Season 3 and The Feminine Mystique (Hopefully)
Season 2 ends in the middle of 1962. In the following year, Betty Friedan's book "The Feminine Mystique", is published. Considering how the writers like to keep the setting for this story somewhat historically accurate, I'm hoping big things are going to happen with the female characters.
With the exception of Peggy, the rest of the female characters really do have a twisted sense of self-worth. And they really are seeing being a wife and a mom as the end-all for success as a woman. It's one of the worst (although entertaining) aspects of the show. I love comparing what I see happening on this show with the women against what would happen in this day and age. For instance, in episode 205 Pete Campbell is arguing with his wife. She leaves the room and he yells "get back here!" When she came back into the room the first thing I thought was that he should run, that she was probably going to kick his butt. Instead she just sat at the table (like he told her to) and apologized for being bad. Hopefully we'll see her being less obediant in Season 3. Hopefully, none of the female characters will accept being passed over for a job they deserve. Hopefully they won't just accept being raped on the floor of an office by their fiance.
Well, the Feminine Mystique was a real sensation when it came out. Betty Friedan, whatever people thought about her later, was a true trailblazer.

To answer Evelyn's question: sorry, I don't really know. It was about 9 months between season one and two.
Nigelq: It took a while - sometimes years - for some of us older, set-in-our-ways, women to catch up to the philosophy of the Feminine Mystique. In fact I'm sure there are still some women who rejected the whole notion of men and women being completely equal.
My generation was raised with the "Cinderella" concept. You know, we were all waiting for Prince Charming, etc., etc., and then he turns out to be Prince Charmin! (lol)
We did, in those ancient times, just what was expected of us. What we were trained in school, at home and in our churches to do. Have sympathy for us please. Don't judge us with your modern, liberated eyes. Luckily for all of us it was a short, limited time line in our lives. We were only too glad to leave it all behind us when women started learning how to talk back, carry banners and make demands. Oh, and also to burn our bras.........well, some of us did. Lol. Nursing mothers shouldn't try this.
