Duck's Detonation

Well, Duck blew it again, this time not only for the Brits but for himself. As if Duck hasn't racked up enought losses on the toteboard, he actually managed to self immolate with no assistance from anyone! Will Duck be selling insurance or working at a liquor store next season.......

After that performance in the boardroom, it wasn't hard to imagine why Duck Phillips self-destructed in England.

yes.. he is his own worst enemy.. maybe that's him we see plunging down in the opening scene

I think Duck will not be seen again in Season 3. He'll be fired from SC, and maybe commit suicide.

Too bad, because Mark Moses is a great actor, and Duck's character added a lot to the show (as a foil to Don).

Maybe he'll swipe the .22 from Pete's office. After all, he was willing to swipe booze from the one guy's office.

The one statement Duck made that I thought was incredibly ignorant and short-sighted was about selling advertising space in television and other media and discounting the creative/client side.

That made Bert sit up and comment "I don't hear the word client". Reserving/scheduling media space buys is like selling classified advertising. No creativity is involved, you're just being a scheduler at that point. If the agency is then competing with newspapers' own adverting reps or television's advertising reps, why wouldn't the client cut the middle-man out, the agency? Other than having an agency create your ad, you don't need them to schedule a newspaper ad or commercial. Advertising reps from those three mediums (newspapers, television and radio) can be contacted for scheduling from your own company, rather than an agency. That's why stressing the necessity of creative's benefit to the client, and keeping that personal relationship going is paramount to an advertising agency. Surprised that Duck would discount it as insignificant to the whole client-agency relationship.

What sets an advertising agency apart from just being a scheduler/buyer of media space IS their creative department.

A few episodes ago, when Duck hatched his plan on the fly in the bar while with his old London chaps, I turned to my wife and said, "Don will never go for this...and he doesn't have a contract to hold him..." I was quite giddy when Duck tried to trap Don and Don flipped the script and walked out. Nothing like $500k and all the leverage in the world!

Yes, it was fun to see Duck hoisted on his own petard, I will say that!

I hope Duck isn't eliminated. I think we need him to get on Don's nerve. He certainly brings a little excitement to the office. I mean he is the only one who doesn't 100% agree with Don. Let him stay. I find it interesting every time he puts his foot in his mouth.

I personally find Duck an unsympathetic character. But they have added some dimension to Pete, so maybe they can do the same for Duck. I hope he gets taken down a few pegs or "hoised on his own petard" (love that one!).
