The Romance of Pete and Peggy

Mad Men has not had a real heart-wrenching love story yet. After viewing Pete and Peggy together on last week's show they could make it happen. They have the magic ingredients of restraint and longing (and the acting ability) to tug at your heart strings.

Here's Pete Campbell (John Barrowman) singing "I Won't Send Roses" to Peggy.

Penultimate,
What a lovely song! Can't you just picture Pete saying (or singing) those words to Peggy?

"With words romantic, I'm at a loss.
I'd be the first one to agree
That I'm preoccupied with me."

I think Pete is changing, and I hope a real romance with Peggy blossoms in Season 3!

I have to say, if the writers decide to opt out of a romance between these two, I wouldn't be very interested in watching the show anymore. Not that the other storylines aren't compelling, but Pete and Peggy's chemistry is strong, and I loved watching them evolve into people I didn't expect they'd become. As disappointed as I am, I realize it actually would have been pointless to make them a couple at the end of this season because their story could easily turn into predictable soap opera crap. And who wants that? I love these characters, especially Pete. I used to dispise him for his condescension, amongst other things, but Season 2 filled in a lot of blanks and his ambitions go deeper than just making it to the top at Sterling Cooper. The Betty-Don scenes don't hold my attention nearly enough as those between my favorite underdogs, Peggy and Pete. It is tragic that they cannot share in the joy of raising a child together, but it is what it is. Life is imperfect and people have flaws, which in turn makes for great TV.

If the priest and Peggy have a romance, however, Mad Men will have jumped the shark...

I think Pete should at the very least get to take Peggy out on a date. We'd get the chance to see how they interact alone and outside the office for a change...

I can't really see Pete and Peggy having a romance. It has just been sex. He is such a jerk, and so self involved, that I just couldn't see it.

Remember that episode where she was having fun doing the twist, and Pete said "I hate you when your like this." ? Everything has to be on his terms.

I predict that Peggy will have a real romance with another man, and Pete will be very jealous.

I don't see P&P getting it on in season three at all. I think Peggy as moved on and has left Pete in the dust.

Hi everyone!
I can't see a romance between Pete and Peggy either.
Peggy made it very clear to Pete that she gave up so much because of him, and, she could have trapped him into a relationship because of the baby. I don't think she is interested in him beyond the relationship they already have.

It may be different for Pete. He has professed his love to her, and now there may be a little Pete out there somewhere for him to find.
Can't wait to see what happens...

DeeDee, I do agree with the Pete jealousy thing. He seems very possessive. Remember the dirty look he gave Pegs when she wore that blue dress, sitting on that exec's lap? Even though he cheated on Trudy repeatedly, the mere idea of "his" woman with another guy would really bother him. It could end up distracting him so much that he starts getting really careless and sloppy at work. Then we'd really see a meltdown! He's already proved to be on the unstable side. He took a rifle to work. He tossed that chicken out the window. What's next? Bashing in the copy machine?

Or, alternately, he might become severely depressed and withdrawn. I'm just not sure he's the type to turn to drugs to numb the pain. His drug is women.

It's not that Peggy and Pete WILL or WON'T get it on...the scripts are never straightforward. The plot often HAPPENS to people.

I see something like this:

Don takes his cool half million and starts his OWN agency, pilfering a few staff members from Sterling Cooper, which REALLY pisses off Duck! He'll probably open by bringing back Mohawk.

He'll take Peggy - and Joan - who was terribly hurt that she had script reading whisked away just when she was beginning to enjoy working her mind, etc. (She wants to get away from Roger and Paul, anyway.)

PETE, on the other hand, has already demonstrated some mole tactics. He'll be left behind, agreeing to be a double agent for Don! (He has to get on Peggy's good side, and Don's not yet sure he can be trusted.)

And HOW will he get information about Duck to Don? Well, via Peggy, of course! They'll have to meet in quiet, secluded little hideaways, under the guise of doing BUSINESS! Can't you just see it??

Peggy will INSIST that they are there STRICTLY to transact FACTS, while Pete will talk about everything but, then throw her a few bones, making it take twice as long.

Her loyalty to Don will force her to endure Pete's episodes, to get vital information.

I may DIE before season 3 starts!!

"Peggy will INSIST that they are there STRICTLY to transact FACTS, while Pete will talk about everything but, then throw her a few bones, making it take twice as long."

Bilou, Pete and Peggy should just have their own spinoff show. They could be the Mulder & Scully of the ad world. Then again, they'd never get to kiss until season 8 or 9. Any relationship they'd have beyond a professional one would have to be, sadly, implied.

No, no, no...Pete's declaration of "love" is immature. He barely knows Peggy, how can he love her? They haven't spent any quality time together, other than their couch dates - please! Pete is in "love" with his fantasy of what he thinks Peggy is ("perfect"). No one can live up to an immature fantasy, reality eventually rears its ugly head, and it takes an adult to love and accept a real person, flaws included. Pete is light years away from any such definition - their so-called romance would be another failure for both of them.

A sexual relationship can turn into a romantic, committed one. It's not often the case, but it's possible. Sometimes love doesn't happen by going the traditional route, and the road to getting there can be very complicated.

Speaking from personal experience here, I used to hate, and I mean HATE my last boyfriend while we were just friends during college. Let me rephrase that: we attended a small college and ended up hanging within the same circles. I found him unattractive both in terms of looks and personality. He was a first class suck-up and know-it-all, and he would constantly make really assinine comments and "observations" to/about me. He knew it bothered and sometimes hurt me, but he couldn't take a hint. By senior year, I'd had enough and stopped talking to him altogether. Again, he was perplexed as to why.

Two years later I reluctantly returned one of his phone calls, and we became real platonic friends. Two years after that, we crossed the point of no return. It very casual at first, and though it was a lot of fun, we each lied to the other saying it didn't mean anything, that it was just sex. We hit a major wall because neither of us could admit it for months. Looking back, I still don't know how the hell I ended up deeply in love with someone I used to purposely avoid. Love is strange.

That being said, you really can't predict anything. We'll just have to wait and see what's going to happen in Season 3.

What did I miss? I have watched every episode 2X, but I remember only one time when Peggy had sex (when Pete showed up at her apartment before his wedding). On the MM quiz, it said Peggy had sex in the office. When? and with whom?

user-pic

TipsiM, Peggy and Pete had sex on his office couch (this was the 2nd time--or at least the 2nd time that they did it "on the show" for us to see) in the early AM when no one else was at the office yet (except the janitor saw them (shadows through Pete's office's frosted window glass) this was the same episode where she later "twisted" over to him at P. J. Clark's and he made that "I don't like you like this" remark...both "times" were in Season 1, however. BTW, it was a favorite moment of mine when Trudy showed up unexpectedly to take Pete to see her desired apt./lunch and he lunged forward to grab the couch cushion before she sat down to turn it over!

Like Drink&Smoke posted on another thread..these little unexpected "gems" are part of what makes our beloved MM sooooooo special.

I like these two characters in their own right and i like them together. Their chemistry is great. However, i'm not sure if i'd like them in a settled relationship, at least not now. After all, it is unrequited longing that truely makes or sexy entertainment and they still have unfinished business.
