Don or Dick?

Does anyone have a speculation to share about who we will see emerge? Is Dick Whitman going to be done with Donald Draper or will we continue to witness struggle between the two (more double life)?

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave….. as it pertains to Don Draper.

I think that the real Dick Whitman has allowed the false reality of the role of Don Draper to insulate himself from full emotional ownership of the relationships in his life. (Most notably as a husband which is perhaps the hardest "role" of all to play.)

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave….. The prisoners in the cave can only see the shadows of objects projected on the wall in front of them. The shadows, not the objects themselves, are their only realities. Even once freed they don’t recognize true realities because they contradict the false realities created for them. When the prisoner thinks he is talking about a book, he is really talking about a shadow of a book. But he uses the word “book.” When the prisoner is released, he can turn his head and see the real objects. Only then, perhaps, he can realize his error.

Don Draper created realities beleiving them to be shadows. Knowing that he created shadows where realitities should exist is maybe why he became detached and drifted away. Dick Whitman needs to get Don Draper to turn his head and face those realities. Hopefully thats what happened in his "baptism" in the sea

The early Don Draper took ownership of some of Dick's responsibilities. Just look at how sincerely and generously he looked after Anna. But Dick Whitman has been playing Don Draper for so long he has lost touch with Dick Whitman. Anna says that he is lonely only because he believes he is alone. The reality is that his kids need him, his wife needs him and the staff at Sterling Cooper needs him.

Let’s hope that Don Draper comes back, but acts more like the real Dick Whitman who seems to know the difference between shadows and reality. I am hoping that’s what Don Draper does on Sunday.

p.s. I also posted this on the episode 12 open thread among 624 other fan comments also equally worth reading.

Isn't "Don" planning to go back to NY? Why did he tell those car guys that he needed a job? If Don is losing it and is going to just fall off the face of the earth, that ruins the show for me. I want him back in NY, with SC, and dealing with Betty...
