Don's Call
Whom did Don call and want to meet with while in California? Whom could it be????????

I'm in CA - hope it's me!!
I think Don/Dick called the lady at his job selling cars. Someone mentioned it might be the original "Don Draper's" wife, mother, sister, how about sister-in-law, daughter? Does she have a hold on him like blackmail like Don/Dick thought Adam did? Could this be the same person he sent the book to? One never can tell...
.......I wonder if he is calling that old army buddy of Dick Whitman's - the one Draper ran into on the train in Season One.....
He does say: "Love to see you." That sounds more like he's talking to a woman. Would he say that to the IBM guy he met on the train?
I hope it's not the woman from the car dealer where he was selling cars. It's too obvious. Besides, she was there to see Don Draper and calls him out that he isn't Don Draper. As someone else has pointed out on another thread, why would he maintain a relationship with her? It's possible, but I'm hoping it's someone who's always known him as Dick Whitman and never knew about this Don Draper character. It might at least fill in some of the blanks about his past, before Korea.
I think it's someone we haven't met yet, maybe from the Army, who knows his identity as Dick Whitman, not Don Draper.
Hey Flowerpower- that was a good post! Cracked me up! Anyway, I guess we are all sitting at our computers all over the world wondering, "Now who could he be calling and identifying himself as Dick Whitman to..." What's really funny is that for all the ideas that each of us keep hypothesizing, those very clever MM writers and cast probably have something in store for us that will throw us another curve ball and will be totally unexpected. I remember reading somewhere that either Jon Hamm or Matt Weiner said that the closing episodes of season 2 will bring some things together. I hope I'm not just making that up or it being wishful thinking. What I am quite sure of is that these folks are so precise that nothing they put in is without reason. One of the things I love about MM is that it is so layered and nuanced that each moment is really a piece of cinematic art. I remember Jon Hamm saying that what he loves about the show is that they are taking the time to build the story's narrative. They treat us like we are intelligent and don't have to have everything fit together and be answered at the end of 60 minutes.
I agree with Mephis about Jon Hamm and Weiner saying that the last two episodes in season 2 will bring some things together, and also not leave anyone who is fan of any of the character's disapointed.
Thanks, Memphisflash. Yes, it's a novelty being treated as intelligent viewers. I'm really liking it. But at least half of the show's subtleties would go straight over my head if not for others on this blog. I can't wait to get here after the show and find out all the stuff I missed!
I think he called an old flame that we haven't met yet. I think it'll be someone he was in love with when he was young (in his 20's during the late 40's maybe). I think they were in love but her family didn't approve of the relationship (cuz he was from a poor family) and she ultimately moved away with her family to California (which, back then, would've been a million miles away). He's always kept track of her but never contacted her. Now he's finally able to see her again because he's in town and he's older, more successful, sophisticated, etc.
I think he's start to lead a double life with this woman, travelling back-n-forth to the west coast on "business".
