Jon Hamm on SNL

Thread to discuss Jon's hopefully successful role on SNL. It will be different for me personally to see him in such a setting. On Mad Men, he's mainly serious, then on interviews he's really laid back. However, by the promos, this should be an awesome SNL. We'll see how it goes (especially those on the east coast)

Suggested sketch: Stirling Cooper pitches an ad campaign for John McCain: "For Those Who Think Old"

And Don sleeps with Sarah Palin.

(FYI: I'm not necessarily slamming McCain-Palin. This is just too tempting a takeoff.)

Kristen Wiig as Joan - Amy Poehler as Peggy - Seth Meyers as Pete - Andy Samberg as Fr. Gil.

user-pic

.....Oh, boo! The East Coast is already viewing.....(...jealous...)

Amy Poehler is never not funny, even at the very droll Emmy dog-and-pony show this year...

And Don Rickles could give both Jimmy Barrett and Roger Sterling a run for their money.

He was in perfect form!

default userpic

ok - he rocked in the opening monologue

user-pic

HELP! Is anyone else having trouble with their reception on NBC? All my other channels were okay but NBC was horrible, cutting in and out!!!

default userpic

Won't give away anything - but some great cameos.

user-pic

Bwahaha!

That was a good one: "...it's suspending reality..."

default userpic

So far so good! The intro, the sex offender, and a Mad Men parody with Pegs and Roger... PRICELESS! Loved the dramatic pitch by Don =D

Loving it!!

default userpic

Wonder how many NYC Maddicts are in the audience

user-pic

If they were fortunate enough to get tickets. Are they still pretty tough to get?

default userpic

Don Draper's Guide to Picking up Women...the BEST.
Thought the MM scene was great except for the clients - especially Kristin's character. But "Silver Fox" and "Bangs" were great. Fun take on Sal.

user-pic

Now all my channels are not working -- it's an area problem!!!!

Does anyone know if I can get this On Demand so that I can watch it in its entirety?

default userpic

I remember somewone writing in an ewarlier post that they knew someone at SNL and was trying to get tickets - we'll see you comes back with any great stories

default userpic

Wasthere - you'll be able to see some selected scenes on SNL's site thru NBC.com

user-pic

Wasthere -- also try youtube.com!

default userpic

Sorry about my errant "w's" in my earlier post-

user-pic

.....wasthere....How awful! I am positive it will be On Demand soon, if not almost immediately.

All you guys in New York - WAHHH!

default userpic

He was great - funny, versatile, smart, self-effacing (Jon Hamm's John Ham). Shows how wonderful his acting is. Always love how he distinguishes Don from Dick and it was so great to watch it in the last epi.

Vote for Finger and/or Deldeaux (sp) for City Council of the of Butts!

default userpic

CORRECTED: Vote for Finger and/or Deldeaux (sp) for City Council of the city of Butts!

default userpic

...you need a Finger in Butts

default userpic

Don Draper's Guide to Picking up Women was the perfect sketch for him. It was in character and it was funny.

user-pic

I am always amazed at the number of facial expressions Jon is able to produce! And I thought his British accent was fabulous! He is an amazing actor and, apparently, a nice guy.

user-pic

JH did great....I am so happy for all his success. did anyone notice those wide bottom jeans he was wearing at the show sign off!!!! Go 'head Jon... you b stylin'!

user-pic

He did a wonderful job, nailed James Masons' accent. The Jon Hamm's john ham bit was great. Am already sorry that the season ends tomorrow night.

default userpic

His James Mason was dead-on. Does he have a comedy background? His timing was great. Lots of times actors doing that show bomb or come off stiff; he should definitely host again.

user-pic

Loved the "DD Guide for Picking Up Women" and "James Mason"! Our Jon is versatile...those "portrait pics" of him in between commercials were adorable as well.

Wasn't it great that "Roger" and "Peggy" showed up to help their bud out? I know John was in NYC on Regis just yesterday and Elisabeth is in "Speed the Plow" on Broadway, but it was still nice they showed up.

