The Mysterious Disappearance of Don Draper as Reported by Peter Dyckman Campbell
I would assume that when Pete returned to the office someone would want a report on how he and Don did at the convention. Who is Pete going to report to, and what will he say about Don's absence?
I feel sure Pete will not make light of Don's disappearance - he will present it in the worst possible way and at the same time cast himself in the best possible light. If it is Bert Cooper, will he care that much that Don disappeared from the convention and attended none of the meetings? We know Roger cares about such things, as he wanted to know where Don was when the Jimmy Barrett/Utz potato chip fiasco occurred. Don did not tell Roger the truth - he was at a movie - so I guess we can figure he knew Roger would not look kindly on Don's not attending to business. Is it possible Don at some point called the office and gave some kind of explanation to Bert and Roger, that Pete is unaware of? I gotta say, had I been Pete, and Don disappeared on me like that, I would be pretty steamed, especially after all the talk about working not playing. Of course, Pete doesn't really know that Don was playing, does he? That brings up the question of just how hard did Pete look for Don when he didn't turn up for the meeting? Pete is a pretty self-absorbed guy, but would he really fly back to New York without trying to discover Don's fate?

ah, there's the rub.
Maybe something transpired that we don't know about yet -- remember when Pete came back and "did Don come back yet" or "check in yet"? Pete didn't seem to be too terribly worried.
Maybe the bartender there at the hotel told Pete he'd seen Don "leave with a young girl in a convertible" (maybe even remembered her name was"Joy") when Pete asked around after Don never showed at the meeting poolside (valuable info--- which Pete would have, of course, filed away for future use against Don!)
Pete didn't seem too broken up about Don's vanishing since this gives him the opportunity to shine. I think Pete might lay low by diverting to "Oh, I just assumed Don called SC and cleared not returning with me" or something to that effect. I'm not sure he wants another "AHah!" moment with Coop again since his blackmailing efforts failed miserably once before. Pete might want to snoop out what Duck is up to! Disparaging Don to Roger or Bert is the worst way to go, I think, although he may voice his "concern" to Roger who will worry. (Pete might be hoping that Don fell into the Pacific Ocean).
Pete's boss as an Account Executive is Duck who's in charge of Accounts. Roger's the president of the company which is why Media (Harry) reports to him.
So Pete would report to Duck, "...no thanks to Don since I didn't see him after the first day of the convention. We came back from a presentation and he was supposed to be at a meeting after the conference with the GD people and me but he didn't show. I made a lot of solid contacts for future calls based on the leads Roger gave me."
Duck could take it up with Roger or figure Don had cleared it with him. Remember, Don's the partner who made the decision to hire Duck.
It's when Don doesn't return in a day or two that serious questions will be asked.
Don will use his all-purpose excuse, "I was at the printer's."
We need to consider the possobility that don was repeatedly drugged while he was with the "jet set" and has no idea how much time has passed.
Every morning when I wake up I ask myself "Is today Sunday?"
ritt, thanks for sorting out the protocol based on chain of command. it's not pete's place to report to anyone except his direct superior (duck), who would then report to his superior (roger and bert), etc. pete would not directly report to roger or bert regarding don's presence, performance or participation, unless pete were called in and asked a direct question by one of them. if he's smart, he'll avoid making any derogatory comments about don, and will spin it to emphasize the lead role which don had assigned him (pete) play in the meetings. if don's absence is mentioned or questioned, pete would be smart to say that don directed him to conduct the meetings, which pete did. "was don at your meetings?" or "where was don while you were conducting these meetings?" pete: "there were higher level briefings or group presentations and meetings for don to attend with the upper level executives, while i took the meetings with so and so..."
Nope, I don't buy it. When Don told Roger he was going to California in place of either Paul or Pete, Roger said to take Pete because he, Roger, had been holding his hand on a number of calls, or something like that. If Roger was that involved in the pre-planning for the conference, he would naturally want some feedback from Pete and Don once they returned, and I bet he wouldn't want it second hand from Duck.
Gracious, I wish this was Sunday night!
well, suffice it to say, in a normal organization not even a junior partner (don owns only 12.5%) can get away with going awol on a business trip and also failing to return to the office on the appointed day, without explanation, at least to his superiors (roger, bert and any other partner who don't know about). after all, don "has no contract" with the firm to continue his employment.
the only type of junior partner who could get away with that, with little or no negative consequence, is a son or grandson of the majority owner, or perhaps a son-in-law. oh yes, and a junior partner who was the source of very large account(s), who could take account(s) away from the firm if he is fired or demoted.
however, on this program, who knows how roger and bert will react, if at all, to don's (temporary) disappearance? we have no evidence that don himself has procured any important accounts (after all, that's not the primary job of creative director, is it? ) and as far as we know, don is not related to any other owner of the firm.
I agree, it's ridiculous to assume that a well-known ad executive could simply vanish on a business trip, without a single word, without even checking out of the hotel (which we know because of the previews for this week). Betty just endorses his paychecks and goes her merry way? the bosses just assume he's taking a little vacation? NOBODY calls the cops?! We can tell by the various time references that Don "vanished" some TWO WEEKS AGO.
No one has reported him missing??!!!
