Don and Betts
Do you think they will reconcile?
Do you want them to?

They will reconcile, and I want them to,,,, but not sure how smooth it will be for those two, they definately will not split. Don loves the children and they adore their dad. Betty is such a cold fish [so far], hopefully she will come around! I don't think she would be showing such depression and anger if she did not love and want Don back.... I can't see her accepting losing him. Plus she has shown a few brief glimpses of being a warm loving woman, Don and Betty could be a really 'steamy' pasionate couple 'if only'....
Yes, if only. I cannot help remembering the looks on their faces on Valentine's Day when Don is waiting for her and looks up and sees her walking down the hotel stairs towards him. They both seemed totally in love with one another. He certainly did, and she was basking in it. I also remember when he was looking at the family pictures he used in the Wheel episode. I know when he was talking to Roger about the separation he said he was feeling relieved, but I think he is only enjoying a respite from the lies to Betty. I think he would like to get back to her and the children, but he does not know how to do it without having to admit the truth. He has lied and covered up for so long, he doesn't know how to tell the truth or how to admit to lying without losing face.
Not until he comes clean.
Just considering the time and social pressures, I think they'll reconcile. I only hope Don remains a slut despite the marriage because he's fun as a bad boy in a gray flannel suit! Like I've said, some happy-ass family values crap I can watch on "Father Knows Best" re-runs. And that's NOT why I tune into Mad Men!
Viva Don the Ho!
They'll get back together because it will provide more twists and turns for the story line. Divorce was such a scandal back then and Betty's not going to want to subject herself to that.
Several posters on here think Don and Betty are in love and destined to be together. Unless Don goes under a mental metamorphosis he'll still be living his lie and not being true with Betty. If he told her everything, from the beginning with his true identity I think she'd freak out. She only knows about Bobbie,if she knew about the countless others he's been with she might want to reconsider her future with him.I think she did mention it in one of her sessions w/ Dr.Wayne.
When Don goes back home he'll have to toe the line and I hope that he doesn't walk around with his tail between his legs for too long. Don's more fun to watch when he's behaving badly. As Betty has said in the past,he can't help himself.
I'd like to see him slinking around with a new woman or two.
I'd love to see Betty meet a man who she could have a fling with. And not some unsexy girly man like the stable guy Arthur. If Betty could hook up with another Alpha male who is as good looking as Don,well, there would be some conflict there. As much as Don cheats on Betty,he sure keeps he under his watchful possessive eye. It would be fun to watch Don fighting for Betty'd love and attention with a worthy advisory.
I agree with Damaged Woman. I want them to get back together, but they need to fully develope to be happy like they were in the photos shown in the wheel.
@MM4ever: Thank goodness I'm not the only one lovin' Don being bad! I cringed the first episodes of this season with him acting all "good hubby!" WTF? Hell to the naw! His lying, cheating and whoring around makes for damn good TV!
If I had my wish, Don would have a few more steamy flings before any reconciliation! That's just me selfishly wanting to watch the man shirtless, in satin sheets, and showing some leg! Rowr!
Goodness, I really hope so. For some reason I am so drawn to this couple even though the writers have given us plenty of reasons to turn away from them. I see a lot of parallels between both characters but because they're both so complex and hidden we don't see it right away. To me they represent the theme of Mad Men which is nothing is ever as it seems.
But do I think they'll reconcile? For a while, yes. But I think Don has to actually lose Betty and the kids and try to move on before he could ever really become invested in this family. It is obvious that Betty loves Don, it's obvious that Don wants things to work with Betty, but for some reason they can't communicate that to each other...let alone anyone else.
I can see Betty letting him back in because she has nothing else to turn to and then eventually getting on with her own life and cutting Don loose for continuing to sleep around (cause we all know he's not going to stop). I can see this as being the beginning of Feminist Betty or something. lol
Anyways, I don't want to get into too much of an argument because I KNOW that there are many Betty-haters and therefore Betty/Don haters on this board. I'll just leave by saying that I want them to get back together, but I think their characters need to fully develop first before they can ever truly be happy with each other.
I think they will get back together out of convenience but it will be half assed and wont last. I don't think they had marriage counselors back in those days so much like they do now and when they did it would be your local church pastor or assistant. The Drapers show no signs of being religious so there goes that.
