Money Matter$

Will the merger solve Roger's money problems and catapult Sterling Cooper to the upper echelons of advertising firms?

Roger mentioned that as a Junior Partner, Don is up to recieve over $500K. Is this money a lump sum sweetener, or the result of his percentage of ownership? If so, would it be logical to guess the other three partners lump sums would be bigger than his?

Roger also said they were offered $22.50 per share annually for the next 10 years. What do these terms translate into in 1962 dollars and cents?

Alice told Bert he was old and ill. Will he have enough to support himself and his medical care? He certainly will not live another 10 years, will he?

I keep asking because I wanted to understand how much money is involved before deciding whether Bert will continue to look out for Roger (to fulfill his mother's deathbed wish) or make himself the prioity in deciding to sign the papers or not?

Any answers or projections?

Did I miss that? Bert's dying mother asked him to look after Roger?

I though tI heard Bert say that the late Mrs. Cooper - I assumed that was Bert's dead wife - had introduced Roger to Mona.

I have never seen Roger do much work there anyway.

Okay....I've rationalized a few things....
The $22.50 per share is what the partners will be paid when stock is issued. Currently, Sterling Cooper is privately owned, so there is are no stockholders. The money they will receive depends on the total number of stock they receive for their percentage of the partnership when Putnam, Powell & Lowe makes the purchase.

If Don has 12.5%, the other three partners hold 87.5%. Now when determining the relationship of Don's bonus to the others' bonuses, I told myself:
12.5 is to $500K as 87.5 is to 'X.' The other three partners should split at little over $2M. Is that right?
Is that enough to make the offer what they termed 'generous?'

Where is my calculator? What is that in 2008 dollars?

Sorry flowerpower...
You're right...I meant to say the late Mrs. Bert....

The other thing I dont understand is they are only selling 51%?

I dont like the payout over 10 years idea.

Hopefully Berts counter-offer was more to their (SC partners) liking. All money upfront with first right of refusal should the Brits sell their 51% in the future.

$22.50 in 1962 equates to around $140-$150 today.
also don's $500000 equates to about $3 1/2 million today.

......Another great thread - this is funny - I started reading this going, "Now THAT's what I'm TALKIN' about!" and then saw greytone's name, and went, "But of course!!"

More great reading.....

Yikes! I am never going to get out of this room!!!

Could anyone make out the amount of the check that Betty was endorsing at the beginning of Episode 12? I paused the DVR, backe it up, reran slowly, paused again and I believe the amount was $957.75. Surely some one out there besides me is curious as to what Dan's paycheck looked like.

Greytone-at last! There IS a reason to learn Algebra; you CAN use it in real life. I'm always telling that to students but I only half believed it until now.

user-pic

You're right, Hapynzap...they are only selling 51%!

Now I'm stuck....brb

flowerpower....
LOL...You're laughing at me sounding it out like my favorite 8th grade teacher (Mrs McCullough) taught me....lol

I know Weiner worked this out already. It's the kind of producer he is. Help me out here Clayton!...lol

Only 51% is a *controling* interest so even if ALL the SC principals are on board for something, if the Brits don't want to do whatever, it doesn't fly.

Wrong. A private company can have stock and Don, Roger, Bert & Alice are the shareholders in Sterling Cooper. The shares are privately held, thus not traded on a public exchange.

If Bert is smart the building isn't included in the deal.

Nokomis,FL...
So, do we know if SC has issued stock? And, should I assume all three are equal shareholders?

samg...
Thanx for the dollar value update.

Hapynzap...
Your counteroffer sounds better positioning for SC...I hope YodaBert is smart and uses your suggestion in his counter offer...

Thanx to all for your input...

Okay...
Ta tada da da da DAAAA!

According to my menial scribbles and rudimentary algebra logic using my dusty slide rule (remember those?) I have calculated what Bert, Roger and Alice would recieve (IF all three are equal partners, IF the three hold all the remaining outstanding 87.5% of stock). Each would be looking at pocketing approximately $7.7M in 2008 dollars (abt $3.5M 1962). [PLEASE do not place bet$ based on this calculation...I'm a old lady doing 1960s algebra to the best of my ability...lol]

Would you take it if you were Roger? or Bert? What conditions would you add? Would you consider shopping your company around to a higher bidder?

Do they really know how dramatically the company organization would change? Could Roger work for Duck? Could Bert retire to stare at his cows and his Rothko?

They couldn't possibly answer all those questions in one episode! Could they?

user-pic

Great questions, greytone! My burning question is this....will they give Duck the boot when they find out he is back to hitting the sauce? Duck sure seems to get thing done when the he's got his bottoms-up vision goggles on. Cheers! ;o)

user-pic

Hi Drink&Smoke!
Duck does seem to function better with his "bottoms-up vision goggles" on!!! LOL!

Hi greytone!
All of this calculating is making my brain hurt!!

user-pic

Hi there 60's child!. ;o) Isn't it going to be fun watching the shift in power at SC? I can hardly wait to see who is going to be who's boss!! Thanks Duck for shaking things up at SC!! Cheers! ;o)
