I maybe wrong but I believe that Dick Whitman was thrown into Don Draper's life in the shoot out and whoever found him, found him as Draper. So he went with it. I guess he felt he had nothing to lose and had nothing to go back too. You would have thought the driving force in his life would have been his kid brother, but opportunity knocked and he jumped at it.

My recollection is that Dick make the dog tag switch... It's hard for me to understand why Dick could not just disappear into a new life w/o changing his idendity.... He could have simply taken a bus to parts unknown when he was discharged from the Army..Other than the kid brother, he had no connection to 'home'..I felt we saw the beginnings of a run away plan when he spent time w/ the hobo ...I saw the seed planted right then. Though the hobo admitted that he had a wife,family and home that he left behind, Dick saw him as honorable....There must have been something in Draper that Dick admired, else why bother.? Did that name give him some feeling of new worth ?

The primary reason for the Dick/Don switch was because he wanted to get the hell out of the army and out of Korea. The real Don Draper's tour of duty was nearly completed when he got blown to smithereens. Dick Whitman's tour was just beginning. By switching identities, Dick/Don insured that he'd be getting out of Dodge much sooner -- plus he'd get officer benefits and treatment, which was much better than he'd have received as an enlisted man. On one of the behind the scenes videos, both Matt Weiner and Jon Hamm suggest that's the primary reason for his identity switch.

Was the little brother actually a blood brother? If I remember, Don's dad died and his stepmother remarried, and so wasn't that brother the son of Don's stepmother and husband number 2?

Flowerpower, you're right on, I don't think there was any blood connection between them. And I also think there was some kind of happening in Dick's past that he'll do anything to keep secret.

And the 'brother' was aware of it or they shared whatever happened. This 'brother' wasn't too swift, maybe one can missing out of a six-pack, and with him around, with this knowledge, he posed too much of a threat to Dick.

So, Dick pays him off with big bucks. Then the guy hangs himself? There had to be a reason for that....a big reason. A shared guilty concience the guy couldn't live with even with the big cash payoff?

As for the dog tags being switched, this was not that unusual in time of war and it gave Dick a new start and a way to escape his past and what he had done or was involved in.

It's a mystery alright and I'm saying it involved their "mother" who Dick clearly despised....
