Don identified himself as Steve Whitman not Dick Whitman.

Trust me , he said Steve. I just watched it again this morning, Will be on again Tuesday at 11:30 central time on AMC.

user-pic

He said "It's Dick Whitman."

default userpic

He said "Dick Whitman."

user-pic

Qmit: He said Dick Whitman. Quit saying this --you posted it about 8 times over on the Episode 11 Open Thread.

default userpic

I've rerun the scene many times. He says Dick. Get a hearing aid.

default userpic

I posted earlier today on the open thread for Episode 11 that I heard "Dave" Whitman, but I was tired...Still, it's interesting there's confusion about this as it seems viewers have come to expect anything when it comes to characters' identity switches!

user-pic

I listened a second time and heard "It'S Dick Whitman." The "s" came from the "it's" not from "Steve". Totally sure.

default userpic

I heard "Eloise".

default userpic

Which it often is. I have trouble hearing or understanding quite a bit of it. And when the guy who cut Peggy's hair speaks - forget it. The oonly things he said last night that I understood were, "I yam homosexual" and " I feex you."

user-pic

This is from the AMCTV.Com Episode Guide:

..Still in Palm Springs, Don makes a call and says, "Hello. It's Dick Whitman." He tells the person on the other end of the line, "I'd love to see you. Soon."

user-pic

I did not hear this at all - but, of course, I would be expecting to hear "Dick Whitman," so I could be wrong.

Did anyone else hear 'Steve" instead of "Dick"?

default userpic

I must hear the same way you do, Original Poster, because I remember last night thinking, "STEVE?"

user-pic

Use close-caption for the scene, and see what the text reads - that should clear it up for you the next time it's rerun. I use CC when the dialogue is low, too strung together or mumbled.

default userpic

I have it TIVOd, I don't need to wait til Tuesday to see it again. He says "Dick", not Steve.

Now that you've posted this on a bunch of threads, I suggest you take your meds and go to sleep.

user-pic

@zerelda. I heard: 'it's Dick Whitman' and the elision could make one hear "stick" but I never heard "Steve"!!! LOL.

Anyway, some have mentioned previously that the dialogue is difficult to hear. I'm remembering the 'smoke crack?' comments here a few wks ago when Roger said: "you smoke, Crane?"

Last night I had difficulty with Joy's comments.

default userpic

He said "Dick." The preview showed old early-50s cars at what looks like Catalina. Don has a Cali connection. We just don't know what it is yet. I mentioned before that he wanted Rachael to run away with him to California last season.

user-pic

***Michelekay. Interesting that you saw 50's cars. Maybe that last scene will turn out to a flashback.
He said Dick Whitman.

user-pic

Hi flowerpower! I'm rolling with laughter!!
I'm agree with you about Kurt's accent, a little tough to understand at times...
I hope he continues to feex Peggy!!

default userpic

Yes, I agree that the preview looks like a flashback to the early 50's.

Patricia: I think that those Euro-trash assholes think it's uncouth to discuss money, that's why she reacted that way to Don. And I'm really worried about Duck now, too. I was liking his character a lot!

user-pic

He said Dick Whitman and the captioning said the same.

I think the newbie that flamed this topic has had a lengthy run...

user-pic

What the Hey! He said Dick Whitman. Now what I'm finding curious is who knows him as an adult as Dick Whitman. Maybe he is a spy. The previews for next weeks show, shows him at a navel or army base of some sort. I couldn't hear Joy speaking clearly enough. I found it funny when Joan came into Ducks office she said" Joy must of stepped out." Ducks secretary. I think the group of gyspys are really griffters. Never staying in one place too long. They seemd to very well appionted, yet when Don mention that they must be well off, the one lady had a strange look to her face, Like H-ll No! I'm sooooo disappointed Duck started drinking again. ciao ciao

user-pic

.....Good one, flowerpower! If you hang out with people from Eastern Europe, after a while you can understand them.

I love Kurt - he's my new fave.

default userpic

Im like the rest i heard Dick Whitman clear as day. I wasn't sipping on alchol at the time so I know i wasn't tripping. I will watch this on demand tonight and clarify it once more qmit.

user-pic

@Gail Klein: maybe this will give you a laugh. When I first started going out with my NYC boyfriend from Jackson Heights/Queens, I couldn't understand WHAT he was saying, his "accent" was so thick (maybe if I'd understood him we'd never have hooked up!). Would''ve saved me a bundle of trouble (but there were some fun times, too).

user-pic

OK, I feel a song coming on:

" You say to-MA-to, I say to-MAH-to..."
"You say po-TA-to, I say po-TAH-to..."
"To-MA-to...To-MAH-to..."
"Po-TA-to...Po-TAH-to..."
"Let's call the whole thing off!"

