Talk: Mad Men: November 2008
Part of the fun and the problem with the too numerous discussions is that they get off topic - holiday plans, vacation suggestions, employment/financial woes, birth announcements, restaurant recommendations, etc.
So, if you would like to connect with a regular contributor to the Mad Men blog, why not post it here? Consider this Talk Topic as an open forum for anything related to the audience of the greatest show on television.

2008 will represent one of America's great transition years for many reasons: the election of Barack Obama with an all time turn out of previously disengaged voters; the collapse of the banking system; the Big Three possibly becoming the Big One (or even the Big None); despite recent drops in prices, serious change in consumer behavior about energy; withdrawal plans for the Iraq war; the realization that so many of our institutions are broken down and need to be fixed: government, health care, social security/retirement, banking/real estate, our infrastructure.
I believe 1964 will be the year where we get to see the Tsunami of change hit the shores of Sterling Cooper. While 1968 was the most eventful and important year of the 60's, the events of 1964 laid down the foundation of this decade. I have categorized some of the events of this year to provide a context for the expected Season 3 of Mad Men.

As someone new to the Men, I would love to see all the episodes of season 2. Does anyone know if AMC will be replaying them pior to season 3? Or am I doomed to wait for the Season 2 DVD set due in July?
Or is anyone aware of any other options? Thanks, George.

"Available now for pre-order and will ship in July 2009.
From Matthew Weiner, the Emmy® award-winning executive producer and writer of "The Sopranos," "MAD MEN" is the ground-breaking, daring series about the glamorous and ego-driven "Golden Age" of advertising, where everyone is selling something and nothing is ever what it seems"

Please somebody fill me in! I haven't kept up with the latest news on the "negotiations" twixt Weiner et. al, and AMC...nor do I know the financial strength of a "non-premium channel" like AMC, but before I implore AMC to "meet Mr Weimer"s demands" at any cost, I would first THANK AMC for being the entity that took a chance with MadMen--when from what I've read, many others (including Weimer"s then-employer HBO) turned him down!

I'm tryting to find information on a song that played during Season 1 Episode 8 'The Hobo Code' and it's not listed on this website. The track is playing during the beatnik scene in the middle of the episode in which Don is lying down with Midge and Roy, and Midge asks Don "Do you Like it?" to which he responds with the line about Dorothy and colours. The song is very mellow with what sounds like a Spanish guitar.
The official song listing says it is Miles Davis' Concierto de Aranjuez but that was the song playing immediately previous, and the only other two listed songs are certainly not jazz tracks. I listened through Miles Davis' entire 'Sketches of Spain' album, of which Concierto belongs, and did not hear it.
So does anyone know the name of the track the artist?

Today I went to the matinee performance of "Speed-The-Plow" on Broadway, starring Jeremy Piven, Raul Esparza, and Elisabeth Moss. It was terrific! Much better than I expected. After the performance, the actors ask for donations for Broadway Cares, an AIDS charity. It's a Broadway tradition that at this time of year the actors come forward after the show to personally raise money for this very worthy cause. Elisabeth was standing right at the door taking donations. As I dropped some money into the pot, I looked her right in the eye and said, "I just want to tell you how much I love Mad Men -- the best show on television. The greatest show EVER on television." She smiled, and said "Thank you." She was very sweet and much prettier in person than she appears on the show. She was also terrific in her part as the temporary secretary in this tale of Hollywood greed and ambition. Just thought I'd share my brush with greatness. Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Hello Maddicts!..
This is the day! As promised, I am posting the discussion thread for our first Movie Mad-ness discussion. This month, "The Apartment," "BU-tterfield 8" and Barbara Stanwyck were the focus of our cinema fascination.
This is the place to tell us what you thought about them and explain why (in your opinion) Weiner inserted them in the series. Were they an important part of the conversation, or just inserted to mark time? Were you alive at that time? Were these movies, actors, or attitudes a part of your world? Were your attitudes toward them similar or different?
I look forward to a lively discussion and will post my comments right along with yours I am not the AMC moderator, just a fan like yourself.

It was a great time for network primetime television, the years 1960-64. Who here remembers the fun of watching kid-friendly series like The Rifleman (1958-63), The Beverly Hillbillies (1962-71), Gilligan's Island (1964-67), Bewitched (1964-72) and all the rest? What you think Sally Draper made of the sometimes strange world-views potrayed in these shows? And - impressionable as she was - how do you think she used them to interpret her life as a schoolgirl in boring old Ossining?

I love this series and it reflects what I recall about that era as accurately as anything possibly can from this distance. The prevalent male attitude toward women was why I entered what was at that time one of the few male-dominated professions in which women had a half-way decent shot at success...journalism.
Less important, but equally interesting to many, are the accoutrements of that era.
While the show's men's fashions seem spot on, the women's are more rooted in the mid-'50s than the last of that decade and on into 1960. I was wearing straight-line, empire or A-line silhouettes by1958 and much shorter skirts by 1960. Some of my dresses were still the fitted sheaths these secretaries wear, but the tight waisted, full-skirted shirt dresses were long gone in 1960. The last full-skirt, tight-waist dresses I had in that era were evening wear only.

What are your favorites? I have to admit, I look for things every week that no longer "exist" (or rather, they exist but not in my world, lol!)
Things like frozen orange juice concentrate, hurling a beer can across the park rather than throwing it away, dry cleaner bags as toys, those little ashtrays that had cigarette holders built into them (I always thought they looked like ducks) and lamps with bases that looked like people - and TV lamps. Remember those?