Overall it was a great---I, too, thought his timing was great, dd.

user-pic

I thought Jon Hamm did great. I did not care for the John Ham or the butts skits. It was juvenile humor, trying too hard to be funny. But I guess Jon Hamm signed on to do what SNL wrote for him. Too bad SNL didn't have some of the excellent Mad Men writers. It was nice to see Elizabeth Moss in 1980's clothes at the end.

user-pic

Oops, I meant Elizabeth Moss in 2008 style!

user-pic

Hi fellow Maddicts!
It was pretty pitiful that I had to "nap" to be able to stay up through the whole SNL show!!

It was worth it! Elizabeth Moss and John Slattery's cameos were a great suprise in the MM parody skit. "Pete"'s character was even a twit in that scene, and the guy who played "Sal"... what can I say!! The best part was "Joan"'s exit from the office!!
You had to be a true Maddict to understand the humor in "Don"'s pitch!

I loved the political ads with Jon Hamm! Butts, NY...I think I may have lived there once! LOL! Gee, I wonder if it's too late to do a write in vote...Jon Hamm for President!!

The Jon Hamm/John Ham TP roll was totally stupid, but totally SNL!

"Don Draper's" tips on picking up women was the funniest thing on the show for me!!

I thought Jon Hamm's personality came through, he is humble, sweet, and has a great sense of humor. Even his monologue was good. He was making fun of MM and AMC (as he pointed out...Not A&E), in a light hearted way.

My 24 year old son watched with me, he isn't a Maddict, but he got most of the skits because I'm always talking about MM.
Thanks to him, I came out of my musical "time warp" and really enjoyed the group "Cold Play". I thought they sounded a little like U2 (one of my all time favorites)!!

Anyway, that's my 2cents...can't wait for tonight!!

user-pic

P.S. His James Mason was great too! I remember the movie "Lolita".

user-pic

"Don Draper's Guide to Picking Up Women"

http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/don-drapers-guide/787241/

he was great cute hunky loved him

I know some people must think I am a man because of my handle but I am a woman

and chose the handle Cad Men because one minute I love the men and then with the way women are treated I think they are cads

user-pic

It's been a long time since I've been able to stay awake to watch the entire SNL show.No way I was going to miss Jon Hamm's comedic debut.
I loved the DD Guide to picking up women. It was spot on! The skit with Elizaberth and John was funny, but I thought it would of been better if the SNL characters had better lines,Kirsten's character the client was lame.
@SoFla Kate. Your idea for a skit is good.Too bad
you wern't writing some of the skits.

default userpic

He was great. I loved the Don Draper's Guide for Picking Up Women segment. I watched it again this morning to see if I still found it funny, I enjoyed it just as much. I also enjoyed the "Roger" and "Peggy" appearances. It has to be tough to navigate all the attention and hype that goes along with a "break-out" role. I wish Jon all the best and hope that he'll continue to stick with Mad Men versus jumping ship for "the next thing." I hope that the decision makers at the AMC network, as well as the actors on the show, will remember the many, many television classics that took a few seasons to build their audience only to achieve that "classic" status. The fact that each character on the show is the target of so much discussion- both favorable and critical opinion- says that the core audience is committed. This isn't the first show that had to build an audience of it's core base...

user-pic

Jon was great! Considering how bad the writing is over at SNL, he got some pretty decent skits. I knew Slattery would show up after his Regis stint. I agree w/the above that his timing was really spot on and his expressions & accent perfect. Anybody know where he's staying? I'm heading over to the city for brunch today, I will have my eyes peeled! He is amazing!

user-pic

Jon Hamm is master of the universe. He totally nailed it on SNL. He was charming, cool, pleasant and in command of his lines. I loved the hula hoop sales pitch with Don's esoteric message and the background music from "The Wheel" episode. It was a delight to see Roger and Peggy. I think John Slattery is capable of guest hosting too. Don Draper's Guide to Picking Up Women was great. Maybe Hamm's appearance will boost MM ratings.

