts?

News Update

http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2009/04/mad-men-season-3-amc.html

Jon Hamm makes People magazine 100 beautiful

I saw the end of a news report on one of the entertainment shows this evening. I'm surprised the info hasn't made the forum yet. They said it is his first time on the list. I did not see the whole thing, so I hope I got it right. Did anyone else see it?

WHEN DOES SEASON 3 START??

Oh wait.....

I guess it's not quite the same thing.....

NEVER MIND!!!!

I saw JON HAMM last night........

AMC and Lionsgate hosted a screening last evening with a Q & A panel and a cocktail reception after. Matt Weiner and all of the cast attended. Sal Romano and the 2 other young guys (can't think of their names) sat in the audience but the major/main characters were on stage for the Q & A. Now here's where it gets interesting. EXCEPT for Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks everyone was exceptionally tiny in varied ways. John Slattery is SHORT, I mean 5'4" short, Vincent (pete campbell) was very THIN, so much so he looked elfin. He was wearing a light beige suit, with a pair of boots (odd choice). The boots caused his rear pant legs to get tangled up in them and it looked like hell to say the least. He had 2-day beard growth with makeup over it...not a good combo. I don't have much to say about Elizabeth Moss except she too was very scrawny and plain looking...not that different from her character. January Jones was also VERY skinny but that's the norm for young Hollywood girls today. She's perfect as Don's Breck-Girl wife, but when not in character I'm not impressed with her looks. She also came off a little whiney while on the Q & A panel. As my friend said she didn't come off as being that bright. Christina Hendricks was very pretty, a real red head with a creamy complexion, who looks MUCH YOUNGER in person. She had on a nice business suit but it was obvious she was wearing the same undergarmets they make her wear on the show as she looked all trussed up. Jon Hamm was in a suit and was just as gorgeous in person. However, he's NOT 6'2" as reported. He might be 6 Ft but my friend thinks he was more like 5'11". The cast gets the new scripts today (tuesday)and will start shooting in May for an August premiere. Unfortunately Matt Weiner wouldn't say what year it will be when the new season starts.

April Movie Mad-ness Discussion

Here we go again, Maddicts!
As promised, I am posting the thread for our sixth Movie Mad-ness discussion! (The third season, beginning sometome in July, will be here before we know it! Just think, we started these discussions to bridge the time, and it's so much closer now!)
This month our discussion will be the movies "Exodus" and "Gentleman's Agreement." The movie star discussed will be the actress, Dorothy Dandridge. This is the place to share your thoughts about this trio and explain why (in your opinion) Weiner mentioned or placed them in the series.
Were they an important part of the characters' conversations, or just inserted in the series to mark time? Were you alive at the time these movies were released? Feel free to share where were you at the time you first saw the movies and your reaction to them. Oh yes, continue to share related tidbits about the real-life antics of the stars in these movies...they are a welcome addition to the discussion!
Exodus, the book (Don was reading in the series) was written by Leon Uris and released in 1958. Was it as much of a sensation as the film directed by Otto Preminger starring Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint in 1960? Gentleman's Agreement (released in 1948) won 3 Oscars and garnered nominations for almost the entire cast. Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire, Celeste Holm and John Garfield were expertly directed by Elia Kazan in this hard look at anti-Semitism in America. Dorothy Dandridge (a last minute substitution to this discussion) is worthy of discussion due to her connection to Otto Preminger and tragic life parallel to last month's movie star, Marilyn Monroe. The Draper's housekeeper, Carla, and Paul's girlfriend Sheila would be talking about her...I hope we share many new things about her life and talents.
I look forward to another lively discussion and will post my comments right along with you. (...Just a reminder, I am not an AMC moderator, just a fan like yourself!)

Season 1, Episode 1, Scene 1

I was just re-watching "For Those Who Think Young". After the camera pans passed Don's head it goes to the napkin he is writing on and there is something red on the napkin. What is it? A women's lipstick? Was a woman with him before the scene started? Does an Old Fashioned have cherries? Is it foreshadowing events to come? Any ideas?

AMC slacking off?

I read on a link through IMDB that season three starts filming on May 4. That is only two weeks away! But there is no mention of that here on the official website. I remember lurking around here this time last year and there seemed to be way more information about the second season than there is for the third.

