Movie Mad-ness Schedule

Hello, Maddicts!....
I've done my best to take our nominations and group them by popularity so we see as many films as possible over the next nine months. I've made every effort to group the most popular movies for viewing first, and (although I am not a movie buff) did my best to create interesting groupings. Watch at least one movie during the month from the group. Yes, of course you can watch all the movies listed, or all the movies by the actor or actress of the month. You are allowed to be as invested as the time you have to spare. It should be fun. Keep in mind the reason why the movie made our list, or what film or cinematic device was used in Mad Men, the series.

Return to the forum to discuss everything the last (Sun-Sat) week of each month. I will post the discussion thread for each month the last Sunday in each month to begin the discussion. Mark the thread "Recommended" for easy access during the month.

I thank everyone who contributed toward the creation of this list of movies. In case this forum is re-organized or goes silent during the hiatus, I plan to continue my movie-watching experience alone, waiting until the new season premieres.

It will be so much more fun reading everyone’s comments ‘til then, especially because I’ve never seen any of them before.

This is like a grand adventure...!

I still don't know how to mark a thread (topic?) "recommended" when you are the originator.

Heck, I can't even mark my "favorites" in my profile and I have no idea what that even means. I'm not exactly computer literate or savvy.

Just click the word "Recommended" right above Comments above....

I stumbled across a listing in wikipedia for an old Rock Hudson/ Doris Day movie called Lover Come Back, read this blurb and see if it sounds strangely familiar: Lover Come Back is a 1961 romantic comedy starring Doris Day, Rock Hudson and Tony Randall.
Although not as well known as Pillow Talk (1959), this romantic-comedy pairing of stars Rock Hudson and Doris Day earned an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay.
The story concerns life in a New York advertising agency. Hudson stars as Jerry Webster, a Madison Avenue ad executive who has achieved success not through hard work or intelligence but by wining and dining his clients, even setting them up on dates with attractive girls. Jerry's equal at a rival agency is Carol Templeton (Day). Although she has never met him, Carol is disgusted by Jerry's unethical antics and reports him to the Ad Council. Jerry avoids trouble with his usual aplomb, sending a comely chorus girl, Rebel Davis (Edie Adams), to seduce the council members.
Jerry then promises Rebel a spot in commercials, so he shoots commercials featuring her for VIP, a non-existent product .......... I cut this short but it sounds like it might be relative to MM at least in subject, location and genre.

Hi FreddyRumsen!
I remember "Lover Come Back!" It was one of my favorites when I was a kid!
I loved the whole VIP thing!
I thought of the movie when I saw Mad Men, but, I couldn't remember the name...
Thanks for the memories!!

Was Tony Randall who Pete saw in a bathroom during the LA trip, or was it Tony Curtis?

A thing like that!

Darlings, you can not possible leave "What a Way to Go" off your list - Shirley MacLaine 1964 movie w/ all star cast & Edith Head costumes to die for...if you've never seen it you're really missing out...

user-pic

It was Tony Curtis Pete saw in the bathroom in LA, trudyisannoying. They were both very popular in the 60's and they probably got mixed up quite a bit. Cheers! ;o)

Oh I loved Shadow of Doubt, The Apartment. I have a question, what is the reason for the actors name below the movies. Also you have to add the movie The Misfits to your list.

Chelsea...
The names (of the actor or actress) were mentioned during the season and were nominated by the participants. Everyone should feel free to watch any movie by the actor or actress during that month and return to discuss its relationship to the series or era.

Marilyn Monroe and Alfred Hitchcock were top vote getters in their categories. Hitchcock has so many favorites, he deserved a month of his own. Marilyn had so few it would be easy to see them all. I hope feel inspired to watch "The Misfits" during that month.

Is this going to be the official thread for the discussion of The Apartment (got mine from library) or are we to go to the "other" thread where all the movies are listed? OR will there be a new thread for each month?

user-pic

I will create a separate thread for each discussion the last Sunday in every month.

Cool greytone.

I know that Barbara Stanwyck was in "Executive Suite" which is scheduled to be discussed later thatn Nov. I found only 2 movies in the early 60's that she was in. "Walk on the Wild Side" and "Rawhide". She was actually more famous for TV at that time, starring in "The Big Valley". In what capactity was she mentioned on MadMen - movies or TV?

This is a little off-topic, but we saw "Changeling" yesterday and it is excellent. Don't miss it. I'm pretty sure the judge in the film is the same actor who plays Betty's father. After you see the movie, google "Christine Collins" and get the rest of the story. The movie barely grazes it, yet it's powerful. It's amazing that, for the most part, nobody has ever heard of this case.

Jamblermm...
hagan informed us that Pete (?) told Trudy "...You look like a young Barbara Stanwyck..." Remember? There's no need to be ultra literal, so feel free to watch whichever part of her career you desire.

MicheleKay...
My list of movies is getting so long! I'll add your recommendation particularly because of the real life tie-in. Love it!

Just finished watching Thirteen Days. I am still digesting how different things were where I lived, or I should say, "in my world" as a 12 year old female in California. That's about little Glen's age...and you see how confused he is!

Pillow Talk has been playing on TCM for the last two weeks. All of you may be able to catch it before the months out. Edith Head really had some great designs for some great movies!