default userpic

Was asleep when SNL aired. Woke up about half-way through. My son had taped it for me and would not allow me to watch the ending until I could watch the entire tape. It was great!!! Jon Hamm totally nailed it. Did not care for the clients' skit, but SNL pulled it off. Jon Hamm is the Master of the Monologue. Great to see John Slattery and Elizabeth Moss. Give 5 stars to Don Draper's Guide to Picking up Women*****11 hours to go until the finale. Can hardly wait.

default userpic

I thought Jon Hamm did an excellent job last night. Don Draper's Guide to Picking Up Women could have been an inside joke, instead because of Hamm's delivery and how it was written, it was funny even to a non MM fan.

Loved the Hula Hoop pitch ! Only way it could have been better was if at the end Peggy would have said- "Wow- I need to find my Relaxaciser."

Wonderfull cameos from Elizabeth Moss and John Slattery. Elizabeth is starring on Broadway in "Speed the Plow" and I believe John lives in NY (and just appeared on Regis at the end of the previous week).

Hamm's impersonation of James Mason was spot on. Not only the accent, but the pitch of his voice. You could tell he was having fun.

I hope the season finale tonight is seen by a record audience.

user-pic

I hated the Mad Men sketch but only because I hate the "Two Assholes" bit that is always awful. I did enjoy Joan "I'm leaving - wanna watch?"

"Don Draper's Guide tio Picking Up Women was perfect

Great monologue

I want posters of the Jon Hamm photos they showed as they came in from commercials. Stunning!

user-pic

I also liked his JFK impression - it was quick but very good. It made me appreciate Jon Hamm a lot more. I've only seen him on MM and really have no idea what he's like. Seeing the real person makes me appreciate their acting job. He really is phenomenal as DW/DD. I enjoyed the Mad Men skit and was thrilled with the cameos. I thought his pitch for the hula hoop with straps was hilarious, especially because Harry left in tears!

I really laughed at the Jon Hamm's John Ham. Stupid, sophmoric bathroom humor gets me every time. He pulled it off brilliantly, though. The Finger in Butts was pretty darn funny, too. I wonder if that's the HQ of Schwetty Balls.

I am so looking forward to tonight, but equally as sad that this will be it until July. At least I won't be so tired on Mondays.

default userpic

I usually watch SNL for the guest hosts that I like, not for the SNL players, who are not that good, compared to the classic SNL of te 70's, 80's. Even then, sometimes the skits written for the hosts are so bad that the host has a tough time trying to make it believealbe, or just read the monitor over someone's shoulder. That said, I have to say that Jon Hamm's hosting job just so exceptionalbe and he is a brilliant actor. The James Mason accent was perfect and in all of his skits, he played the parts with great timing, comedy and even his "blocking" was superb. I'll bet the cast and producers were honored to work with him. This actor is going to become super famous soon, but I still want him to stay with MM.
Look at Ashton Kucher - he stayed with his starter show even after he has become a super celeb.

user-pic

I found it refreshing to see the humerous side of Jon. SNL always seems to throw in a skit that is stupid , but I think he pulled it off with alot of fun. My fav is the Don Draper guide to picking up women. Loved it when Slattery walked into the skit in the conference roomand looking over there was Peggy. She needed more lines. OMG yes NamcystowOh Schwetty Balls has always been one of my favorite skits, that and the Dick in the box. I look forward to seeing that at Christmas time in the best of SNL. The last episodeof MM for a long time. It went by so fast. How could that be Martha? In the mean time don't forget to vote for Pat Finger to represent Butts NY.

user-pic

Hi NancyStoweOH!
The "Schwetty balls" skit with Alec Baldwin!!! I swear, everytime I see that I lave my ass off!!
Thanks for reminding me!!