Mad Men Season 3

When will season 3 of Mad Men Start

A Mad Moment on 30 Rock

I can't believe this hasn't come up in the forum yet. On this week's 30 Rock, the character of Kenneth was poisoned with strawberries. Believing that he was dying from an allergic reaction, with his last breath he revealed his true name: Dick Whitman!

I started watching 30 Rock because of Jon Hamm's guest appearance and immediately loved it. While it could never replace my Mad Men, it does help during the long, cold stretch between season 2 and 3.

When does the new season start?

When does the new season start? I don't want to miss it!

Sal and Kitty (Bryan Batt and Sarah Drew)

"I wonder if it is a daunting endeavor for Bryan to be one of the only representative faces in entertainment, right now, of what a married, closeted gay man would have experienced in the 1960s?"

Dry Manhattan posed this question on the comment line for the Sarah Drew interview. I thought it very thought provoking. I wonder if any of our gay or lesbian Maddicts would care to share their thoughts and/or experiences about life as a gay individual during the Mad Men time period of the late '50s and early '60s. I think we have come a long way in recognizing the rights of gays and lesbians since that time, although I also realize there is still a long road ahead. I am not gay, however, so perhaps those Maddicts who are would prefer I not talk about that of which I know not (how's that for a convoluted sentence?).

Sal's story is such an intriguing part of the whole Mad Men drama that I believe any insights as to what his character would have been going through during that time period would be quite interesting. I hope we get to see more of Sal and Kitty during Season 3.

Mad Men in the UK

Why does none of the cast members or Matthew Weiner come over to Britain to promote Mad

Mad Men Book and Merchandise

Does anybody know if there is any plans to release a book of mad Men or anyother merchanside from the show

From "Steps" by Frank O'Hara

"oh god it's wonderful
to get out of bed
and drink too much coffee
and smoke too many cigarettes
and love you so much"

This is from a poem by Frank O'Hara (of "Meditations In An Emergency" fame) about New York City. It seems to fit our Mad Men, doesn't it, just a little bit?

Season 3 info???

Anybody know anything? Have been a fan of this show since day one and haven't heard when or if season three will begin.

help, it's driving me crazy

I can't get the Mad Men theme out of my head. I tried listening to other music, didn't work.

The Complete Manhattan Tower

Gordan Jenkin's Tone-Poem to NYC, originally issued in 1948 and expanded/updated in 1956. I often imagine that a young Don Draper listen to this and dreamed of moving to The Big Apple.

Does anyone know why MADMEN isn't available ON DEMAND anymore?? It was last season, so I never had to worry about missing an episode. Also, I hear when BREAKING BAD comes on and previews to it, but never about MADMEN, which comes on after it, last year it was always advertised on amc

Casting

Has anyone watched the new NBC series "Southland"? If so, keep your eye out for Patrick Fischler (Jimmy Barrett). He plays a character called Kenny No-Gun.

How do I (A businessman) develop Don Draper charisma?

How do I (A businessman) develop Don Draper charisma? Can I read, watch or listen to something to help me learn Don's style of handling people

Why did Kinsey's girlfriend drop him in Alabama?

Kinsey accompanies his African-American girlfriend on a rugged trip down to Alabama with a busload of freedom-fighters.

Later we learn, en passant, that she dropped him while they were down there.

No explanation is given, and the subject just drops.

Now why do you suppose his GF dropped him? Was it just because he chattered the whole way down there, trying to show off his "liberal" cred?

MM's stripper looks nothing like today's "pole dancers". Why?

Now here's a juicy question. In Episode One when the boys all go down to The Slipper Club for Crane's engagement festivities, we see part of the onstage strip show that they observe.

The lady onstage is very much an example of the "Gypsy Rose Lee" tradition of strippers, ie., she is over-30, indeed WELL over 30; she is no twig or waif, looks like she's had a litter of kids already, and wears no suntan. In short (and this is no insult), she looks like somebody's grandma.

Similarly, at the swimsuit fashion show Don attends at the country club in California, the girls on show-- even though they are quite young--- have curvaceous layers of adipose tissue in strategic places that would never fly at a runway show today.

Anyone care to explain why today's pole dancers and models are expected to be "hardbodies" with the barest minimum of fat?

