Roger Sterling

I really like Roger he has this certain kind of appeal, we know he's a romanticist. Though I think it goes beyond that. What does his character do for you?Do you like him? Is he some what distracted about his own agendas. What is it? Help me Madicts!

Oh Maddicts please forgive my spelling, I have thyroid eye disease and just refuse to go out like a bat! (Smile)

I think Roger is a hot mess. Must be the silver haired fox thing for me.
I predict he will go back to his wife and Joan will take him back too. Mrs. Sterling feels that Roger is a better person when he is with Joan.;-) Joan does not want marriage. She might need some security, but Roger can buy her that.

user-pic

Roger is my favorite character on Mad Men because he gets all the great lines - and the most beautiful women! ;o) His humor lightens up the show and women are always attracted to a man who can make them laugh. Cheers!

user-pic

BTW- I'm sure that having his name on the building is quite a chick magnet as well!.

user-pic

I think your right D&S, he does get all the good lines, I love the way he delivers them. That "bad" boy demeaner. He's a confused person, he has the young Jane and all her youthful ways because she makes him feel young. Mona can't make him feel that way. He was close to death and he has reavaluated his life he wants to feel young. I'm afraid Jane pregnant will totally burst that bubble. I'm glad Joan has moved on she realizes he was robbing her youth and she wanted more, let's hope she wakes up and finds some one better than the Doctor.

user-pic

Love Roger!

It is so true that he gets all the best lines and he is a silver fox and everything else that's been posted here already.

Roger is truly a "hot mess" as 57 Chevy said! LOL

I hope Jane has triplets and makes Roger realize he'd better stick with Mona (after the costly divorce from Jane!) and then Jane takes the babies away, only shows up just often enough to demand money from Roger and make his life miserable!

default userpic

I still like to hope that he will go back to his wife and Joan. I really have a wish that his wife has always known about Joan and she would prefer that Roger be in good hands if he must stray. I like to think that Joan will be taken care of because Mrs. Sterling knows Joan is not trying to take over her life. My version of Ying/Yang.

I think Jane will end up with one of the English guys. How many young women with high marriage goals would fall for a proper British accent?

user-pic

It is Yin-Yang.
Ying/Yang is a fusion Chinese/California restaurant in the City.

user-pic

Yeah, Mona should just put up with Joan doing her husband...at least if/when he croaks mid-f**k, Mona will only have a 50% chance (unless he starts doing others in addition to Joan) of it happening when he's doing her! Ick...but, then, again, for Roger it would be the perfect exit!

She sure stuck with him a lot of years, in spite of his cheating...she must really love him, even if she does want to punish him presently with the divorce and all...

user-pic

I didn't mean I wanted Roger to leave...please, God, if he does have another heart attack...don't let it be fatal...we MUST have Roger.

He's the 2nd most indispensible character on MM...next only to Don D, of course.

user-pic

You are so right, SCfan! ;o) Even though Peggy is considered the 2nd most important character next to Don - I have never felt that way. Roger and Don are a tag team with a solid yin/yang connection (i.e. Roger white hair with light hearted personality - Don dark hair with a dark mysterious personality). If they ever lost Roger, the show would never recover. NO ONE delivers lines like Roger!! Cheers! ;o)

user-pic

Sorry about saying yin/yang wrong. Am I being graded?* ;-)

Some fusion foods give me shivers.

We need Roger, we just don't need Jane . I'm not wishing her out of a job, but we saw so little of her.

* I figured you were teasing, plus I did learn that I have always said it wrong.

user-pic

In the end, Roger loves Roger. He wants what he wants and is not above using whatever he can to get it. The heart attack was the cold slap of reality hitting him upside the head but, after a half-hearted attempt at reform, he's reverted back to busily pretending he can carry on like he's 20-something and fully expects to go out of this world in the middle of someone, preferably young, pretty and fun. If cardiac arrest doesn't change him, Joan leaving him doesn't change him, and Mona divorcing him doesn't change him, I don't see where anything will. He's either going to drop in his tracks or die a very lonely sad little man. Too bad - he does get all the good lines.

user-pic

Auburn Annie, I think you're right about Roger loving Roger. After the first heart attack, I thought his eyes were opened and he realized how much his wife and daughter meant to him, but it didn't take long for his ennui to resurface. Then, that thing with the child Jane was just ridiculous. He was a lousy father to his daughter Margaret, but somehow he thinks he can be a great husband to a woman the same age.

