X rated commercials

Usually I don't mind the commercials but some of the commercials are inappropriate and offensive for public television. I have always enjoyed AMC and hope these male enhancement commercials die a painful death soon.

.....Viva Las Vegas is one of my favorite musical movies, and I will never feel the same about it again.

Oh, I am so with you on this subject! I loathe those male enhancement commercials. Any physical problem in the world can be discussed with a doctor. There is no need to pollute the airways with these ads. I have always felt the same about ads for feminine hygiene products, so please don't think this is a case of what is good for the goose isn't good for the gander. I would love to see a return to the airwaves of personal dignity, modesty and restraint, not only with ads, but the programming as well. If it is material for adults, then act like adults and show some creativity, sensitivity, and respect. Allow us to use our imaginations along with our eyes and ears.

user-pic

You all are so right.

Also, how the heck do those two in the bathtubs out in the middle of nowhere get hot water?
Are they sitting there in cold rainwater...how UN-sexy!

As for "Viva Viagra"...Elvis has got to be spinning in his grave.

I was recently enjoying some wonderful family time watching a movie with my teen sons, my pre-teen sons and my pre-teen daughter, and I was sickened, embarrassed and angered by all the male enhancement commercials that played. These commercials, most of which leave nothing to the imagination, have gotten way out of hand. Some are downright disgusting!! It's a shame that we can choose which programs we watch but have no say in what commercials are forced on us. I don't think I should have to explain "erectile dysfunction" to my 12-year-old daughter, or to my sons for that matter. I think what has happened to television is appalling and it seems to only be getting worse and worse ...

I wonder how many people, before purchasing these drugs (or trying it out for a week free) without the advice of a physician, have done any research about the potential physically and emotionally painful side effects?!? And what about drug interactions?!?

user-pic

Eeeeeeeesh..........that "Viva Viagra" TV commercial grated on my nerves so much all I wanted was a....stiff..drink!

I understand the founder of one of these male enhancement companies was convicted of fraud and sentenced to 25 years in prison. His attorney argued that the sentense was....too stiff.

You know, all a guy has to do is move to Canada....they use the metric system there.....7 inches equals 17.75cm.

(the above are borrowed, but couldn't resist putting in my 17.75cm's worth.)

P.S. ....Minxy feels bad, no one noticed my little poem on bill's "Next Mad Men?" thread....../-(

And, all kidding aside.......I detest all these ads.....the problem is, though, we all remember them and that's just what they want.....what's the old saw - say what you want about me....as long as you remember my name....!

user-pic

Well thank goodness, you all feel the same way I do! I thought to myself every time I saw one of those commercials, Come On! They are on rather frequently too. I thought to myself, has this what the world has come too? Sex, Sex, Sex, and who can't function properly. The thing that gets me is they are older people. People you would think had some type of respect for themselves and their personal life. The side effects alone are enough to kill you, just for a romantic evening, PLEASE!
They also have this commercial for women from Trojan with some little object two young ladies are talking about. It goes on your finger and then this older woman says "I ordered mine on line."
I truly agree with you all it is very bad taste and even worse when you're watching television with your family. You know SCfan, I think about Elvis and Ann-Margaret when I hear that " Viva" Whatever.

user-pic

Hey, minxy---I just read your poem (so sorry we didn't see it yet) ; - }

It was clever and cute!

user-pic

I know this is on the wrong thread (should be on "What makes someone sexy..") but, as for Elvis...he was the King in more than just his singing ability...soooooooooooooooo (catches breath) ooooooooooooooooo sexy. Yummmmeeeee.

It is said that Ann-Margaret and he almost married...but I guess he felt like he had to make an honest woman out of Priscilla since (in her words) they "had-done-everything-but" have actual sex while he "kept" her at Graceland waiting for her to get old enough!

