Movie Mad-ness

Hi Fellow Maddicts:
The final episode for Season 2 is coming up, and the loooong wait 'til Season 3 will be easier if you join in our second 'during-the-break' activity: Mad Men Movie watching.

Our plan is to watch some of the movies mentioned by Mad Men characters during either season.
The first movie (November) will be "The Apartment," starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine (1960). We will watch a new movie every 3-4 weeks, and discuss the movie during the final week of each month. The only thing you need to do is watch the movie during the month, then meet us back here to make your comments about the movie and its tie-in to Mad Men. It should be fun! We'll need to add enough movies to fill the next 10 months (at least).

What other movies can you remember were mentioned in the series? Can we think of nine more? Help! If you're in, post a message here and suggest another movie for our watch list!

......Thanks! I'm in....sounds like fun.

user-pic

I'm in.

Pete mentioned "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" to Peggy in an episode this season.

I believe "Spartacus" was mentioned last year.

Don watched a foreign film early this season, "La Notte", The Night - that might be good, but then I love foreign films. Mastroianni was in it along with Jeanne Moreau. Two huge stars in their day.

This will be fun.

user-pic

I have checked, and all the movies mentioned thus far are available via Netflix:

November '08- The Apartment

Candidates for Future Screenings:
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Spartacus
La Notte
La Dolce Vita
Rope

Voting on future months movies will begin when we have a list 10-12 movies. Are there any more?
Thanx, everyone!...

user-pic

Bless you for this thread! What a fantastic idea!

La Notte, Deserto Rosso--Weiner and his staff clearly glean influence from Antonioni's films.

La Dolce Vita is also a fun choice that ties in to many of the themes in MM. I think of Bobbie Barrett's character and how she is very much like Magdalena, Anouk Aimee's character in the first part of that film....

The Best of Everything should be part of the list. The set of MM takes a huge page from the office set in this one. It's fun to compare.

user-pic

"Exodus" I think it was still in the making, I remember someone mentioning Paul Newman staring in it.

When we run out of movies, maybe we could add TV shows that were shown on MM.

user-pic

It's not even in theaters yet but, "Revolutionary Road."

user-pic

Aaarghh! "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

Hardly a full-length film but: "High Flight"

user-pic

Greytone, I am not sure what year it was filmed, but there was a movie made from the book, "Ship of Fools." Might not qualify, I guess, if you only want movies referenced by MM characters. Never mind.

user-pic

Very nice idea greytone! Movies mentioned either in books, conversation, appearance on tv in the series:

The Best of Everything (1959)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
BUtterfield 8 (1960)
Exodus (1960)

FOR THE ERA MOVIES:
To Kill a Mockingbird (1960)

Can-Can (1960)

Sweet Bird of Youth (1962)
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man (1962)
Lolita (1962)

user-pic

Okay....which should I add to our list?

Exodus (book was mentioned)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (on tv)
Revolutionary Road (not released yet on DVD)

Come on all movie buffs! Weren't there more movies than these mentioned in Season 1 and 2? In the posts people were always mentioning one film or another? Didn't they mention The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit?

user-pic

I love "Splendor in the Grass"...one of my favorites.

What about "The Misfits" from 1961? It was Marilyn Monroe's final completed film and well worth the watch.

And also, ""Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) seems appropriate...there are many similarities between the main character and Don (fighting in a war, identity crisis, issues with personal allegiences...not to mention gorgeous!).

user-pic

jamm54...
Help me, ...were the films you listed all mentioned during the show? We certainly want to put those at the top of the list, then we can add some which are just for enrichment or enjoyment. Will you be joining us?
TrudyIsAnnoying, Ritt, zerelda, 60's child....Are you joining us?

Yaaay!

user-pic

Mine I don't think were mentioned, but Marilyn Monroe's death was, and I thought Misfits was appropriate.