The quick answer is, of course, Twiggy came along and changed all that. Is there more to it?

Rants, Freudian and feminist theory welcome...

I wonder if Betty will inherit?

Betty apparently comes from a rather wealthy , or at least well-off , family. Now that her dad married Gloria and has kind of lost his mind, do you think Gloria will scoop it all up? If Betty does inherit, will she then have the means to leave Don?

So there IS a Marjorie!

I've watched all of Season One And Two, and have truly loved the names some of the characters have, as they are often names that were popular in the 50's and 60's but which one doesn't hear so much anymore.

Peggy, Lois, Betty, Bobbie, and so forth.

I've been thinking: Hmm, the only quintessential 50's name they've left out is.... Marjorie. How many little girls named Marjorie will you find in a preschool nowadays? Not many, I'd wager.

But you know, I am wrong: I just rewatched Episode One tonight. Peggy's roommate in Brooklyn is named Marjorie!!!

Who performs the great version of "Caravan" in Episode One?

You music aficionados:

Do you know who performs the fantastic version of Duke Ellington's song "Caravan" near the end of Episode One? It sounds like a brand-new recording... but the arrangement is pure 1960... a playful, jazzy, Esquivel type of arrangement...

Thanks, ras

SAG/Producers have tentative deal!

The Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said Friday that they've reached a tentative agreement on a deal covering TV programs and movies. Details of the deal with not be disclosed, the two sides said, before the Screen Actors Guild's board of directors reviews the agreement on Sunday.

Whew! Now for the details and the vote.

Which Madmen character are you?

This is a Facebook-style question, to be sure, but what "Mad Man" character do you most identify with? I'll start with the obvious--Lois Sadler. She's clueless and naive, but really endearing at the same time. You just know she'll forever be on the switchboard, somewhere or another.

OT: Familiar with this very old advertising dictum?

MAD MEN brings to mind an old advertiser's dictum I remember hearing long ago:

"No truly great ad campaign has existed which does not feature at least one of three images: a comely young woman, preferably thinly-clad; an adorable baby or toddler; or a genial, animated animal mascot."

Apparently this rule was true for admen in 1850 and is no less so today.

Do you reckon it's true? Disagree?

SC don't support Kennedy.... Why not?

Hey Maddicts,

Help me understand a particular plot-point in the unfolding of the MM saga: The whole floor at SC, unanimously it seems, do not support Kennedy as a presidentrial candidate. Rather, they are all rooting for Nixon.

Why would a NYC agency which prided itself on "thinking young" go with a more reactonary and somber-seeming candidate?

Thanks, ras

Season 3

Anyone know when Season 3 is slated to start? thanks

White French Provincal!!!!

Just watched the "Production" video...and sure enough:. The Draper's living room is now sporting a white and (not quite turqoise) french bergere! My only disappointment is the oriental embella stand next to it with a bouquet of silk flowers!

Hopefully the rest of the French Provincal is upstairs in that bedroom...

Peggy and Joan dopplegangers?

I watched "The New Girl" for the second time this weekend and noticed a couple interesting things in the flashback scenes of Peggy in the hospital and thought I'd mention them. In the first flashback with the doctor, there is a woman dressed in street clothes lying on the bed next to Peggy. Her back is to the camera so we don't see her face. Just as the doctor gets up to leave, she stands up, walks across the room, goes to the window, and stands looking out. She has a ponytail just like Peggy. Then, in the next flashback with Don, it appears that there is no bed next to Peggy. But now there is a figure lying in the bed in the corner, being attended to by a nurse. The figure in the bed looks corpse-like, but I swear, she has bright red hair!

Did anyone else notice these, and if so, what if anything do they mean? And to which "girl" does the title really refer? MM is FULL of misdirection.

Or am I just developing an MM obsession? Should I seek professional help?

Minimum of "profane" language on MM...?

I'm impressed with the barest minimum of profane language on MADMEN.

I think I've heard only about two "shits" in the entire series.... Bobbie Barrett utters a sotto-voce "bullshit". But that's it.

I'm wondering if this is a stylistic choice on the part of the writers--- making a point about how, when and where "nice" people swore in the early-60's...

...or whether MM is in compliance with a general AMC-TV restriction on language.

