Talk: Mad Men: January 2009
Remember how Rachel Menken decided to not eun away with Don Draper at the end of Season 1? Then at a critical moment in Season 2 Rachel ran into Don where she introduced him to her new husband?
Our beloved Rachel Menken Katz is played by the talented Maggie Siff. Following Season 1 of MM she appeared as a series regular on "Sons of Anarchy"
On January 28 Maggie Siff began a recurring role on the ABC series "Life on Mars" as Maria Belanger, a sympathetic social worker who is attracted to the series lead. Lets us say "Maria" is more sexually adventurous that was "Rachel" Maybe it is a function of the times, since Life on Mars takes place in 1973.
Perhaps while we wait of Season 3 of Mad Men we can enjoy Jon Hamm on 30 Rock; Maggie Siff on Life on Mars; and Rosemarie DeWitt (Midge Daniels in Season 1) as "Charmaine" on "United States of Tara"

I really like Roger he has this certain kind of appeal, we know he's a romanticist. Though I think it goes beyond that. What does his character do for you?Do you like him? Is he some what distracted about his own agendas. What is it? Help me Madicts!

I would love to see a re-make of one of the first mini-series events, "Rich Man, Poor Man" (Feb., 1976) with Jon playing Tom Jordache (the baddie brother) and the guy from JAG playing Rudy (the goodie brother). What a story! What plots! What talent to be showcased.
How about it, Maddicts? Do you agree? And what other roles would you like to see our Jon play?

I am doing a paper using contrast comparison. I thought that Gatsby and Draper would be fun and entertaining. I have my outline finished and would like to hear some of your feelings about the two fictional charactors. I would also appreciate any opinions anyone may have on the topic I chose.

Don´t get me wrong. I loved the last DVD and thought it was outstanding with several different tracks of commentaries on each and every episode.
The comments were mostly good and fun.
The only thing that bothered me a bit about that was that some of it seemed to have nothing with what happened on-screen. Like it was recorded separately or something. I cant say that was the deal, but sometimes it got quite strange with all the interesting things happening and you wanted to know something about it, while someone instead talked in length about something that had nothing to do with the scene. Like for example, I thought Elisabeth´s comments were mostly wonderful, but all the talk about the fatsuit throughout several (for me) important scenes just became frustrating after a while.
Also, I would like better special-material. Those short films I had already seen on AMCs homepage. It didn´t give much having them there. It would be great with some stuff exclusive for the DVD only. Interviews and bloopers and behind the scenes maybe? Just something we haven´t seen before.
But it´s just minor whining I guess.
Personally, I can´t wait for the new DVDs.

Usually I don't mind the commercials but some of the commercials are inappropriate and offensive for public television. I have always enjoyed AMC and hope these male enhancement commercials die a painful death soon.

Caught only part of "Trust Me" tonight...forgot it was on.
I will say, however, Tom Cavanaugh has beautiful turquoise eyes! He's kinda sexy in a "Pete Campbell" sort of way. Griffin Dunne is sexy and great as usual. It's no Mad Men, but it's better than I thought it would be.

I just was reading back on some of the previous threads and came across the post of pinkpen (in the Jennifer Aniston thread around Jan. 1) about sexy being "embedded in the person" and (paraphrasing here) no amount of makeup, etc. can give it to them if they don't have it natrually.
I so agree...What do you all think makes a person sexy?
As for me, I say that Jon Hamm is an example of a man having EVERY quality that makes someone sexy. Period. His pic should be in the dictionary after the word "sexy".
What are your thoughts, Maddicts?

Here we go again, Maddicts!
As promised, I am posting the thread for our third Movie Mad-ness discussion!
This month our discussion will be about Alfred Hitchcock and his movies, including (but not limited to): "North by Northwest," "Vertigo," "Psycho," "Strangers on a Train," "The Lady Vanishes," and "Shadow of a Doubt." In addition, we will discuss the 1960 movie directed by Frederico Fellini, "La Dolce Vita."
This is the place to share your thoughts about these movies and explain why (in your opinion) Weiner inserted certain scenes from them into Mad Men. Why does Weiner continue to allude to Hitchcock's movies, and are the parts smoothly integrated or recognizable only when brought to your attention after time and thought?
Was Weiner trying to make a statement on the society of the day, commenting on a character's behavior, or paying homage to Hitchcock's directorial style? Identify the specific scene, language, or character that ties the movie to Man Men, and tell us if you think the association was appropriate or successful? Were you alive at the time these movies were released? Where were you at the time you first saw the movies, and what was your reaction to them? Feel free to share related tidbits about the real-life antics of the stars in these movies...they are a welcome addition to the discussion!
I look forward to another lively discussion and will post my comments right along with you. (...just a reminder, I am not an AMC moderator, just a fan like yourself!)