And I'm definately in. I'm a huge film buff, so any opportunity to talk movies is alright with me.

default userpic

Oooh count me in too. I don't know if anyone suggested this yet but "How to succeed in business without really trying" apparently it was Robert Morse's first movie. Also 'Cape Fear" and "Man in the gray flannel suit"

user-pic

This list will be revised one more time; nominations will be added through this weekend (midnight-Sunday 26Oct).
As soon as we feel the lists are complete, I will ask everyone to pick two films from each list. The viewing schedule will be set by ranking highest to lowest vote-getters. Sound good?

Thanks for posting all the era films jamm...
We'll probably refer to the list as we go along. This thing can go on forever, can't it? We will add films through this weekend and vote next week (Monday 27Oct thru Sunday 03Nov).

Weren't there homages to a few Hitchcock films? Where are those film nominations?

default userpic

oooh, fun! I'd love to do this...definitely "man in the gray flannel suit", great pick!
starting with flix that have been mentioned in MM is a great idea -
as another pick, not on MM, how about "sex and the single girl"?

thanks so much for suggesting this!

default userpic

another thought, is that several stars were mentioned -

rita hayworth ["an alimony that would support rita hayworth"]
barbara stanwyck ["you look like a young barbara stanwyck"]
tony curtis ["I just saw tony curtis in the men's room"]
marilyn monroe [whole ep!]
loretta young ["did you watch loretta young last night?]

and probably more...
might be fun to have a little post movie hashing, star hashing.....

user-pic

Be mindful, these films will be in demand in the regional areas where you live, so rent early to lessen the crunch! HeeHee...Netflix and Blockbuster-type rental companies are gonna wonder what is going on!...

Discussion threads will be posted the final full week of the month. Shall we ask Clayton to post our thread for us so that floats at the top of the threads for one week?

I'm excited...
good idea hagan...I've started a new list of the stars' names mentioned..

default userpic

yay!!!

user-pic

....I just cannot wrap my brain around this whole "ten month" thing. Am I the only one in denial about this?

default userpic

The film Don was watching in the theater (during the same episode when he mentions La Notte) is Last Year in Marienbad. The shot was so brief, I had to go back & look at it again to make sure (& then ask a fellow obsessive).

While How to Succeed... (not Morse's 1st film, but probably his most commercially successful one) was made in 1967, it was pretty faithful to the original play, which opened in 1962 - so I'd say it would be essential viewing for a Mad Men film fest.

For the 2nd rung of films (no direct mention in show), I'd suggest Executive Suite - it's a little early (1954), but I think has the same office culture as MM. (And it's got Barbara Stanwyck!)

Sounds like fun - wish I were there.

user-pic

....Guy Smiley.....Love the icon!

user-pic

I had the same thought about including How to Success in Business Without Really Trying - I think that should definitely be in.

Just a thought - Butterfield 8 was a really awful movie. Elizabeth Taylor got an Oscar for it because her husband Mike Todd had just been killed in a plane crash a short time before. But, even she hated it. We could skip that one in the discussion. Or not, whatever people want to do. Laurence Harvey was in it with her.

Another thought - what about The Manchurian Candidate - the original one? It was filmed in 1962, I think, but after JFK's assassination in 1963, Frank Sinatra bought the rights to it so it wouldn't be released at that time. It has nothing to do with advertising per se, but sets the stage for some of the paranoia of the Cold War of that time.

user-pic

.....greytone....Sorry for the off-topic, but have you noticed that each thread has tags, which means someone has been reading and tagging all of these.

My guess is that it has been in place all along for the purpose of re-organization later. I'm not sure they realized this forum would be so busy!

I noticed some forums with cute little call-out balloons, which is very easy on the eyes, but still it's great to be able to skim all the comments as a group since many posts are related to some other post.

Whatever. That's about as intelligent as I can be on that right now!

Sorry - please continue with the movie talk.

user-pic

stony brook...
I read an interview where Weiner stated the french film Draper was watching was on none of the films the messageboards put forward. He said it is actually an obscure french film; he refuses to provide the name because they didn't get the rights to show it.

