Talk is a public forum where you can ask questions and share your commentary with fellow Mad Men fans.
WHAT KEEPS YOU CHECKING IN ON THE FORUM??
Is it a certain person, the topics, artistic stimulation, self expression, frustration, nothing to do, loneliness, reaching out, hatred, love, loyalty to Mad Men, the characters, their stories, to be listened to by the powers that be or by friends made on the board , to be accepted....???? What?

Nice people like you Nora. Meant to tell you you have a cool last name. And I enjoy the "banter" back and forth. Seeing my name in lights. They like me they really really really like me. Lol
Yes, Nora...ditto what Chelsea said...I happen to like both of you...and jamm....and z.....and silverminx...and ALL us off-topic-postin'-CRS-disease-afflicted downtroddens.
The Boring Banterers Club better circle the wagons...if you get my drift...lol????
This is the only forum I regularly check on. I really enjoy Mad Men, and this forum allows me to keep up with news of the show and to connect with other fans of this truly remarkable drama. I have read some wonderfully informative comments, some hilarious comments, and some downright nasty and mean comments, and I keep coming back for more. There are some posters whose comments I will read immediately and some I ignore, just as I am sure others probably do with my mine. There are many talented, insightful people who post on this forum, Nora, including yourself. It is a little slow and sometimes boring while we wait for the next season to start, but I still check in daily 'cause you just never know what you'll find.
Any Maddicts who "ignore" or scroll past your posts, z, are missing some of the best, most interesting comments on the boards. I think that post about Sex and Calories was one of the funniest things I've ever read. I look forward to reading what you have to say always. You're a classy lady and you know what of you speak.
Hang in there, girls...
I should have added that it is also fun to be one of the "girls", as I have missed that certain kind of female camaraderie since I retired from the office. Sometimes it almost feels like we are having our own little coffee klatch on line, annoying as it must be to the male and/or more serious minded Maddicts among us. I love being a wife, mother, grandmother and sister, but sometimes, I just want to hang with the girls and be silly. Is that so wrong?
Yes Mz Z I couldn't agree more. I know you are from Illinois (from Rubudon thread remember?) That's why I must like you as I was orginally from a small town. Now if you lived in Florida we could definitely hang together. It's raining today so I am enjoying staying at home listening to an "Adele" CD right now and posting. Now I know I am going off topic but I saw a good movie the other day and I actually wondered if you had seen it. Called The Ladies in Lavender with Judi Dench.
Back on topic another reason I come back to this site is because no one at my office watches it now. So I enjoy the exchanges here.
Except my boss just told me she bought the DVD
She is 58 and can relate. Guess what she really likes it!
NO, z, it is utterly and unconditionally NOT wrong to want to "just hang with the girls"!
There once was a time not so long ago when we could come to our little "coffee klatch"----online though it may be----and be accepted, with loving open arms, secure in the knowledge that the chaff would be blown from the wheat with loving eyes and hearts. What a wonderful "bond" we all had...
I miss it terribly, don't you?
Oh, God, I hope Polar Bear isn't reading this as I am going off topic to respond to Chelsea. Yes, I did see "Ladies in Lavender." Very good movie, with Dame Maggie Smith, too. Both she and Dame Judi are favorites of mine. Great scenery, too, of the English coast. This movie had everything for me, including Star Gazey Pie. I am glad you enjoyed it also, Chelsea.
Did you ever see a movie entitled "Widow's Peak" with Mia Farrow, Joan Plowright, and Natasha Richardson? That was very good also. It takes place in a village back in the 1920s where most of the women are widows. Very good story, well acted, with a neat little twist at the end. Not so far off Mad Men territory, either, as it takes place in another time, and not everyone is who they claim to be.
Of course Ms. Z I should have known you would have seen that movie. Yes the scenery was gorgeous!! I believe it was filmed in Cornwall.
I have made a note about the movie you mentioned and I will report back when I've seen it.
Oops must get back on topic or the Czars will be mad. That's another reason I like checking in on this forum is the things you learn.
I hope others will join in and not be afraid to share thoughts .... :-)
"the Czars"....Chelsea, you are a gem.
Hee hee
Chelsea...I love Adele!
Don't you think she sounds some like Dusty Springfield?
(I know there are about nine years between our ages, so if you don't remember her, she sang "Ode to Billy Joe" and "Wishin' and Hopin'", "Son of a Preacher Man" and "I Only Want To Be With You" to name a few) this was during the early to mid '60's as I recall.
Their voices have that same bluesy, soulful, earthy sound.
What song of her's (Adele's) is your favorite?
oops..forgot to put the Off Topic Warning at the top...........here goes...........
OFF TOPIC--------OFF TOPIC--------OFF TOPIC-------------OFF TOPIC
Hi everyone - I get hooked on certain threads and come back often to check, especially when we are predicting future scenarios and the creative geniuses on this forum go to work! I miss this show so much and coming here helps me with my maddiction.
