why does pete campbell think that he saw the "count" in Newport?

He didn't, he was just using the Dykeman name and being the snob that he truly is. He was showing that he was with the newport crowd.

Hi Atlantaloves! Ditto!

I think he did recognize him. Didn't anyone notice how the viscount got a little nervous and quickly said he was not good with faces and names then turned away. I would bet he has been in Newport before. Maybe not in the Dykeman circle but in the same location hanging out.

I agree with the assessment of Willy's nervous reaction to Pete's Newport recognition. Also, I watched the post sex scene with Don and Joy again. When he reached over to her while she was reading, she definately had a look of contempt on her face, before turning to face him with a fake smile.

Something is definately going on. I think that Don's drink was spiked and that's why he collapsed by the pool. They are probably running some kind of blackmail racket.

I just thought of something. Pete probably did meet the count in Newport because the counts' daughter did reveal, while she was in bed with Don, that she went to college in R.I (Pembroke College..I think) and she said it was because she and her dad (the count) had a home there and were living there and going to school there was convenient. I think she also said she did not fit in which is not surprising since spoiled, superficial, snobs, who have no intention of ever holding down a job don't belong in a college where people go to further their education for a chosen vocation. She belongs in California where it is all about how you look and not about what you know.

ScottyGun: Contemptuous look on Joy's face?? Thanks alot! Now you've given me another reason I have to watch it AGAIN tonight. Good catch!

When Don was handed the champagne, Greta said "it's medicinal." Might have been drugged. And "the doctor" was definitely going to inject Don with a shot of dope. Thank God Don had the presence of mind to say no.

Maybe Pete and the Viscount had met before in Newport -- but I tend to think this is the last we've seen of "The Jet Set." Don is too smart to be taken in by them. And he's moving on now to meet the mystery person in Calif.

What about the ending when Don looks at the glass. Was he seeing there was some residue in the glass or was there something else going on that I missed? And, I agree that dimwit Pete brought out the family name to impress, but I also believe Don was targeted by the nomads for some nefarious reasons and Pete might have caught on if he hadn't been Pete.

Hi everyone!
I think Pete wouldn't have been impressed if "the count" was introduced to him as Willie.
I think Pete was just trying to impress "the count" with his mother's maiden name, and the Newport reference.
I don't think he recognized "Willie/the count" at all. I think it was a line.

I'm with you 60's child, ;o) I think Pete was trying to impress the Count (Count Dracula?). I think he was fed up with everyone ignoring him. I had a "royal" laugh when he finally snapped at the bartender and said, "Can I get a drink around here!" Uh, no Pete you can't - get the message? You're being ignored for a reason. LOL Cheers ;o)