Interesting, huh?...I know...threw me for a loop...

"How to Succeed..." is already on our list.

The tags have always been there, Dry...we just can't figure out how to use them. I concluded they work perfectly for whomever at AMC wants to pull reports based on what we are saying on certain topics. And, I'm ready for the speculation to end on this season. The last 4 weeks on this board have been exhausting!

chopin47....
I'm all for watching the bad with the good, aren't you? We can pick it apart and try to see what excited the population of the day about the characters and/or actors. And, you can certainly watch a different 'related' film for extra credit. Deal? I'm glad to warned me not to expect too much. :)

user-pic

There's a gem of a movie with Barbara Stanwyck called "Baby Face". It was made in 1933 and has been shown on TCM several times. The reason I mention it is relative to the comment "...you look like a young Barbara Stanwyck". From the TCM site: "Baby Face" (1933) (available here in both the prerelease version and the theatrical version) stars Barbara Stanwyck as an amoral, greedy gal who sleeps her way up the corporate ladder in a New York bank, not caring who gets hurt.
It's availabe in a collection called Forbidden Hollywood Collection.

You can read more on IMDB http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0023775/
to see if you think it relates to this project.

I'm not looking forward to the last episode of MM (too sad), but think this idea that Greytone came up with will help tide us over until MM #3

default userpic

What also might be interesting is to name the books or stage plays mentioned in the series when we run out of movies. Just a thought.

user-pic

Greytone, no problem - I'll watch Butterfield 8 again.

Rubadon, I like that idea - especially since "Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" was mentioned at least twice this season - I know they made a movie out of it, I think Zero Mostel was in it. It was Sondheim's first Broadway hit.

user-pic

Love this idea. I don't know if anyone wants to sit through 4 hours of "Gone With The Wind" that Betty mentioned to Sally when she was begging to go riding with her mother. It could be on the list, I guess. I have seen it sooooooo many times, I have it memorized I think. It might be good for discussion, whatever everyone thinks.....

user-pic

Hey, jamm! When are you going to start using Doris Day for your avatar? I read you're thinking about it... Mine (Sandra Dee/"Gidget") is still out in Cali getting ready to teach Don surfing...and whatever else comes to mind! (or maybe he will teach her----Whooopeee!) Hope she doesn't return to the boards with a little "souvenier" like she got in "A Summer Place"-----from her beach shack rendezvous with Troy Donahue!!

user-pic

@greytone: Matthew Weiner has mentioned that the opening credits of MadMen were designed as a homage to Hitchcock's "North By Northwest", "Vertigo" and "Psycho". Also, I believe all the train sounds/visuals, appearances are again a homage to many of Hitchcock's train sequences in his movies: North By Northwest, Strangers on a Train, The Lady Vanishes, Shadow of a Doubt.

FOR THE ERA films I listed were not mentioned in the series, but it's quite interesting to see the variety of political, musical, and "adult" themes from the selection, don't you think?

Sorry for the late response, was at the track today wagering on the Breeder's Cup races running at Santa Anita (remote off-site betting).

user-pic

@SCfan: maybe next year if I come back. It'd have to be picture of her as "Calamity Jane" (one of my favorites) since my name is Jan (close enough).

user-pic

Ritt....
What is High Flight? I couldn't find it. Can you tell us more about it?

user-pic

Sandra Dee's back! (big whoop) "Gidget" has decided to stay in Cali and marry Moondoggie since Don is going back to NYC.

default userpic

No flames please - but a great movie released in March 1963, which has a great, if cavity-inducing sweet, story is "The Courtship of Eddie's Father." Most people remember the TV show, with Bill Bixby, but the movie with Glenn Ford, Shirley Jones, and Ronny Howard has some Mad Men looks at times. Lots of drinking and dressing up out on the town in New York. Plus, Jerry Van Dyke is hilarious.