.....I just want to see which avatar SCfan is going to use next.
Yeah, Dry...new month...new pic...next month is set for Golda Maier...
I got a million of 'em..
Meir....
.....I'm going to change mine to Gertrude Stein.
Oh no...don't get rid of the little martini glass...it's so original and cute...can't you find a pic of Gertrude Stein having a martini????
I usually post at work because I need to interact with some intelligent people for a change. My doofus - tolerance level is dangerously low these days.
flower...you mean your work doofuses are worse than all these?
oops... I just re-read that...before anybody gets all worked up...I speak only for myself...doofus-wise, that is....
I work at home and live alone, so I come on this forum to unwind after a long stint at my computer. I've been coming here since Season One and I know I'll always find threads worth reading, learn something, and/or get a few smiles or laughs.
I try to check in at least once a week now, but during the season, I come 3 or 4 times a week. Sometimes I lurk and don't post. I'm not as clever as some of you folks.
SCfan I like the Adele song where she says "Should I Stay". Can't remember the name though.
DryM yes I like the martini glass too. I also learn things. I didn't know what a lurker was and now I sure know what being flamed means.
Chopin47 don't worry about not being clever to keep you from posting. There are a few "poster snobs" around but most of us aren't. I hope I don't give anyone that impression.
Me, too,Chelsea...if I've ever given anyone that impression, I apologize a thousand times over.
God, once you've been flamed (I've had the experience more than once, sorry to say) you turn extra cautious about every word you type. I miss how free and easy things used to be on here.
oh waaaahh, I guess.....
oh, Chelsea...I think maybe Chopin47 might be afraid of posting things that are not original material or are off-topic...if I wasn't already enmeshed in all the chair throwing (chicken throwing??? ha) I'd just be lurking, too.
it's really a sad situation.
I post less than I used to, never did a lot, not only because I've been flamed, but because ever since Mad Men started winning awards and new people came to the board, the environment has changed. I suppose that's inevitable. But, I do wish we had the kind of inviting, comfortable forum we had a year and more ago.
There are a few people who post here who do seem to have the attitude that they should run the place and pass judgment on other people's opinions. This is still better than any other TV show's message board, but I don't have the same enthusiasm I had before.
Last night I read a long thread about posting off topic - I couldn't believe people were actually concerned about others posting "off topic." This board is full of Baby Boomers because that show is about our era, so if certain scenes or episodes bring up memories that people want to share, I can't understand why anyone would be concerned or offended by that. You can scroll through anything you don't want to read. I really think Polar Bear and 485Madison are the same person, but if they aren't, that's frightening that there are 2 people like that in this world. And the guy who uses PhD in his username - what's that all about? This is a TV message board, we don't need credentials here. Who is he trying to impress?
Sorry, that was off topic!
SCFan, what is the chair throwing reference about?
SCFan: "flower...you mean your work doofuses are worse than all these?"
I'm sure you meant the doofuses who work at Sterling Cooper, right? ; )
And yes, I work in an educational setting and these are the worst doofuses ever. I'll match my doofuses to any doofuses anywhere. You remember the Mozart zipper thing - that would be considered genius here.
.....Tsk! It's Doofi!!
(Perhaps zerelda can do something with that - a limerick maybe?)
I absolutely adore your post, Chopin47...and I agree with you wholeheartedly about the change in atmosphere around here. I remember you back when we all started posting around the end of the first season...it was definitely "inviting and comfortable", wasn't it? My heart aches about the seemingly irrepairable damage done to our beloved forum. I hope I haven't caused any of it, and if I have, I apologize from the bottom of my heart ....
what the chair throwing thing was about was when I allowed myself, against my better judgement, to be lured into a sparring match with Polar Bear (and later with 485 Madison) which degenerated quickly into a mud slinging contest. I allowed my "buttons to be pushed" and I regret it deeply.
In all honesty, I am concerned about Polar Bear in that I have a feeling his avatar/name must have to do with a mental condition...have you ever heard of Bipolar Disorder (what used to be called schizophrenia) the way one day he will be playful and soooooo funny and then turn mean spirited and confrontational (classic symptoms). That's not normal and I worry he's off his meds...but....that is the only diagnosis Dr. Scfan will ever venture to make and yes, I am sure that comment will ruffle his fur...so be it.
And as for 485Madison...control freak, pure and simple. He has one train of thought and it runs one way and everybody else better like it.
ho hum
Thanks for your post, though....made me feel less like the Lone Ranger.
lol
SCFan, yes, I had the same thought about Polar Bear and I work in education and healthcare, so I am VERY familiar with bipolar disorder. You're very astute and perceptive, I think.
See you on future threads!