Elvis and Ann-Margaret sure had the chemistry, I'll say that.

user-pic

Ditto to all the above. The dumbing down of America, through its gross commercials, continues.

user-pic

Thanks for reminding me SCfan, Sliverminx your poem was real good. It gave me a good chuckle!
Is that Sandra Dee SCfan? It sure looks like her.

default userpic

A special thank you to those of you who responded seriously. I especially liked the comments by BMXMOM65 about being able to choose the programs we watch but not the commercials and the comment by Sandy about the "dumbing down" of America. I wonder if O'Rielly would like to address this issue?

I just got an e-mail from Domino Magazine, it was a farewell. They said that with the economy the way it was they were having a hard time getting good advertising money and could no longer keep it running. Ad's about these kind of X-rated products are scraping the bottom of the barrel. With all the accolades for MM let's hope we don't have to sit through these kind of ads when Season 3 starts in summer. Even Peggy had the good sense to do Relax-a-sizor ads on radio.

default userpic

I'm so glad to read the comments here about those disgusting and dangerous ads. Add to them all the pharmaceutical ads touting drugs and then explaining how much they will hurt or kill you! (Lawyers require that) At the root of this problem is the fact that up to 1997 ads like that were not allowed. They deregulated advertising after that and all the crap started to accumulate, polluting our airwaves. Also, the ads you see during one show will be repeated ad nauseum on most every show, on every channel! You cannot escape them. I feel for the mother that had to sit through that junk with her children.

DVR's and TIVO's are a boon to TV viewing. We can fast forward through the embarrassing stuff if we set shows up to be recorded first.

I have read about people complaining about this problem on differet talk forums. There is a petition one can participate in to rid the Super Bowl broadcast of the worst ads. A bit late to sign up now but I'll just bet that it succeeded in making the NFL remove the ads. We will see what happens this Sunday..

user-pic

Yes, pink, it's Sandra Dee. I've always used different pics of her (long story) or Colleen Corby.

Back to the thread's subject: Remember when it was a big deal when they finally let Playtex show their bras on actual women? I remember it was a big deal...usually they had to show them on those plastic torso deals. Times do change, and not always for the better.

I will never forget my mom letting a boy come to my house and watch "Brian's Song". I also will never forget seeing the first ads for fem. products that I had noticed. He might have felt my unease because he said,"I have a sister."

Do people in charge of ads do demographics to do ad placement? Maybe times are so hard that an ad is money. I hate the male enhancement ads, but if they make it possible for us to watch our shows, I suppose I will get over it.

I have to be honest, hubby and I have a blast with the "Smiling Bob" ads. The golf one many innuendos.

(Sorry about my spelling)

user-pic

On the season premiere of "Damages" they got one of the car companies to sponser a one hour show with no commercials. I'm all for the season 3 premiere of MM to be commercial free. No bathroom break, but hey I'll get over it. Wouldn't that be awesome!!!

user-pic

I kinda worry about the long-term effects (no pun intended!) on those "male enhancement" products---I mean---how much bigger can it actually make it?

I fear some of these fellows trying to "enhance" themselves are going to be sorry in the future when the "side effects" come to light and they end up with health problems that are permanent just because they thought they needed to "add on" to something that was probably perfectly adequate to begin with.

Oh well, I'm just a woman...what do I know?

user-pic

You know a lot SCfan! You're right about those health problems. I know a once very healthy, handsome man that was taking the "E" drug and ended up with a pacemaker. He doesn't even look the same he's aged at least 10 years. They say things can get pretty big, but when it's over it's over!
No more "Smiling Bob."

user-pic

Awww, sorry to hear about the man you spoke of. I figured the drugs were all aproved with a bow on the package.

I don't know about the rest of the ladies, but I like my man the way he is. I am sure he is average. Though this is crass we were aware of a guy in college that was well endowed. Some of my sisters asked to see it. They reported that they would have to be in love with that man to...you know what I mean.

Creepy for them to ask him to see, creepy for him to show it to him. Creepy of the girls like me to want all the details. Guess we are young for a reason.

So now I wonder, do we need ME products? I understand from a phychological point of view why ED could mean a lot to a mans emotional health. I do not understand why ME products are neccessary.

user-pic

I don't understand why ME products are necessary either, 57. I agree with you that most women like their men just the way they are naturally. I think some men THINK that women want more size down there but most women, I bet, just don't.

