Jon "1"dimensional acting Hamm

Jon Hamm was LOUSY, but I loved the political skits. Truth be told.... he ain't even that good looking! He definitely needs lighting (nose). but he has good hair, and a sexy masculine voice. I knew Don Draper would show-up on the show (SNL) because Hamm has nothing else in his repertoire.

The show itself was lousy. I don't blame Jon. I blame the writers. Too much with Jon as Don Draper. They could have been more creative in writing skits to show the breadth of his acting skills. But that's SNL for you. It just isn't funny.

The takeoff on MM (even with John Slattery and Elisabeth Moss showing up) was terrible! Not funny at all - I was very disappointed. Jon and John looked embarrassed to be there.

Even "Don Draper's Guide to Picking Up Women" was not as funny as it could have been in the hands of better writers. SNL is funnier when they stick to political humor. This was lousy, I agree with pattypoo.

I thought the show was very enjoyable and the still photos of Jon Hamm shown during the commercial breaks were stunning. It's the first time in years (decades) that SNL was good all the way through. Chocolate Cherry, you're entitled to your opinions, but why do you waste your time watching and blogging about a show and person you obviously don't care for, just move on. Life is too short.

user-pic

Eh, it is what it is. SNL is a shadow of its former self except for politics, and not even then (though Tina Fey rocks!)

Missy: I think I am allowed to watch SNL regardless, along with MILLIONS of other viewers (especially this year.) It's ok too if I don't happen to think that the sun rises, and sets in the crack of Jon Hamms ass, Even if you and others happen to think that it does. I'd bet money, Hamm has been pursuing a carreer in Hollywood for years... and he himself can't believe this whirlwind of luck. Now in my opinion is he a great actor? No. Is he the most beautiful man that I ever laid eyes on? No. However he has a look, and a charisma that works for MM nothing more/less. On a personal note: I am guessing, but by the time an actor has reach the place in their career where you ( joe public) are able to watch him/her on a weekly TV program, I'm sure that they have been critiqued by everyone including the janitor, and they are well aware of their stregnths and weaknesses. Example: When a man tells an average looking woman she is beautiful, she loves the compliment, but knows that she really isn't. When a man tells a beautiful woman that she is beautiful, she loves the compliment, but she knew it before he said anything, and would have wondered what his problem was if he hadn't mentioned it.

I am really shocked at how many of you did not enjoy this weeks SNL. I thought it was great! I'm hoping if any good comes of Jon Hamm's apperance....it will be more viewership for Mad Men. I hardly think he's the cats meow, but I can't imagine anyone else playing Don Draper. PS..Coldplay was pretty awesome as well!!

default userpic

My favorite skit was the Don Draper guide to getting women? (If that was the title) I was really surprised at Jon Hamm's great impression of the British actor. That was a surprise. The MM sketch was a total waste of Elizabeth Moss and John Slattery's time. Poor Elizabeth sat there being ignored.
I have to agree with what most people are saying. SNL is in dire need of some new talent and writers. The only time they are funny is with the presidential canadiates impersonations. All of the funny talented people have moved on. And so will their audience once the election is over.

Chocolate, Like I said, you're entitled to your opinion, but why do you keep coming back to this forum to complain. You have a history of dislike for the show and Jon Hamm. It just seems like you could do something better with your time if you dislike MM so much. As far a SNL goes, I thought JH had a great JFK impression and the James Mason bit was hilarious.

default userpic

I thought Jon Hamm did well on SNL. It was great that Elizabeth Moss (Peggy) and John Slattery were on as well. I was home cheering for ya, Elizabeth Moss if you read this...you did well, too! I thought Jon Hamm's John Ham was hilarious...it showed great acting to eat that ham off the TP rolling pin. LOL!

SNL always stunk - has not been the same since it's Belushi days. As for it's recent ascent it is def because of the election - their ratings ALWAYS go up in an election year. The public needs comic relief from all the other political BS (like the fact that Palin gave them the highest ratings in 14 YEARS - whether you are for her or against her she pulls them in - bigger rock star than THE ONE!)