Another way to look at this is through movies that are set in 1962 - "American Graffiti ("Where were you in '62?") and "Animal House." It's amazing how different 1962 looks through Weiner's lens.

user-pic

......John Galt....Why would anyone flame you for that? I really hope that's not an indication as to the condition of this forum right now....

Actually, this is probably sappy, but I loved that series when I was little.

It really addressed the whole single-parent and also "latch-key" kid thing, which is completely traumatic, with a huge "ripple effect," especially if you felt like the only kid in school in that boat.

Someone on here posted something really poignant about that recently.

Fact is, "Eddie" was pretty lucky to have "Mrs. Livingston" in his life.

I've seen the majority of these films already (prob. 75%) but not that one.

Thanks, and I think it's quite a good suggestion.

user-pic

I believe that "Gentleman's Agreement" was mentioned in an episode.

user-pic

.....Should Days of Wine and Roses be on here?

Just for the alcoholic element.... were there any smoking movies? Ha!

user-pic

DM....
Was it alluded to or mentioned? Those two criteria are the parameters for our list. ...so little time, right?.
-*-
Thank you everyone for making all the suggestions. I have continued to add to our voting list, and will post everything for voting early Monday morning. (Trying to miss the season finale rush.)
Anyone voting must be a club member. How do you become a member? Tell us, "I'm in!" or "Me, too!" to have your vote counted.

Back to waiting for the season finale...{{Peggy's going to finally speak about what happened to her baby!}}

user-pic

greytone, "I'm in!" "Me, too!" Glad I came upon this thread before voting begins.

How far into the 60s are you going with the films? For "notable 60s films not mentioned on MM," how about including,
"A Hard Day's Night" (1964)
"Bonnie and Clyde" (1967)
"The Graduate" (1967)

Thanks for setting this up, greytone. It should be lots of fun.

user-pic

.....greytone.....Thank you for doing all this, and so professionally too. Lord, I hope I have time to do all this fun stuff!

Now you have me curious where you are getting your advanced info!

user-pic

Remembering...
jamm54 created a movies from the era group, and I'll add your suggestions to that. Thanx!

One of the angry rants brought something to light. What if the forum is dismantled? I, for one, plan to go forward with my movie watching alone. If this happens, there may not be any warning, so think about what you (individually) plan to do. If we need to re-register, I will return having watched as many of these movies as I can. I thank you all for contributing.

I also have discovered a DVD exists that has Charleton Heston as Peer Gynt. Shall we add it to our 'alluded to' list?

default userpic

Well, I'm edging out again, just a little bit, but if we are going to watch movies BETWEEN seasons, then I guess 1963-1964 movies will be OK since we'll probably pick up next fall in late '63 or early '64.

So here's another pick: "On the Beach" with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner. A little hokey at times, but some interesting moral dilemmas. Kinda goes along with what Don was thinking about during the ICBM presentation in Episode 11 and what's getting ready to happen with the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. As someone alluded to earlier, the crisis might be featured tonight and the threat of Armaggedon might make Don realize how important family can be, especially since's he's been reborn.

"Thirteen Days," a recent movie about the crisis with Kevin Costner, isn't bad either.

user-pic

Greytone, since you called for movie buffs, I'll throw in my hat on a few:

1. North by Northwest (1959): We kill a few birds here -- Hitchcock, advertising (Cary Grant was an 'mad man' in the film, mistaken identity. We could always go with Psycho, which is much more about 'double identities' -- Hitchcock used mirrors/reflections remarkably in that one.

2. Splendor in the Grass (1961): Great call, Trudyisannoying. This has to be the most heartbreaking 'teenagers in love' story I've ever seen. Still gets me; and Warren Beatty and Natalie Wood were a beautiful couple.

3. Lolita (1962): Kubrick seems to influence a lot of Mad Men's visual style. Not a great adaptation of Nabokov, but a really good movie on its own.