He does deliver the some of the best lines in the series, though.

I still don't believe he'll end up with Jane - I think he'll beg Mona to take him back. She will because she loves him.

user-pic

I don't see Roger as being a begging type of guy. All he wanted from Mona was her not to make a scene at the office. He's even comfortable enough to depart with a certain amount of cash to get rid of her. Jane is young and some what an opportunist.
Remember when she had her blouse open and all the guys were hanging around to see her. Joan told her "I know what you're doing." Jane knew what she was doing she wanted Don, but he cut her right down to reality, that it wasn't gonna happen and to keep it professional. Next in line was Roger who always had something to say and was very distracted by her. We had no idea they were having a relationship because Roger was so busy trying to temp Don with her. Excellent cover I
would say. I don't think Jane will be going an where just yet. She's a good character with a lot of possibilities especially with Roger and many other tricks she has up her sleeve. If the rest of the cast is not careful they might all fall right into her hands.
Being the next Mrs. Roger Sterling that's a power move. While Mona may love Roger, we all know how bored men can get with the same woman. Ask Don, Pete, Harry, and even Sal. Most men are fond of themself especially at Sterling Cooper.

Roger is glib. Roger is funny. Roger is this...and Roger is that........ad nauseum. Roger leaves his old wife for a trophy wife, I could never 'like' him. No-way-Jose.....not in any way, shape or form, for any reason, at any time, in any way. Hope he trips over his own.....+*&^\#..and then does it again on the way back.

Now the ACTOR, he's another thing.....handsome, clever and kinda cute for a glib, funny guy. Like the way he sheds a tear....sniff.

user-pic

Manly yes and I like him too!!!

user-pic

Silver Fox for sure, that's our Rog!

user-pic

Roger is weak. He's never had to work for anything in his life. (Other than during his military service, which I would be interested in learning about. His father probably pulled some strings so he spent the whole war in some cushy job and never saw combat.) He definitely did some begging to Mona in the hospital after his heart attack. Of course, after his "recovery" he was back to his old self.

default userpic

Shallow, the poster boy for male chauvinism, inherited his position and never does a day's work, Roger has a certain type of surface charm but he is not smart. Not at all. He also does not learn from his mistakes. Roger is on a collision course with the Darwin Award.

default userpic

shallow yes but i disagree about his smarts flowrpowr... I think he's smart like a fox and there's not another fast talker around who can match him.. ":let's go fire somebody" has got to be one of my all time favorite lines and no one could have given the appropriately droll delivery like he did.I think he purposefully plays to his heritage, leaving the mistaken impression that he's a lightweight in order to keep close tabs on competitors without appearing overly interested.
It's my solid conviction that Frank, Sammy, Dean et al learned their cool from Roger.

user-pic

As to favorite Roger lines, I loved the one when Harry wanted to start a TV dept. and there was Roger sitting there before him at his desk with those huge, intimidating glasses, saying, with a pope-like gesture, "You are now head of TV."

Classic.

user-pic

Quote: "It's my solid conviction that Frank, Sammy, Dean et al learned their cool from Roger."

I'll drink to that, Nanz Benz! ;o) Roger and Dean had one thing in common...they never let their jobs beat them down. Cheers! ;o)

user-pic

Yeah Roger does remind me of Dean Martin in how laid back he is
Or what about when he says to Peggy something like, "you want an office? you can have your office". He's cooool, coool, cool like menthol smoke :-)

user-pic

And I would like to crown him: Roger Sterling Silver..... yeah baby.

user-pic

Chelsea, I knew there was a reason I liked you! ;o) Roger Sterling - the true meaning of cool and associating him with a menthol smoke...CLASSIC! Cheers ;o)

Everybody loves somebody sometime.......

Roger and his wife go out for thier 20th anniversary dinner. This is a special event as both Roger and his wife are 45 years old and go to thier favorite restaurant. He orders a bottle of champagne and when the waiter opens it, out pops a Genie. The Genie announces he knows it is thier anniversery and that each would receive one wish granted. The Genie says for the Wife to go first, she wishes for an all expense paid week on the blue water white sand carribean coast. Poof, they are on the Carribean Coast. The Genie turns to Roger and asks what is his wish, and Roger says I want to know what it feels like to sleep with a woman 25 years younger than me! Poof, the Genie made Roger 70 years old