As for last night it seemed like one big infomercial for MAD MEN - I liked it. And for whoever said Jon Hamm is not that good looking - go get a thicker set of eyeglasses tomorrow. That guy is devastaingly handsome and hot!

user-pic

Hi chocolatecherry!
I respectfully disagree with your opinions about Jon Hamm.
I think he is extremely handsome (not a girly boy). And I think one of his best qualities is his ability to make fun of himself and his Don/Dick character.
Just my humble opinion, but, isn't that what makes the world great? We can all agree ti disagree!

user-pic

CC - We are all entitled to an opinion and the freedom to voice it. Your post, however, makes me wonder why you bother to watch JH/MM when you are apparently unimpressed. As missy posted: life IS too short.

So let's hear it CC: in your opinion - if not Jon Hamm - who is a good looking - good actor??

ABSOLUTELY 60'schild!....Now I will tell you a little something about myself: I went back to college in in 2001 and graduated in 2004, I was much older then many of the students, since I graduated from high school in 1974. College today is such a wonderful experience, especially since young people today are very comfortable being outside "the group" unlike the 70's, when everyone wanted to fit in, and be a part of a group. It was so refreshing to witness, and be a part of today's college scene, since my perspective of school was of the 60's & 70's. Now with that said, If you read these threads, many of them have a 60's 70's feel because of the "group" mentality. Reading them feels sooo like high school in the 70"s especially the Main Threads. Its hysterical how these "OLD GRANOLAS" found each other, and can pick-up where they left off 30-odd years ago. A case study in itself....

Missy : what about your time? everyone gets the message that you like Jon Hamm......and? So?.... why are you spending your day sayng it over, and over, and over, and over, I read somewhere that he has a girlfriend/or wife, so I doubt very seriously he'll be showing up at the door! (with rope) lol... so get off my back! And please dont make me call you a b----h

default userpic

I come to the blog because I enjoy the show as well as Jon Hamm and the rest of the cast. I was in college in the 70's and found it to be different then you. People did not need to be part of "the group" in my experience. It was a time when people did their own thing and were open to new experiences and ideas. I've taken tons of classes since and don't find students attitudes have changed all that much. I'm sorry if I offended you, it just seems like you have been unhappy with the show and I wondered why you like to spend time on this blog if you find the show so disappointing.

Mary Jane: I've always said: "if I'd drop dead today, the world would owe me nothing."So what do you feel I owe you?....I didnt think so

Missy.....if you are walking down the street one day, and come up on a fight between me, and the biggest GRIZZLEY BEAR you have ever seen in your life......honey, HELP THE BEAR! cause I dont need it.

CC – Civil discourse is almost always engaging, however, your negativity and inarticulate responses sap energy and intellect. Rest assured this is the last time I respond to your posts.

user-pic

Chocolate Cherry, for a supposedly educated person, you are a bore - an incredibly angry bore. You have added nothing to this forum but hate and ugliness in your rage filled rants. Please find some other place to spew your wrath - like the sewer, perhaps. Don't bother to respond as I will no longer read anything with your name attached to it.

user-pic

I thought SNL was okay. The MM skit was okay. Elizabeth Moss didn't have enough to say, John Slattery didn't seem comfortable, Jon Hamm seemed to be enjoying himself. I did like the Sal and Harry characters; Pete seemed like the real Pete - an @ss. I did like the Don Draper guide to picking up women. And the Jon Hamm's John Ham was really funny, I thought. And I liked seeing JH in his regular look - without a lot of makeup and hair gel. He looked really good. Oh, I thought he did a good job with the british accent. But SNL skits go on just way too long. It's like the writers don't know how to wrap things up. Weekend Update was horrible with 3 "guests." I FF'd through most of that.

default userpic

I liked the part in the SNL skit about Mad Men where Don gives one of his obtuse "pitches" to impess a client. It was a pretty accurate satire on the real thing.

default userpic

You know what? I'm gonna say what I think, and could care less what some dried -up, post menopausal sallow-looking hag, has to say about it. If you don't care for my opinions dont respond, because thats what an "intelligent" person would do,Maybe you should take just take a moment from drooling over Jon Hamm, and notice that nice well kept beer belly gentleman sitting in the recliner. Lets get one thing understood. Jon Hamm is okay, he's definetly nothing to write home about, and if you think he is....well, thats your business. I'm gonna give my true opinion, and if you dont like it.... I have a job for you..... it involves your lips and my ass.

user-pic

>Jon Hamm was LOUSY, but I loved the political skits.