4. Manchurian Candidate (1962): Great political movie; the 'Raymond Shaw' has a bit of Don Draper in him.

5. Sweet Smell of Success (1957): One of the great 'New York 1950s' movies. Very sleek like MM, but with a cynical and dark heart.

default userpic

I scanned all the posts, I didn't see it...HOW could we have missed...

1963....IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD.

If there's a comedy in the mix, that's got to be included if only for the title. Gotta love Jim Backus fixing and drinking Old Fashioneds while he's piloting a plane.

user-pic

.....Maybe the voting should take place now, so if it does go down, at least we'll all be looking at the same 10 movies, or however many it was going to be..... just a thought...

user-pic

Remembering...
This began as a way to watch the movies mentioned my the MM characters during the break betweenn Seasons 2 and 3. As you see, we have a list long enough to last until noone participates any longer. Everyone should print a hardcopy of the list in case the forum dissolves or reorganizes.

Dry...
I'm all over the web reading published editorials about Mad Men. I read that tidbit about Peggy's baby this morning. The article noted how fitting it was that last season's finale was about the baby, and this season's finale will resolve 'the baby' issue. I don't believe Weiner's production staff has any leaks. (Quite unusual.) They do give advance episodes to television critics, and quite often, each critic reveals a different tidbit. This particular journalist had seen the finale. I'm excited!

Sorry to be Off Topic (OT) my fellow movie-watchers....

default userpic

hi there all....
dismantle these boards?!? yikes! I was just getting to like it here!

hopefully, they'll let us get our two [or more] cents in after tonights ep, before doing anything rash...

greytone, can I ask where you found all the 'tidbits'? I'd like to look them up...
thanks!

user-pic

I just finished watching one of the earlier episodes from OnDemand and they mention the movie
"Horatio Hornblower" in it. I think Gregory Peck is in it. Add to the list?

user-pic

wasthere...
Does it relate to MM in any way, or is it just one of your favorites?

user-pic

Greytone: Someone in MadMen was watching it on TV, 3 episodes ago.

user-pic

Great! I have added it, wasthere...
The list is getting longer!

I'll be posting the final list in a few hours on a separate thread. Think about your selections and get ready to post your choices next week!

default userpic

FYI .... The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit will be airing on AMC, Tues, Nov 18.

Though it would be nice to get most of these movies from the home court, I doubt AMC will shift their schedule to indulge us (one move could be a separate Mad Men Channel - all MM, all the time!). Lately, I've seen the majority of these movies on TMC.

default userpic

Also in November on AMC:

LOVER COME BACK (1961) - Nov 14

I've never seen it, but the first few lines of the summary stood out for obvious reasons.

** Although not as well known as Pillow Talk (1959), this romantic-comedy pairing of stars Rock Hudson and Doris Day earned an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay. Hudson stars as Jerry Webster, a Madison Avenue advertising executive who has achieved success not through hard work or intelligence but by wining and dining his big-shot clients, even setting them up on dates with attractive girls. ** (more on AMC-Movies)

user-pic

I love the Rock Hudson/Doris Day romantic comedies. They're silly, but enjoyable! And Tony Randall is a scream in all of them as Rock Hudson's sidekick.

user-pic

Thanx, Sharon.....
Great information!
Are you joining us? Please say yes. You seem to be a fan of movies...like us!

Yeah, jamm, love the Rock/Doris movies...plus, loved loved loved her in "Please Don't Eat The Daisies" She was so hilarious and cute trying to deal with those 4 little brats of hers...(I only raised one and he was plenty, let me tell you) and her dealing with 4! Loved the part where she was rushing trying to get dressed to meet David Niven in NYC for dinner and the older 3 were watching her/jumping on the bed and laughing at her trying to get her dress on after "losing 5 lbs."...she finally worked it up and asked one of them to zip her side zipper up...the way she shrieked as he did it in one rough upward motion..."you just took off another 5 pounds of dear old mother" ...classic. I just love her movies!