(Oh, I heard "Dick" and was shocked)

user-pic

Maybe I should've sung that right off the bat when I met my cute NYC squeeze.....LOL

user-pic

Hi fellow Maddicts!
I rewatched the episode last night. Don did say Dick, however, it almsot sounded like Deek....
My guess was he was picking up on the accents of his house mates!!!

user-pic

It could have been a speech slur by Don. He could have been picking up the accent (LOL, 60's child) but I think it was from the "medicinal" drinks he had at the poolside. You know they introduced him to the Mickey and I don't mean Mouse - even though he WAS in California! Cheers ;o)

user-pic

P.S. I see this episode similiar to a movie I saw a few years ago called "Welcome to Whoop Whoop". The main character was a horn dog who met up with a nymphomaniac. After massive amounts of sex; she drugged him, hauled him to a compound/community in the Australian desert and kept him hostage. They would shoot anyone who tried to leave. The guy even looked like a young Don Draper....weird! Cheers ;o)

default userpic

flowerpower, you crack me up...eloise.

dick "the stick" whitman
don "the wand" draper.

default userpic

I know most all of you heard Dick, but I replayed it about 6 times in a row on demand, and I heard either "It's Steve" or "It's Dave" I tried really hard to hear "Dick," but it just wan't there. Go figure.

user-pic

Hi Drink&Smoke!
I'll have to look for that movie!
A horn dog and a nympho?! Sounds like Oscar material! Too funny!

user-pic

Perhaps Steve Whitman is a leftover from Dick Whitman's life before Dick Whitman examined the dog tags and assumed the identity of the burned-beyond-recognition Don Draper in Korea. Maybe Peggy isn't the only one with a secret "love child." Maybe that's why Don was so emphatic for Peggy to "move on" while visiting her in hospital after she gave birth to Little Pete. He may have understood her situation better than we knew. Perhaps the appearance of the well-dressed but obviously unwanted children at the pool in Palm Springs triggered something in Don to make him place a phone call to someone with whom he hasn't been in contact for a long time.

Since Don is such a player now, there's no reason he couldn't have been one - albeit on a more downscale basis - during his existence as Dick Whitman.

user-pic

This whole thread over one hard to hear scene? I hope that MM is more diligent with their sound recordings next season. I love the show, but many of the actors (Mr. Hamm especially) mumble and are very hard to hear at times (even to this 25 year old's ears). With such a pivotal scene and reveal of plot, there should be no question about what was said.

default userpic

Apparently this is a HUGE debate over nothing. I have watched the episode three times. My hearing is excellent. He said "This is DICK Whitman." If someone heard something else, then I suggest they have their hearing checked pronto, or turn up the volume on their set, or pay closer attention. He said "DICK WHITMAN." Period.

user-pic

......Did anyone else see a gun?

default userpic

i don't recall a gun.

it's possible dick was married before the korean war identity switch. he may have an abandoned wife and/or children, who would be in their early to mid-teens if born before 1950.

he dialed a long distance number on a rotary dial. based on the length of time it took the dial to go back to starting point with each number he dialed, i think the area code was 212. that's new york.

default userpic

Aw, the "gun" thread again...very funny, Dry Martini.

For those of you who don't remember, we had a similar thread about whether or not Don had a gun in the locked drawer. Many people swore that they saw the gun, others swore equally that there was no gun. So this thread about Steve vs Dick is kind of a repeat.

user-pic

@Boca: Hmmm.... I watched his fingers dial the phone and it looks to me like he dialed 444-444-4444 :)

CattyChick: There is no STEVE Whitman!

DryManhattn: That gun again!! You are too funny.

default userpic

laurie b, i bow to your superior powers of observation (seriously, she's good at it, folks...) since i watched the episode only once...but to me, the sound of the dial turning sounded different...

and once and for all, there is no STEVE!

default userpic

I just watched and I heard Steve Whitman. In fact, I found this message board by typing in "Steve Whitman Mad Men" because I wanted to know why he was calling himself Steve Whitman.