My husband is average, too, like you said yours is. And there have never been any problems about "size".

I think it is a classic case of advertising creating the need in men's minds and making them think they have to keep up with the other guys.

It's sold to men with the thought that women want it (the size increase) but we don't, do we?

What a shame that the men buying this junk have been sold a load of crap!

Well, that's one wife's opinion, anyway.

default userpic

I read that Viagra was actually just a by-product of a heart med they were trying to develop. The men in the experimental group said it did not help their hearts but there was this very unique side effect..and a mega industry was born. Too bad nobody asked older women what their take on it was.

You know, for the life of me, I just don't get the two bathtubs outdoors thing. It's just goofy. I could endure it if they just wouldn't play it over and over and over.

default userpic

Some very interesting statements! My husband's ex-wife complained that he was impotent for years.......amazing. He didn't have any trouble with me. Maybe these men better think out the reasons for their problems and leave all this "junk" alone.

user-pic

flower, yeah! I mentioned way up there about those damn bathtubs...stupid stupid stupid...three seconds of thought would make it obvious there isn't any way for the water (unless they are sitting in empty---or COLD-water-filled tubs--- Ick!) to be warm out in the middle of nowhere like that. So dumb...just going for the "visual" without any logic to it...

user-pic

That is so interesting Flowerpower that they would have a drug for the heart and the side effects are enhancement. Weird Science! I too agree about just being natural. That would be like having too different men in the house. Mr. Downer and Mr. Upper. Who wants to live like that?

user-pic

I think that hair grower stuff (can't recall it's name) came from a side effect of a drug, too...the participants in the study noticed their hair thickening. Seems like it may have been a heart drug, not sure.

I bet there are a lot of drugs that started that way.

user-pic

Just for the heck of it, I asked Google which agency made the Viva Viagra ad, and this was the response:

"Three years after the FDA yanked its "Wild Thing" ads off the air, Pfizer is again taking a playful approach with a Viagra TV spot riffing on the Elvis hit Viva Las Vegas. And this time, they got the agency's OK in advance. The 60-second spot by McCann Erickson features a band of forty- and fiftysomething-looking men at a roadhouse bar playing Viva Viagra.

As the narrator wraps up the risk info and the band delivers the chorus, one of them is shown roaring off on a motorcycle.

Pfizer said the buoyant spot tested better than ads focusing on the disease. “The goal of these ads is to take that upbeat tone and positive approach and motivate men to engage in dialogue with their physicians,” said Pfizer spokesman Francisco Gebauer. “It's extremely motivating.” Forty percent more, to be precise, than the more reserved spots Pfizer tested it against.

The ads drew immediate fire from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which has waged a campaign against Pfizer for what it alleges are efforts to promote the drug for recreational use—a charge the company denies.

Print ads complementing the spots will follow later in the year."

Egads!

user-pic

not "promote the drug for recreational use"??

Suuuuure they don"t!

Hell, with the $$$ drug companies make from "erectile disfunction" drugs, they'd 'promote them for recreational use' in 2 seconds--- and also claim they promoted weight loss, hair restoration, brain cell rejuvenation, stroke prevention, non-surgical face lifts.... and rock hard abs---IF they thought (even remotely) that they could get away with it!

user-pic

Since I posted last I informed our family sawbones that if he ever gave my husband a drug like that I would tell his wife I saw him smoking. He told me he has never smoked. I told him that was not the point. He laughed and told me to have a good day.

Hmmm, what what the sneaky schnauzer is up to.

default userpic

Otherwise a good channel, I, too, get sickened by the sexual ads, especially late-night on AMC.Some nights I've seen 3-4 commercials back-to-back.This is out-of-control and needs to stop.

Also, anyone interested in the illegitimate nature of this industry, check out the following:

I can maybe stand one of those commercials if the movie is good. Once they start though, they don't stop. I just turn the channel. The commercials are really revolting. They ought to check to see if Nielson families also turn away, because it's not just an artifact of Nielson. No one is checking MY viewing habits, I really do turn to another channel though.
