November Mad-ness Film

"The Apartment"
"C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) has his future mapped out -- all he needs to do is cozy up to the top feeders in the corporate food chain. But his fast track to the executive suite gets short-circuited when he falls for one of the bosses' girlfriends. The Apartment features top-notch performances from Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning five, including Best Picture."--Netflix synopsis---

Join with us as we pass the months during the hiatus by stepping back and viewing Hollywood as our favorite characters saw it. Come back to the forum the last week in each month to post comments on the movies selected each month until the premiere week of Season 3! I'm in! Are you in?

We’re now going to select the movies we’ll watch as a group for the coming months. Anyone can join this group; lurkers are encouraged to overcome their shyness just long enough to say, “I’m in!” The second requirement is to vote for the movies you’d like to see. Select two from each of the three groups below. Post the message, “I’m in!” (if you haven’t already done so) along with your selections to be counted. Vote once during the week (Monday 27Oct thru Sunday 03Nov 3amEST). Votes will be counted to determine the monthly viewing schedule, choices with the highest numbers scheduled first. Keep in mind, even if your choice is not first, our plan is to watch them all. Results will be counted by me; my Westie ‘Domino’ will break any ties.

I'll publish the final list within 48hrs. Knowing I cannot please everyone, the viewing sequence will no longer be up for debate at that point. Feel free to watch the movies in any order you wish, remembering the goal in our discussions is to make note of its relevance to Mad Men and the cinematic devices used in both productions.

I'm In!
You did say to choose TWO from each group, right? Here are my choices:

The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit
The Best of Everything (both related to the business world)

Executive Suite (more business but also about the inside politics of how business is done - also features Barbara Stanwyck)
Shadow of a Doubt (about a man leading a double life and how it affects those around him)

Tony Curtis (Sweet Smell of Success)
Barbara Stanwyck (a successful woman not only in her movie roles, but as an individual who remained at the top of her game)

Should we count "The Fountainhead"?

I do love "The Apartment".

And since I haven't seen it: "La Dolce Vita" (I saw the clip that mirrors Roger riding the twin.)

user-pic

Attention everyone! Make it easy on me!...

-Select TWO from each (of THREE) groups....
-Mark the thread 'Recommended'
-Make all selections in the same post

Thanx!

Note: If you choose Alfred Hitchcock, the movie selection will be from all his films; the movie choice will be up to you; we will discuss them all.

(rozsie... I am converting your "Shadow of a Doubt" vote to Alfred Hitchcock, okay?)

....Oh, my gosh, greytone, don't be mad at me for going off-topic or whatever, but La Notte is not on the list....

Wouldn't that be one of the first things, since it seems to have influenced Don Draper enough that he played hookie from work to go see it? (Or am I being some kind of dunce here?)

I have always wondered if anything he did after seeing that was inspired by the movie....

Sorry for interrupting - this is so very organized and professional, and I really appreciate all your hard work.

user-pic

Thanks Greytone, I'm in. An activity for the off months!

From Section I - The Best of Everything and The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit (isn't this what Jimmy Barrett called Don Draper?)

From Section II - Manchurian Candidate and North By Northwest (one of my all time favorites, did the MM wardrobe person use Cary Grant as inspiration for Don?)

From Section III - Not really to sure here. I'd say Tony Curtis (loved him in The Great Impostor) and Marilyn Monroe

user-pic

Dry....
This was discussed on the first thread. LaNotte is not listed because Weiner has informed us that LaNotte is NOT the movie Don was watching. He refuses to divulge the name of the small obscure French film because he didn't get the rights to show it.

.....greytone....Oh...mysterious! If I had time I would research the answer. Is that from that great interview? I have to finish that....

Better get to pondering the vote - choosing just two is hard!

user-pic

Yep, I'm in!

1st GROUP:
- The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit
- BUtterfield 8

2nd GROUP:
- La Dolce Vita
- Alfred Hitchcock

3rd GROUP:

Anyone still wanting to vote can still do so! Balloting stays open until 3am (EST) Sunday!

Thanx to everyone who voted early....
Has anyone watched or re-watched "The Apartment" yet?...

default userpic

I'm in!

The Best of Everything
BUtterfield 8

The Manchurian Candidate
Revolutionary Road

Rita Hayworth (especially "Gilda")
Barbara Stanwyck (especially "Christmas in Connecticut")

But why didn't you include in Related Films "Lover Come Back" with Rock Hudson and Doris Day. It was about the advertising business in NYC and was made in '61 or '62.

user-pic

greytone,
I have the DVD of "The Apartment" on loan from my local library. First saw it in 1960, then on DVD a year or so ago, so it will be like revisiting an old friend.

user-pic

Thanx for the reminder, Remembering...
I'll take a trip to my library to see what they have, too. Great idea...

default userpic

I'm In!

Group 1
Rope
Gone With the Wind

Group 2
La Dolce Vita
The Sound and the Fury

Group 3
Marilyn Monroe
Loretta Young

BTW - this thread is VERY DIFFICULT to find. Can you move it to the top of the lists - close to where the Mad Men book club is? It would get a lot more attention. And maybe then you could extend the voting for a week.

Great idea!

user-pic

Thanx to all movie enthusiasts who stopped their busy lives to vote on our future schedule of movies!

Your votes have been tabulated and our final schedule will be posted later today as a separate thread.

..........................................This Thread is Officially 'Closed'.....................................................

Jamblermm...I have no way to move threads...only our moderator does....but it is important that our group mark the thread 'Recommended' so that it is available on the right side of the screen during the month. (Only six of twelve voters actually completed this request...) It is important to be able to find the thread, so it is critical that everyone do this. I sure hope more people remember in the future! Thanx for the heads up..
