I believe my dad used to call that an Irish fishing sweater. I think you can order that pattern from a knit shop.
It is a classic style.

If you are a member of ravelry.com (a free knit and crochet community), Debbie Bliss and other designers have free patterns there as well. Or just Google "free pattern aran sweater." On Ireland's Aran Islands each family had their own pattern for these sweaters. That way, they could identify a body when it washed up on shore. ick.

Vogue used to have and probably still does have Knitwear pattern books and there is usually a traditional Aran pattern in them. The best ones seem to be the ones with a lot of popcorn stitches on them. My mother could knit and sweaters like those take a skilled knitter and a ton of patience. Best of luck.

You know, Randall, that's a great observation. The winter Vogue Knitting mags always have beautiful sweaters in them, and they generally cover a wide skill range. Another option is Interweave Knits magazine, although you'd probably find an easier pattern in Vogue Knitting. You can find both those mags at Hobby Lobby/Wal-Mart/your local yarn store/etc.
