1961-the lost year

It's a long cold winter for many of us, so why not amuse ourselves by wondering what the characters were up to in 1961, the year that was "skipped" between Seasons 1 and 2. The writers gave us some clues: Don had an affiair with somebody named Sarah who works at Random House (thanks, Bobbie Barrett for that clue); Betty took up riding; Sal got married; Peggy took Don's advice and escaped from the hospital and went back to work; Joan met Dr. Greg; and Rachel Mencken married Tilden Katz.

But what else happened?

Good topic --

1. Roger recovered from two heart attacks and probably had NO sex at all because Mona was afraid he'd die doing it - apparently she hadn't heard the same reports Vickie ("head" case) had.

2. Bert Cooper's Alzheimers began to set in.

3. Pete and his father didn't speak, except to argue about dog breeds.

4. Duck moved to New York, had occasional visits with Chancey and secretly hoped to get his wife back, while she was out with someone else.

5. Pete and Trudy had lots and lots of sex trying to make babies.

6. Francine made Carlton's life a living hell. Carlton coped by eating everything in site, including the pie cooling in the window.

7. Rachel Menkin returned from her hiatus after giving up her baby for adoption and agreeing to marry her father's friend Tilden Katz as a way of saying thank you to Daddy for not disowning her. Tilden and Sal Romano are former lovers. Whenever Tilden asks if she wants anything she always replies, "Yes, please."

8. Joan meets a cute guy in a bar, lies about her age, and takes him home with her. He was less than stellar in bed. She has no plans to see him again but learns he's a doctor. Plus he's really into her and she knows her time is running out. Even though he is physically and sexually abusive to her she tolerates it because that's how Dad always treated Mom and she thinks that's what marriage is, and besides her time is running out.

9. Jane finishes high school.

10. Freddy Rumsen gets drunk and learns how to play masterpieces on his zipper.

11. Bert's sister Alice traps minks and has them made into a stole, faces and all.

12. Betty's dad marries Gloria. Betty attends the wedding and scowls the whole time, while insisting her dad put saccharin in his coffee.

13. Glen Bishop sits in his room fantasizing about Betty while "reading" magazines.

Another fun topic! In 1961, the missing year,

Bert Cooper attended inaugural celebrations for President John F. Kennedy in order to mend fences with powerful people who knew Sterling Cooper had worked for the Nixon campaign.

Don and Betty did some redecorating in their house, replacing the furniture in the living room with more modern pieces.

Sally, now seven, helped her father by adding olives, cherries, and lemon slices to the drinks he mixed.

Peggy gave her baby away and moved to her own apartment in Brooklyn.

Paul moved to an apartment in Montclair, New Jersey, and met Sheila while grocery shopping.

Betty took classes in international cooking, began to wear slacks around the house, and added a few stylish sheaths to her wardrobe of full-skirted dresses.

Betty and Don drifted farther apart. Betty grew increasingly fustrated by her inability to penetrate Don's exterior facade. As Don grew more detached, Betty tried harder. Their sex life became more sporadic, increasing her anxiety and increasing his desire to connect with someone else. Don became increasingly detached from Betty and his children, leading him to a short but intense affair that he found unrewarding. A lack of involvement at home, lack of an outlet for his fustrations and subtle changes at SC have Don on the verge of seeing his proffessional reputation diminsh.

Roger Sterling slowly resumed a normal life. His recovery gave him an opportunity to reflect on his life. He realised that he no longer wanted to be wtih Mona, and that his interest in his family was only for the sake of his daughter. He has begun to question his "worth". Partly as a reaction to his feelings that life may be passing him by, he supports Duck at SC and advocates a different approach towards clients and ad copy. As a result, he risks antagonising Don, but is willing to take the risk.

Bert Cooper slowly began to show signs of that he was getting older. While still capable of periods of stunning clarity, his idiosynchrasies became more pronounced. He has aquiesced to Duck and Roger concerning the future of SC, but secretly feels that Don has the best instincts for the future of the firm.

Duck Phillips came into the firm and had an immediate impact: his efforts brought Kodak to the conferance table and allowed Don to create "The Wheel" at the end of S-1. Duck feels that his instant success should have translated into more influence within SC, but has become increasingly fustrated by the power that Don Draper has within the firm. Duck has come to view the emerging boomer children as the key to future of advertising and has become increasingly vocal about his feelings. He is able to enlist Roger as an ally, as both want to make their mark on the firm, but for different reasons.

Pete and Trudy concentrate on creating a baby. Their inability to do so leads to increasing anxiety in their relationship. Trudy has become more critical of Pete and Pete has begun to question his marriage and his masculinity. At SC however, he has become better at his job, in part due to the Clearasil account.

Peggy returned from her mysterious leave of absense as if nothing happened. She has begun to have a significant influence on ad copy for SC. Many of her ideas have been incoprorated into campaigns and she has begun to earn respect from others in the SC creative team and from clients. On a personal level she remained quiet and basically submissive at SC, which made it easier for her collegues to continue to treat her as an elevated secretary instead of as a peer.

Joan met and became engaged to Dr. Greg. She regretted her decision from almost the beginning of the relationship, but also knew that on paper her choice was a good one, because in the conventional sense, he is extremely desirable.

Sal reconnected with Kitty and genuiniely fell in love with her. Below the surface he feels that something is not quite right and blames himself- though he does not know why he feels this way. He cares for Kitty and does not want hurt her.

Paul made a big deal about moving out of the city and has touted the benefits of Montclair to anyone that would listen- partly to convince himself. He met Sheila at the grocery store and then ran into her at a community event. In a social environment they connected because she thought he was genuine and he was impressed with how progressive he felt he was.

Harry and his wife were estranged for a month or 2, but eventually reconciled. Harry and his wife have an unspoken agreement that he will not go out very much after business hours and the will be the dutifull husband. For his part, this is all Harry really wanted and has become happier. Their decision to have a baby was an affirmation of their renewed commitment to their marriage and to each other.