I'm not sure I've ever heard an F-bomb at all on AMC, even late at night, though there has been some brief full frontal nudity.

And while we're on the subject of language, do you think people swore differently in tge 60's? I certainly think so. Today, educated, nice people use the F-bomb routinely. It's thought to be hip, perhaps? Or funny?

My dad had a mouth on him in the 1960's.... he was from South Texas oil country.... but even he stopped short of some ogf the harsher words... I never heard him, for example, use the c*** word or f*** word in any context. But he sure was chock-full of "goddams", which I never hear on MM.

Funnily enough, today at age 66, he uses the occasional F-bomb, haha. He's gotten with the picture.

No crew-cuts/flat-tops seen on MM?

In the scene in which Campbell presents his "Aerospace" talk in Los Angeles, the camera pans over a huge swath of men.

I couldn't help but notice that none of the men is wearing a crewcut or a flat-top haircut.

I grew up in Texas in the Sixties... maybe the flat-top was more of a "Southern thing"? Or perhaps the flat-top was a little bit déclassé a look for the échelon of men seen at this convention?

I recall, in Texas, in the Sixties, everyone was so ga-ga about having NASA in their backyard (Houston), and many civilian men aped the John Glenn flat-top.

And, of course, Texas was a conservative state with lots of "hawkish" feeling on Viet Nam, so a quasi-miltary look was fasionable for plenty of men and boys of all ages... at least until the time of the Tet Offensive... when LBJ himself started growing his hair... to an astionishingly long collar-length.

Song played at Crane's "baby shower" ?

Can anyone identify the upbeat pop song (swing beat, female vocals) played in the background during Crane's office "baby shower"? It doesn't ring a bell...

Booze shuts up poor little Sally Draper?

Amj I the only one who noticed that funny (?) little moment in which little Sally Draper is being babysat at the Office, but then starts to annoy the adults with her provocative observations...

In the nxt scene, she is dead asleep on the office sofa, Joan beaming over her protectively. Don picks the sleeping child up... and from the folds of the baby girl's skirt, to the carpet, falls an empty SC tumbler.

I think we're supposed to get the picture that Joan basically shut the little girl up by dosing her with some whiskey... probably disguised as COCA-COLA.

Does this act seem venal by today's standards? Abusive?

I had to laugh here, because my parents (basically the Drapers personified) used to shut me up the same way in the 1960's.

WAY off topic-but help!

...and did I mention that I work in an ER?
Tonight at work we played a little game...someone would name a celebrity/writer/personality of the recent past and we would name their 2009 counterpart.

Anyway-things were going along just fine but we were stumped For 3:

Gore Vidal
George Plimpton, Jr
Bennet Cerf

Does this type of "educated raconteur" exist anymore?Someone stated that maybe these types threatened the average joe...but, I myself used to love it when Vidal appeared on the Tonight Show.

I know you folks are pretty smart and I know that this is way far off any previous topic...But please think about it...I am working tomorrow evening and want to return with some winners! Thanks

Season 3...?

When is it scheduled to start?

Peggy is a serial mom of two kids and she has mental problems.

I am trying to determine if Peggy has some mental issues which involves two kids. In the scene with Peggy returning the vacuum cleaner there's Peggy who is saying her goodbyes to her mother and her sister. The sister asks her to say goodbye to the kids and Peggy opens a bedroom door to say her goodbyes.

Did anyone else notice the number of kids in the bedroom? There were three kids in the room. I noticed a toddler who might be around 3yrs. old in a bed. The room also included two cribs in the room with a baby in each one. The oldest one says, "Goodbye Aunt Peggy".

I believe the oldest kid is Peggy's first born and so is one of the two in the crib. I recall Peggy's sister being pregnent at the same time Peggy was, so that explains who the other baby is. The sister is raising all three kids as her own.

There was another episode in which Peggy is in a hospital (maybe a mental hospital) and Don Draper is at her bedside telling her she has to get herself out of there. I think this may have been after one of the kids was born.

Did anyone else catch these scenes and come to the same conclusion, Peggy is a serial mother who seems to be denying it to herself?

