I am not sure when double ring wedding ceremonies became the norm.

Don's background is hardworking backbreaking physical labor. No farmer who valued his hands would dare to wear jewelry when working w/ dangerous machinery . Growing up in the depression era, I doubt if he saw many husbands who had the luxury of owning jewelry.

In season 1, I don't see that wearing a wedding ring or not would have been even a slight hinderence to Don's affairs. He chose women who were not shopping for a MRS and mite feel that he was advertising that he was not on the market.
