Mad Men vs. Bewitched
Mad Men is a GREAT show! I just discovered it on iTunes so I got to watch two seasons worth of shows back to back.
The first thing I noticed was how much Mad Men looked like the old Bewitched series. Obviously they are on different ends of the spectrum - one being a dramatic series and the other a sitcom with a magic element but the style and look of both shows is the same, ie. clothing, products, cars, etc. because both shows take place in the same time period. (Of course Bewitched was actually filmed during the early sixties.)
But it's more than that.
Not only do both shows have the main character working as a pitchman in an ad agency, but the rest of the casting is surprisingly similar too.
*Don Draper, the slick creative ad executive, looks a lot like Darren Stevens - though admittedly better looking.
*Don's wife, Betty Draper, is a gorgeous blonde housewife just like Samantha Stevens. *Samantha and Betty are from powerful families and married beneath themselves (or at least that how their parents felt).
*They each have two kids - a girl and a boy, in that order.
*The first thing they do when they come home from work or have friends over is to make drinks at the bar in their living room.
*AND to top it all off Don's boss is just like Darren's boss Larry Tate! They both are white-haired blowhards that seemingly have no function at work other than getting handsomely paid and barking at employees.
All this show needs is a nosy neighbor and a little nose wiggling by Betty and we'd have Bewitched back in our living rooms!

Thanks Micah. That was great!
I think "Duck" reminds me of a combination of the two actors who played Darrin - 60% Sargent, 40% York!
Check out how the last episode of season 2 had a strong basis in "Alice in Wonderland" in my visually annotated blog:

let me know what you think!
Mad Mango, have you written anything else on Mad Men besides the two blogs? I loved reading them as they were very insightful and interesting.
Thanks so much for the kind feedback!
I'm going to start back at the beginning - One interesting nugget I've picked up from re-viewing season one - the scene in the very first show where Peggy goes to the doctor to get "The Pill" - when the doc asks her to put her feet in the stirrups and examines her, the scene is shot in almost exactly the same way as the scene where Joan is raped by here fiance. Interesting, no?
Great reading, Mad Mango! Enjoyed it very much. Thanks especially for posting the Christopher Robin poem and Don's letter.
A show so rich deserves the deluxe treatment! Thanks so much for the kind words.
Oh yeah, lots of similarities here, but I bet Larry Tate never played "horsie" with a set of twins after hours, lolol!
Oh, Libby, you know he would have if Endora or Serena cast a spell on him - or maybe Uncle Arthur! Of course, Darrin would yell, Samantha would remove the spell, and Larry would go home to Louise like a good husband with his memory wiped clean. That Darrin ruined more good fun....