Season 2, Episode 1 song question

I have been trying to determine the title and singer of a song in the background of a scene in Season 2, Episode 1. It's the scene with Pete and Trudy where she's opening the box of chocolates and they're discussing a woman's pregnancy. It sounds like it might be entitled "Time Will Tell", but I've found no song by that title that has this tune. I found a link on YouTube. The song starts about 6 minutes into this 9-minute clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdKa5HpVFw8&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fvideo.google.com%2Fvideosearch%3Fq%3D%2522Mad%2BMen%2522%2B%2522Season%2B2%2522%26hl%3Den%26emb%3D0%26aq%3Df&feature=player_embedded

What happened to Real Classics.

My first love of Classic TV seem to be lost forever, leaving behind movies of actors and producers who are Great at what the do but need another channel to be shown on. I missed the real classics who show a time and place where life was much simplier and even and the clothes was more modest. I'm not saying that Catwoman and Batman Return isn't Great but American Movie Classic should be reserved for those movies which are original and not elaborated on. I love the old Doris Day and Mickey Rooney pictures. I stay up late at night just to catch a glimsp of the old movies and musicals. Don't let America forget their legacy. These people was God's of the movie screen and should not be pushed into the closets because of things we may hate admitting to such as Racism. How are our young people going to know what we are fighting for if they don't have a clue to how it really was. So embrassed the old slave pictures and the movies that only white's was lead in. This way we can assure that we will never go there again.

Atlas Shrugged finally coming to the big screen

it appears the classic novel will final be made into a movie. the screen play is being written by randall wallace(the man who wrote braveheart), he is also set to direct as well.it is scheduled to begin shooting in 2010 & be released in '11. many of hollywoods leading ladies are rumored to be in line to play dagny taggart, the list includes angelina jolie, julia roberts, anne hathaway & charlize theron. who do you think would would do the best job playing taggart? my choice would be jolie.

Jon Hamm- ginsberg movie

from imdb.com, the movie is called howl & will debut in 2010- it has quite a good cast. besides JH and james franco (as ginsberg) alan alda, jeff daniels, mary louise parker, treat williams, david strathairn, eric roberts & paul rudd are also in it.

Season 3

Will start on Sunday; July 27th at 10PM.
Got it?

trembling on the brink

What's fantastic about Mad Men just now is how it shows women on the brink of the revolution that was about to sweep through society. Betty Friedan's pen would have been scribbling away at the time A Night To Remember is set. The Feminine Mystique was published in 1963. Betty Draper, Joan Holloway and Peggy Olsen are ripe for her words, not to mention little Sal Draper. The acting of all three were fabulous, just superb. Interesting too that most of the products that Mad Men do campaigns for are targetted at women - even Heineken beer and Rightguard deoderant - they need the women to stay as sweet as they are for the whole kit and caboodle to work. What a beaut touch to have Joan soothing her dug into shoulder from the pressure of her bra strap. Pretty soon a lot of those contraptions would be going up (at least symbolically) in smoke.
The more I think of it, the more that last ep of Mad Men I just watched 'A Night to Remember', was a corruscating critique of Patriarchy. The women have to stay 'loveable' to their masters, whether it be their husbands, their senior work colleagues or God (all male). Father Gill's questioning whether Peggy thinks God can love her is so loaded with this and his song, all about Judgement absolutely sums this up. "When He calls my name". This series isn't just about who has hots for who, that's the small stuff. As a work of fiction it does more for the justification of feminism than a hundred women's studies papers or a basket of 'Female Eunuchs'. Well done that oh so intelligent, psycho-sociologically astute writing team. Why can't U.K. drama be as sharp and sophisticated as this? It used to be. You guys and gals rock!

Survey II: Where do you watch?

I am in Massachusetts

Survey: What do you watch, how do you watch, and why??

Due to simple logistics at the moment, and also the love of control, I now watch just about all TV shows on the internet ....what about everyone else?

What do you watch on TV versus the internet, and why???

Does anyone watch live broadcasts anymore, or is everyone DVR'ing everything?

MAD MEN SEASON ##

Any idea when the third season of Mad Men will begin?

Excedrin Commercial

Is that Elizabeth Moss (Peggy) in the Excedrin commercial?

Don cheap?

Why do so many people think Don is cheap? The house, the horse , the wardrobe and the choice of restaurants?

I think if anything he is a spender...I doubt very much the Drapers have much in the bank.