I like to delve into Dick Whitman's morph into who he becomes as Don Draper.. How easy would it have been ? Was the switch in dogtags enough ? Were there any other bureaucratic hurdles? Was the dogtag # simply a SS#?
Dick only observed Lt Draper for a few days, we know that Anna was not mentioned.. Hard for a woman to understand that so little personal info was shared, course they were under fire and had that life 'n death thing to deal with....
What kind of conversation transpired that Dick felt that if his life could be different/better if he had Lt Draper's karma?

My son was watching "American Wedding", a typically dumb teen flick in the "American Pie" franchise tonight and I noticed January Jones had a pretty big part as the main female character's sister. It must have been filmed fairly recently as she looked and acted very similar to her Betty character. I checked online and most sites other than IMDB don't even credit her in the Bio.

Mad Men is a GREAT show! I just discovered it on iTunes so I got to watch two seasons worth of shows back to back.
The first thing I noticed was how much Mad Men looked like the old Bewitched series. Obviously they are on different ends of the spectrum - one being a dramatic series and the other a sitcom with a magic element but the style and look of both shows is the same, ie. clothing, products, cars, etc. because both shows take place in the same time period. (Of course Bewitched was actually filmed during the early sixties.)
But it's more than that.

How many Mad Men (& Mad-Ma'ams) does it take to fix a Vodka Martini (stirred, not shaken)?
TEN.
Peggy to pin the martini glass to the table by the stem
Roger to hold the olive(s) in place
The 6 others to put one finger on the glass and walk in succession around the cocktail table three times
Don to stand back and scrutinize intensively for his next presentation
And Joan to report the entire incident to Miss Blankenship

So I love that Betty rides and I love the care that the costume people take to have her clothes look right. But as a rider myself, it drives me crazy that all the tack the horses wear is completely incorrect for the 1960's - it's all modern! Please, Mr. Weiner, find someone who knows period equipment. Does this drive any other horse people crazy?

i watched the show from the beginning and in season one it never really bothered me that don cheated until his affair with Rachael. it was at that point that he wasn't just having an affair but a romance.
in the sopranos i never got angry with Tony's affairs because they never meant anything to him. Carmela was his one and only. with don i just dont know.
he loves betty. i know that. but i feel it is more hurtful that he has true romances with some of these other women.

Hello, Maddicts!....
I've done my best to take our nominations and group them by popularity so we see as many films as possible over the next nine months. I've made every effort to group the most popular movies for viewing first, and (although I am not a movie buff) did my best to create interesting groupings. Watch at least one movie during the month from the group. Yes, of course you can watch all the movies listed, or all the movies by the actor or actress of the month. You are allowed to be as invested as the time you have to spare. It should be fun. Keep in mind the reason why the movie made our list, or what film or cinematic device was used in Mad Men, the series.

I was interested to see that Don seemed to genuinely be personally invested in Freddie. I doubted his humaninty but still harbor the feeling that his underlying motivation was a response to one more stinging barb inflicted by Duck. I'll be excited to learn what kind of future interaction these two work through if Don decides to stay on at SC... With his cool 1/2 mil buyout in the bank and Betty's pregnancy, we will begin to see if Don's desire to heal his family life is a priority .... I got my doubts.. Don is a man of his time and '62 was not the era for personal introspection, especially if it could conflict w/ career goals.

I was dissapointed to see Betty's stumbles during the dinner party. No well brought up young wife would have used Sally and her ballet routine as an entertainment at a business occasion. This would be stictly a performance for adoring grandparents , close family or friends. The next faux pax was serving ramaki as a 2nd course of her dinner. This dish would have been a passed hor d' orve during the cocktail hour.

I wish I had used this blog sooner...would have loved to share.... I just came on and seems like a real neighborhood here...but for what it's worth..... I think Betty had the affair because she knew she was "safe" in not getting pregnant by him since she knew she was already pregnant by Don....Pete is getting what's coming to him....good for Peggy.....go Joan, go Joan and run away from that abusive med student into the arms of who you really want (Roger) because you know he'll take you back in a NY minute. Does Joan realize he's getting a divorce for that young chick? Joan will slice and dice her if she wants Roger. Love the complexity of Don but that whole episode in Calif. was a waste of film that could have been spent on the other interesting office characters. I CANNOT wait for the next season. How long do we have to wait?

I thought this would be a good place for those who need to ask any of the posters a question and don't want to bother the readers of the open thread or special categories!
Patrick Kehoe:
I don't know how you did it, but there is another old song that I have tried to locate and cannot. It is by a very young Tony Bennett entitled "Someone Turned The World Upside Down" ('54?) . If you will tell me your procedure, I'll be happy to search it myself. Many thanks! Sandy

Does anyone know if AMC is going to show the Season 2 episodes again soon? With so many people just catching on to the show now, it seems it would be foolish of AMC to make people wait until the marathon they will probably show just before Season 3. If people are really into it now, how can they be expected to wait 9 or 10 months before seeing Season 2 again?

What about great westerns not on the list? I have long thought "Once Upon a Time in the West" was the best western of all time. Other notable absents include The Big Valley, Sam Peckinpah's works, or even the Hallelujah Trail.
