Dr. Greg showed he's the "Mountin' King"

I've been thinking a lot about Joan. Without Roger in bed with her, her power at SC has seriously declined. I think she actually loved/loves Roger and is heartbroken to seem him actually leave his wife for JANE when he would never do it for her. He offered and she always told him no, and maybe now she regrets it (?). She had a chance to move beyond the ranks of secretary and was not appreciated, even though she did a fantastic job. (Poor Harry having to stare at an orangutan!)

I noticed last night, as I watched it for the 3rd time, that while Dr. Greg was showing her who was boss that there was the subtle sound effect of a train whistle. Wow.

I agree that if Roger leaves his wife for anybody, it should be Joan, not Jane. I'm not sure from your post whether Roger ever offered marriage to Joan or not, and I can't remember. I remember a hotel bedroom scene where it seemed like they were kind of "joking" around about the subject, and as I recall, I thought Joan was talking like she wasn't ready to "settle down," --but maybe she was talking like that because Roger never presented an offer in a serious way?

P.S. Nancy: very clever pun.

nancy stowe OH: I thought the same thing yesterday about the doc..."mounting king" and had to laugh. I really feel bad for Joan.. I love her character and hate to see her like this. She'll bounce back, though, once she bounces that monumental a-hole out of her life. And I think it's highly possible that Peggy will end up "promoting" Joan. I hope so.

.......You know what's weird?

To me the one who is humiliated is Dr. Blondie. He's a coward, and a cripple in bed and apparently has a severe mental disorder as well. He seems VERY damaged to me, the way he just casually mentions the dinner reservations after brutally raping Joan.

Joan should just LAUGH in his face, and toss in a little name-calling to boot. It would be fun if, in the next episode, Joan crashes him over the head with a lamp or something. Where's a Trudy "scream-fest" when you need one!!

I hope Joan rises above this and sees it for what it is. I loved whoever said the comment about Joan and Peggy kind of teaming up and helping each other, professionally. That would be awesome.

All too often (in fact, pretty much always), women are at each others' throats in the workplace, so that would be something to see.

Hi Glamara! I thought you fell off the planet!

I think the larger point the creators of this show are trying to make is that times are a-changing, and that the way for a woman to get power is by occupying the office rather than the bed of the guy in the office.

That was the whole point of the juxaposition in the last episode of Joan sitting at the secretary's desk and Peggy moving into the office next door.

If "Mad Men" can be reduced to one thematic thread (and being a rich canvas it can't), it's the changing relations between men and women illustrating how the US changed in the 60s.

.....David......Good one!

......by occupying the office, rather than the bed of the guy in the office....

You're a wordsmith.

Did you see how LOW Joan was sitting? That desk and chair looked like they were made for Lilliputians! I know that was intentional.

Joan has never looked so small, and Peggy has never really been shot from below like that, looking so tall.

Watched it again last night and I counted 4 or 5 times Joan said NO to Dr. Rape. However, I didn't see much of a physical struggle. Joan is not a small girl. She could have maybe kicked him in the stethoscope or something. I do think she had been through this type of scenario before. That kind of submission is a learned response.