Congrats to Elisabeth Moss who has announced her engagement to Fred Armisen of SNL. Wonder if they met when she did a cameo with Jon Hamm?
There are so many funny parallels here - Fred plays Barack Obama, so in a virtual way, EMoss is becoming the "first lady," which is ironic because she was previously the first daughter.
Read about it: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b80371_mad_mens_elisabeth_moss_snls_fred.html

There seems to be a tight bond between Don and Freddie that was hinted at during SML. Don was very hesitant to go along with Roger (and Duck's) decision regarding Freddie. Given how Freddie was the first to notice Peggy's abilities and then Don's nurturing of her, how similar was this to how Don came in and then rose at SC ? Given the possible emotional ties between the 3, and a hint from MW that Freddie will return in S3, it will be interesting to see how this develops.

Well, as soon as I read about them, I knew I wanted them. Paper dolls! Joan Holloway paper dolls! What fun. I was crazy about paper dolls when I was a little girl. I had a Doris Day paper doll with the most beautiful clothes, and an Esther Williams doll with about a dozen different swim suits. I couldn't wait for my mother to get the latest McCall's magazine so I could cut out the little girl paper doll - gosh, what the heck was her name? Does anyone else remember playing with paper dolls or am I the only one?
Of course, if I have a Joan doll, I would need a Roger doll, too, and if I have Joan and Roger, well they have to go to work, so I would need the rest of the SC office staff. I would want Don and Betty, too, although probably I would never dress Don, just leave him in his underwear. Betty would only need her polka dot dress or maybe her riding costume. I would want a before and after Peggy doll - maybe one with a removable pony tail would be fun. Oh, the office parties I could stage!

I'm impressed with the series. It has terrific acting & writing. I lived in the era and it hits all the right notes. That is why I was shocked, having heard in a featurette what a stickler Mr. Weiner was for getting the period correct. He certainly has with one exception. In S1 Ep 10 & Ep 13 both Peggy Olson & Don Draper use a hack phrase made popular in the early 21st Century. The phrase/rejoinder " Excuse me?" as a response of affronted incredulity, was never employed in that way in 1960 or any year for decades. It may be 2 flat notes in an otherwise wonderful symphony. But I heard them & can't believe they were used. Other than that MAD MEN is 5 stars.

There is a movie on late tonight, or I should say early tomorrow morning, that I would love to see again, so I am hoping TCM replays it soon at a more reasonable hour. It is a 1964 Jack Lemmon film entitled "Good Neighbor Sam." I can just barely remember it, but it involves a happily married man who works for an advertising firm. He is put in charge of a new dairy account simply because he is the only one in the agency with a "happy wholesome home life," which is a requirement of the dairy owner (Edward G.Robinson) or he will take his business to another advertising firm. The complications start when Jack Lemmon's character, with his wife's approval, agrees to pose as the husband of their divorced next door neighbor so she can inherit several million dollars from a relative whose will stipulates she be in a happy marriage or she cannot collect. Of course, nothing goes according to plan, as the dairy owner thinks the divorcee is Jack's real wife and the ex-husband (Mike Connors) shows up.
I always liked Jack Lemmon, and I am quite sure I enjoyed this picture. I would like to see it again to see if I still enjoy it, and also because of the time period and the fact that it is set in the world of advertising. I know it sounds like an episode of "Bewitched," but I enjoyed "Bewitched," too, so sue me. If any of you Maddicts remember this movie or stay up late to see it, let me know what you think.
Oh, and one other note, his wife is played by Dorothy Provines, a pretty blonde actress who was in a 50's TV show entitled "The Roaring Twenties." That and playing the sister to Hayley Mills in "That Darned Cat," are the only roles I can remember her in.

