Pffft!
There was a discussion on one of the movie threads a while back (can't remember which one) about the great Judy Holliday. This evening TCM is showing "Pffft!" starring Judy Holliday and Jack Lemmon. I am looking forward to seeing it again as it has been many years since I last saw it, and I can't remember much about it (except there is a Murphy bed in one scene, I believe, and I have always been a sucker for Murphy beds after having one in my first apartment, oh, soooo long ago!). T think this film was made around 1956, which is before our Mad Men era, but should still have some of the same flavor, perhaps.

Thanks, z, for the reminder...I love that movie!
Everybody be looking for her scene toward the last when she mixes up those killer martinis! sooooo funny, and totally Judy.
Thanks for the heads-up, Z. I will watch "Pffft!" tonight. I think I saw it many years ago, but the memory is faint.
I did see Judy Holliday in "Born Yesterday" on Broadway in 1947. (It had opened in 1946 and I saw it a year later when visiting relatives in Manhattan.) Holliday was also in the film version in 1950, but with different men in major parts.
One line from the play I remember clearly to this day. Billie Dawn (Holliday), mistress to a loud-mouthed, insensitive rich man, is at odds with him over something she wants to do. She tells her tutor (but that's another story) that "If he don't come across, I don't come across!"
I thought it was pretty daring to state the obvious insinuation out loud! But this was 1947, and I was a girl from the boondocks.
Two parts gin and one part vermouth, and don't bruise the gin! Judy Holliday was delightful. I think she used about 2 cups of gin and 1 teaspoon of vermouth. Maybe Drink and Smoke can tell us if that recipe is correct for a good martini!
I enjoyed seeing the movie again. I especially liked seeing the sets and the women's wardrobes. Loved Kim Novak's first dress! Wish the movie had been in color.
I was wrong about the bed, though. It was not the typical Murphy bed that folded down from the wall. This was a bed that shot out from the wall, and frankly, I can't understand how there would be room for the bed on the other side of the wall. I did like the round bed, but Jack Lemmon was right - where in the world would you find round sheets and blankets?
One last note, I think Kim Novak was directed to do an imitation of Marilyn Monroe - she was quite good, but there was a very distinct MM note to her acting in a couple of places - even her voice was pure MM a couple of times. I guess she decided to be herself in other movies, as this is the only time I have ever noticed her doing a Marilyn impersonation. She did a very good impression, however - just shows what a good actress she was.
I agree with all your comments.
I will add that the part where Judy's mom takes her out to their many-martinis lunch and Judy gets tipsy and loud was hilarious.
I also loved it when she took the butter pat from Jack's plate and rubbed it on her (stuck) wedding ring and slipped it off and threw it at him. She was sooooo delightful to watch.
Is something going on on the site? All the avatars are gone....??
I don't know, SCfan, but I have noticed a definite lack of activity on our favorite forum. I hate to see this happening, as I love all our conversations here. I have been wondering when Greytone will start the January movie discussion, too.
