Revolutionary Road

Have you seen it? Did you read the R. Yates novel?

I read R Yates novel and loved it enough to salivate for the film version which I saw yesterday evening.

I've never started a thread. I logged on last nite hoping to comment on an existing "RR" thread. Found none. I did visit Greytone's established thread on MM movies but out of respect for Greytone and the focus of her link chose not to intrude with a Revolutionay Road question although I have thoughts on the train symbolism of Hitchcock and MM Season 2 which I may post later at that link. Thanks GT .

Back to the point, did anyone enjoy the book? Did anyone enjoy the film?

I loved the novel, hated the film and can certainly expand on that if anyone chooses to so here. As a Lit major in college I enjoyed the work of lesser known American authors such as Richard Yates and was surprised to find his novel was being made into film
I look forward to hearing your thoughts, especially if you're familiar with the novel AND have seen the film.

Hi, former WRG'er,
The novel "Revolutionary Road" has been mentioned on this forum on and off since Season One of Mad Men, and the film has been mentioned here and there since it opened in December, but neither has been discussed in any depth. Try the thread "Revolutionary Road Writeup" for a few comments about the film.

Most readers and critics loved the book but were disappointed with the film. The novel was top notch in every way. The film was good in that it followed the book pretty faithfully. But it lacked something essential (heart?) to make me care about this self-centered couple. My chief problem was with Kate Winslet, but what do I know? She is getting all kinds of praise for her role in the film.

I'm sure Greytone would be delighted to welcome you to the "January Film Mad-ness Discussion." What you might have to say about train symbolism in Hitchcock's films and parallels in Mad Men Season Two would be a welcome contribution.

.....Bear with me since this is not an educated question, but has anyone considered the unhappy state of the Draper marriage at the end of Season Two, as it relates to the end of Revolutionary Road?

I mean, what WILL Season Three bring? A baby, a related tragedy, or a latent and unmentionable similar "incident" as in the novel / movie..... complete with mysterious, but late-in-the-season flashbacks of Betty opting for an unsavory solution of similitude .....?

Sorry if this has been discussed before, and I haven't researched it thoroughly, but I wondered if Matt had the novel in mind when he wrote that outcome.

I enjoyed the movie, but liked the book better. What I especially liked in the movie was the music, like the band in the nightclub bopping to Woody Herman's "Lemon Drop" and the Ink Spots singing "The Gypsy" bringing back a lot of good memories for me.

This is off-topic sort of (it is about Leonardo DiCaprio, though).

I just saw him yesterday in 'Catch Me If You Can" and he has only gotten better since "Titanic" He was very good in it, but better in CMIYC, in my opinion. He is very sexy and also an excellent actor.

I have not seen RR and so can't comment on whether it's any good...but, I do think LD is evolving more and more into one of our better actors. He's like Dustin H. in that he seems to be improving with age.

I like Kate Winslet very much. I admire that she looks like a real woman and not one of these starved-out, too-skinny & unhealthy-looking actresses so prevalent these days.

Loved both the book and movie (Revolutionary Road). For more good reading, check out The Collected Stories of Richard Yates.