If you think that deadly opener was an example of good political satire, then I feel safe in continuing to admire Hamm as an actor.

chocolatecherry, I am 51 and having to be a freshman again because my prior hours are null now. ( I did not graduate before)

I still like thinking about the old days. Is that a problem? I am not baiting you, I am curious. I hear some of the 18-25 year old crowd talking about the show, but they are more interested on what is on ABC on Sunday nights, and I understand that. Almost all of us watch Gossip Girl for the same reason, we love the clothes. I was surprised that they were not more interested in the story line of GG.

P.S. I will be rooting for Joan tonight. Hope she gets even.

ZERACULA : Where you are is the sewer...thought you knew that!.... Lets get real: We're here with the rest of the losers.... Winners don't have time for this crap!.... PULHEEEZE don't try and get GRAND!

57chevy: No...but the "good old days" held different things for different people.Women, Minorities, Gays, Religious, ect. Everyone was oppressed..... except for white men. I was a child in the early 60's, and what I can remember most about the time is that everything had its place.

Wow, thought this was about MM...didn't know it was a big fat b--ch fest...some of you people are ANGRY...go take a walk and cool off and if you don't like MM, then get on a Dancing With The Stars blog....

default userpic

I can't speak for anyone else but there is no anger here. Not over a G.D. TV show. These people are crazy! Not liking MM is not the real issue... The issue is having an opinion that isn't kissing a-- and sucking-up to the other posters. That never has been, or will ever be my M.O. If I like something, I like it! and if I don't, I don't..... Some B----es opinion will never change that fact.

default userpic

I read a review of the show saying people don't know enough about the real Jon Hamm to know to write any other skits, maybe true. I saw him in an older movie with his girlfriend, Ira and Abby I think was the name, he didn't have a big part but it took a minute to recognize him. He was thinner and had long straight brown hair, he was cute

user-pic

I respectfully disagree with those who didn't like SNL on Saturday or JH's acting. I thought he was the best host they've had so far this season and I was impressed with him in all the skits. I thoroughly enjoyed the MM-themed skits, and I'm glad that SNL was willing to do those skits despite the fact that MM doesn't have that many viewers. Loved Jon and am an even bigger fan now!

It is true, however, that SNL has gone down hill. They need better writers (losing Tina Fey did not help) and some fresh faces in the cast. I did enjoy most of this Saturday's show, though.

default userpic

I would prop my eyelids up through Lawrence Welk or even Meet the Press if Jon Hamm was on it.

As for his acting - Marilyn Monroe was laughable as an actress and you can name a list ten miles long of people who became megastars on whatever "Charisma" or "Sex appeal" are. There is a world of difference between a comedic, light skit actor and a dramatic actor, as well.

I have to attend some of the most tortuous boring meetings in the entire world and now I just replay MM in my head and get through it somehow.

default userpic

is it me?

user-pic

Taking the chance that one or more of you will jump all over me or take this personally...my opinion: Mad Men is a great show with a great cast. Hamm is great in the part of Don Draper, but anyone who thinks it's not the writers/creators who makes MM what it is is nuts. It's what actors SAY, not how they LOOK! It's not The Hills, after all.

default userpic

CC I know why you spend your time on this blog and other things you "hate". You have no friends and nothing else to do. That superiority complex has chased away anyone who ever loved you and that bad attitude turned off anyone who ever wanted to meet you. Take a look at yourself - inside out. We who LOVE Mad Men and don't profess to know it all and are continually awed and amazed don't want you peeing on our parage.

default userpic

LOL !..... okay.......lol.....do you mean oatmeal??...never met anyone who ate "PORRIDGE" you're the first!

cah, bah, paah-rage, cute!

1. Duck;s Dog meant "parade"
2. SNL needs some writers
3. Jon Hamm is a convincing actor.
4. Jon Hamm is not bad on the eyes.
5. Jon Hamm makes Mad Men my favorite.
6. Who else could play Don Draper?

I am in my own world when I blog.