Um, let's not get carried away here. If judgments are to be made on mental stability based solely on the posts of this forum, I think there are a whole lot of us that would be sent to the couch. Let's not go down that road, shall we? Let's just agree to disagree. The air is cleaner on the high road, and the view is better, too.
I was stating my opinion in my previous post. I should not have used the word "diagnosis"... not a dr.... not medically qualified...just stated my opinion....which has not changed.
The fact that chopin47 "had the same thought", and stated she is "familiar" with that particular situation, must mean something....
I liked your earlier post ("note to self:"...) on a different thread, z, I do need to join you in resolving not to read or respond anymore to PB's posts...or to anyone who responds to his posts. I think that is in the best interest of all serious, well-meaning posters on this forum. Thanks for the heads up.
It will be hard, but I will give it my very best shot.
wooo boy...that didn't last very long----"Fatal Attraction" no less...
Zerelda, It's obvious from the tone of PB's posts that he is not stable. I agree that his posts should not be responded to, but that suggestion was made quite a while back, yet he still manages to get a rise out of many people who do respond to him, including some who swore a few months ago they would never respond to him.
I myself have been flamed and even called "a bag of doggy doo-doo" on this board for stating facts, not opinions, and no one suggested that poster take the high road. I've never posted anything as hostile as PB or the person who attacked me. So, if I want to share an informed opinion, not a judgment, with another poster, I am sure you'll agree I'm entitled to that.
I personally am offended at the overtly sexual nature of a couple of posters on this board and I steer clear of them because I know I'll be annoyed and/or offended by their posts. I would never presume to try to censor their remarks.
Well, Chopin47, while I am not quite to the point of declaring PB a total whackadoo, I do agree that yes, you are entitled to your opinion. I also believe that any poster who would hurl a "bag of doggy doo-doo" epithet wouldn't recognize the high road if you gave them a map and pointed to the on ramp. I waste no time in reading or responding to their posts. I am, however, always interested in reading your posts.
We still have not heard from 57Chevy, I notice. I wish she would check in.
Yes, very troubling, z...Dry did some research and some phone calls a while back...she posted what she found caused her "to stop looking"...so....don't know what we can do on our end of the deal until we hopefully see her posts start back.
hope hope.....
SCfan what is the mystery surrounding your friend 57? And what did Dry discover to make her "stop Looking"? Hmmm inquiring minds want to know.
Dry knows more than me since she did some research and made some calls as she posted about on different threads....I think she couldn't post her findings because of privacy, which I totally agree with her thinking there. I actually was surprised she was able to find out anything at all.
There's just no way to know just why 57 stopped posting with no way to contact her directly...Dry can you tell us anything that won't cause security problems?
.....No.....
Do you have the phone number of the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing...I could call it and ask if they still have all the students enrolled that were in the most recent class....or did you already do that?
.....I'm on it.....
I called the # in our phone book and it was a recording....good luck.
So are you guys worried. I mean a lot of people stop posting. We haven't heard from Silverminx in ages. I think her husband is ill and that takes up a lot of her time.
I definitely don't want you to post anything that can be used by some jerk to be able to tap into any of your private info., Dry, and I know you know I mean that...but, could you maybe just let us know if she's still with us? or whatever you've discovered, but only if it's safe and possible to do so.
I feel awful because I'm here in her same state, but I don't know enough about computers, etc. to be able to investigate like you have, esp. not knowing her name. It is truly worrisome, since, I know you remember, too, her mentioning in one of her earliest posts that she had had a heart attack before.
I feel like it's better that we know (what little there is to know) rather than keep wondering. jmho.
Chelsea, that's probably the deal with silverminx...and that's the double edged sword with this forum...we have become friends and we do worry about each other.
.....All I can tell you is I don't know the answers to any of those questions. I have a couple more tricks up my sleeve before I'm out of rabbits. I'll keep you posted.
Aww shoot! I am so sorry I caused concerned. I had midterms and could not come here. Spring break I has a cath and found that I had more blockage and had to withdraw from school one month before finals. ( making a face)
I happened to have a lung infection and was on a quarentine on meds for two weeks so my bypass could be done.
There is really nothing private about me unless someone is the kind of creature we all fear.
Dry, that letter meant so very much to me and my husband. It gave me encouragement to be strong at a time that I actulaay had a feeling of doom. I can never thank you enough.
I am ashamed to say that I did not reply because I was concerned that I would invade your privacy. My husband insisted because the surgery was the next day. I mentioned to him I do not kinow who everyone really is and the address made me feel a bit scared I was bothering someone far more important than I am. This may sound silly to some. I hate being a bother.
Please forgive me for the error. And thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the concern.
If someone could be so kind, I will post my email and phone number at an appropiate place.
Forgive me for any worry I caused. I may have had heart surgery, but that is so common I can not complain.
All of you are great and impact strangers lives that you may never realize. Positive impact.
This may sound corny, but I love you all.