Sunday night I tried to watch the season opener of Big Love...yecch! They jumped the shark in the first ten minutes, plus the time-worn shtick of having a character have a cancer scare, plus the usual build-up to drama that gets diffused and everything is fine again, crisis averted. Same o same o - But what really made me sit up- a whole lot of "praise" from different newspapers and critics. One of which was from a Los Angeles newspaper that said something like, "If there is any better drama series on TV, we don't know what it is." Uh, try looking at the Golden Globes awards for best drama series for the last two years, doofus. MM has set a new bar, so I would like to see some OTHER excellent writing, pacing and maybe a series that is not an insult to our intelligence. There must be somebody beside Matt Weiner who can produce a good show? ( Maybe? I hope?)

While rummaging through a long-neglected closet recently I came across a cache of beautiful, hand-made aprons handed down to me thru the too-many years. They are so beautiful, made by skilled woman's hands; crocheted roses, appliqued delicate flowers on real linen. They were put away for "when company comes", then put on, delicately cleaned and....put away, and, then, unfortunately, forgotten. Aprons evolved into something of a fashion statement and in the 1960's, we still wore them (out here). We didn't have fabrics back then that washed well when stained......even splashed water could ruin a silk dress. I guess I'll have to keep these as family heirlooms - no one wants them - but it would be nice to see the gals on MadMen wear some.....and I wonder if crocheting is a lost art now....?

Aside from being totally freaked out by the crash yesterday - and totally thankful to God that everyone is okay - I was momentarily amused when the commentators mentioned an American Airlines flight that crashed in the river and they couldn't remember what year it was. Thing is.
I want Matthew Wiener back and I am sure more people than I want the same thing.
Don Draper, Peggy Olsen, Pete Campbell and Joan Holloway among others, started out like little sparks in Matthew Wieners head. Only he know their core, their background, their inner thoughts and their future.
We still peeling off the layers here. What happens if someone else takes over? What Matthew Wiener had in mind for the characters that are his creation will just be someone else´s take on it.

I can no longer tolerate normal, mediocre TV shows. I used to enjoy dumb, mindless stuff like Grey's Anatamy, Desperate Housewives, etc. but now I can't watch more than 5-10 minutes of them. I now insist on watching things that will make me think and make me look for the deep hidden meanings. The last broadcast TV show to do that for me was The West Wing. (I SO want to be CJ.) I can honestly say that I no longer have any shows I enjoy on broadcast TV, except Dancing with the Stars. If I have the TV on now it's usually on MSNBC. Have any of the rest of you experienced this?

Hey, Maddicts, I have read on various threads some of your memories of past activities in the Big Apple. I recall someone talking about seeing a Broadway play with a very young Gena Rowlands and Edward G. Robinson (I think). Others have talked about different restaurants. Well, I find these memories interesting and entertaining, and I would love to read more of them. So, if you have a story to tell of what you were doing in New York City back in the 50s and 60s, please share. Did you see Cary Grant at the Plaza when they were filming "North By Northwest" or scream for the Beatles at Shea Stadium? Did you see the opening night of "Camelot" or "My Fair Lady?" Did you hang out at Toots Shor's and see Sinatra or dance at the Copa or maybe just shopped at Macy's for your wedding dress? How does the line go? "There are a million stories in the naked city." Well, c'mon, let's hear them. Please.

There was a discussion on one of the movie threads a while back (can't remember which one) about the great Judy Holliday. This evening TCM is showing "Pffft!" starring Judy Holliday and Jack Lemmon. I am looking forward to seeing it again as it has been many years since I last saw it, and I can't remember much about it (except there is a Murphy bed in one scene, I believe, and I have always been a sucker for Murphy beds after having one in my first apartment, oh, soooo long ago!). T think this film was made around 1956, which is before our Mad Men era, but should still have some of the same flavor, perhaps.

Just got my February copy of "Vanity Fair" and found an interesting article inside on January Jones. I must say, if Don Draper saw these pictures, he would never stray again!! She is certainly a beautiful woman, and I almost did not recognize her as the actress playing "our Betty." Once again she is compared to a Hitchcock blonde, while her Mad Men character is described as "uncorking a magnum of cool wrath.....emerging as the show's presiding enigma.....while inching along a hairline crack of hysteria." Yeah, that sounds like our girl!