I know this is a Jon Hamm post, but did any other SNL fans see the return of Will Ferrell as "W" this week?
A classic!! Almost as good as his "Axis of Evil" skit!!

user-pic

P.S. lave? I was trying to say laugh!

user-pic

Wouldn't it be ironic if somehow they feature the Kennedy assasination in tonight's season finale, seeing as Jon Hamm portrayed JFK last night on SNL...

user-pic

In the mean time don't forget to vote for Pat Finger to represent Butts NY.

I agree: There is nothing like one with experience as a Finger in Butts. Nothing would move you more than moving a Finger to be in Butts.

A Finger in Butts is a time honored position. Mr. Finger comes from a long line of Fingers. There is nothing like a Finger with experience.

The first time I watched my tape of SNL at 0400 my time today, I only baked up an hour, so I thought and actual AMC commercial for MM was a comedy bit, and that the show started with DD's Guide to picking up women. Fortunately after reading here about Joan leaving, I looked again for the entire show.

Although I was active in the advertising industry long before 1960, I so love the effort and attention put into the MM creative process I have refrained from picking nits. Silently I knew in those days before CGI finished comps took days and the PlayTex comp was not possible so soon. Therefore I loved the SNL bit in which their "Sal" called them on having finished presentation a hour later.
JH proved himself a great comic, far better than Jimmy Bartlet. Having Elisabeth Moss and John Slattery at the presentation table was such a bonus.
EM has been an NYC based perfomer for years, as has JS. She is currently in a play and he just opened in one.
How cunning of AMC to buy more than one commercial for MM on SNL. That should take care of the concerns JH expressed in his monologue, which sounded more like Matthew Weiner than the SNL staff.

default userpic

I wish Jon Hamm would run for President!! what woman would NOT vote for him?? ( where did he say Butts was??)lol. I must admitt, I was not comfortable with him doing comedy. He didnt do half bad. For all those great host of SNL ( john goodmen) they usually are in multiple skits. the more "unfunny" actors, arent in alot. It seemed like Coldplay was on more than Jon. ( not a fan of Coldplay.... U2 wannabe's) His picking up women skit was perfect... seriously ladies...... what would he HAVE to do wrong not to pick us up???!! Love ya fellow fans:)

user-pic

I wasn't thrilled with the shameless plugging of MM in the monologue. But after that....wow! Loved Don's Guie To....and The Jon Hamm's John Ham was hysterical. Quite the talented man my Don...I mean Jon! ;)

The other thing that made the "Finger in Butts" skit so funny was the whole "finger in Bobbie" scene.

Speaking of which, I don't watch SNL regularly so I wasn't familiar with the 2 a-holes so I didn't really get it. It would've been so much funnier (to us, at least) if they had been Jimmy and Bobbie Barrett. Don't you agree?

user-pic

I thought the Don Draper Guide to Picking Up Women was hilarious!! The other skits were okay, but this one will go down as my SNL favorite. Maybe it was because the last tip ol' Don gave was to "Drink and Smoke" constantly. LOL Cheers to SNL and their sense of humor! ;o)

user-pic

LOVES him. Nice work and I love that they brought a few of the cast in for the skit.

user-pic

Oh, great - there IS a thread for people who LIKED Jon on SNL!

Loved Jon in all his skits. I was very impressed with his versatility and the great energy he brought to the skits (mostly different from dour Don). I thought he was the best host that SNL has had this season. The guide to picking up woman was especially fabulous and so funny. I hope it drums up more viewers for MM. :)

default userpic

Wow, who knew Jon Hamm could do such a bang-on impersonation of James Mason?!? And I too loved the "Don Draper Guide to Picking Up Women" (or whatever the title was)....

He was great, though could've done without the potty humor sketches.

I LOVED when Elizabeth Moss replied, when asked the time, "I'm a woman. I'm not allowed to wear a watch."

Har!

user-pic

.....I felt bad Jon and the others didn't have better writing to work with, but he was great and the whole thing worked pretty well for that reason.

user-pic

I loved his DD picking up women guide. And Jon really did well as James Mason - dead on! Better than the guy imitating Vincent Price.

default userpic

I think was such a funny episode. Jon did an amazing job on the show. The skits were very funny.