Plus they need sex therapist counseling especially for Betty, heh
I would like to see Betty have a very sexy, romantic, guilt free fling before she and Don get back together, if they do. Don certainly owes her a fling or two! He can keep flinging himself until he gets himself straighten out, if he wants - certainly makes the show more interesting - I agree with Visan on that! But, Betty really should be with someone - she doesn't have to love them, just be really attracted and treated right by them - maybe she could learn a few things that will convince Don she can be a mother in the kitchen and a good time girl in the bedroom - then he won't feel he's missing anything when he does come home! C'mon, Betty, life is too short - get out there and live a little - but, not with that toad, Arthur - he's got Pete written all over him!
zerelda -
Betty doesn't want somebody like Arthur for a fling She wants a guy like the experienced, earthy mechanic who saw through her little game and let her play it anyway. She could go to his garage with the balance of what she owed. They chat and he calls her on mindless chatter, saying put up or shut up, crowding her into a corner. She can decide she owed him some interest... Hair-pulling, back-clawing interest. :-)
Don never finds out and she feels they're balanced the scales.
I am new to "Mad Men". I've heard so many people talking about how good it is that I rented the 1st season just to catch up. I love it. I think Jon Hamm, January Jones and Elizabeth Moss are 3 of the most talented actors out there today. January Jones is perfect for the role of the depressed housewife. It's a good thing Don is so good looking or it would be very hard to like him. It's annoying that he has the most beautiful wife at home and cheats with other women who can't even hold a candle to Betty. I think the chemistry between Don and Betty is excellent and I hope that they do get back together. I think Betty needs to start standing up for herself (and maybe even have an affair) to get Don's attention. I think (and hope) that these other women are "just because he can" and that deep down he really loves Betty. But she may need to give him a good taste of his own medicine before he realizes how much he really does love her and comes home to his family, I don't like him with Bobbie; didn't like him with Rachel either. Betty is definitely for him. Hopefully the writers will see that.
Visan I know me and you hardly agree, but I honestly agree with you on that. I think Don will havea few more flings before him and Betty truly get back together. My guessing is that the last fling Don will have, will make him think what the hell am I doing, and he will come to realize he had it good with Betty. But I do agree with you on that, his filngs arent over yet.
I've read on various sites many a male poster (they claim to be male) thinking all three of Don's side ladies were "sexy." And explained what it was that made each woman--Rachel, Midge and Bobbie--hot! Betty maybe the "classic" beauty but she didn't have the "earthiness" that the other 3 had! Plus, some men just like darker hair!
I'm not one for that lovey dovey crap between Betty and Don because, well, that gets old and lame damn fast! I couldn't care less if Betty had a fling of her own, but Don must remain a man-tramp! That's one reason I loved season one. He was a sexy stud, and couldn't keep it in his pants! Fabulous!
I love Visan's comment! I hope Don remains a slut too..that's what makes him irresistible...
Ritt: I don't think Betty got the mechanic's business card, but maybe the postman? ( He could ring twice to make sure Carla is out with the kids).
Hee hee.
Seriously, though, I wonder if they will reconcile this season (doubt it). Don needs to see that his "moving forward" kinda philosophy lacks soul. Maybe he needs to scrape bottom before he finds one.
For the sake of keeping the audience interested, Don will continue to be a slut. I hope so. I want to be introduced to more intriguing, independent, tell-it-like- it- is women. I know I live for meeting women like that. They are inspirational. Betty has never been able to do that. I don't hate her for it, and without her in the mix, it wouldn't be as nearly interesting.
Don "finding his soul" is the last thing I want to see! The man already has mucho soul because he certainly gives a shit about his kids and is a good friend, despite Roger betraying him.
Don is a fun, exciting slut and needs to find a new bed partner, who's independent, smart and sexy! Man-whores are fantastic TV!
I don't tune into Mad Men to watch some corny re-hash of the Cosby Show, complete with ol' man sweater vests! No! I want to see the drunk who pissed himself before a big meeting and the brazen young secretary, using her cleavage to keep her job!
I too am drawn to this couple and hope they reconcile. I also hope we see some jealousy on Don's part. He does need to squirm a little.
What's always "killed" me about Not-So-Old Betty confronting Don was how she would only point out how "old" Bobbie Barrett was! I mean, shouldn't Not-So-Old Betty be pissed that her hubby stepped out on her in general? And that he endangered their family? And he might have brought her home "the clap?" The levels of shallowness that character displays is wackadoo and annoying as hell!
Hi Visan! I'm gonna start an old fashioned protest "Sit in" in front of my TV if they don't bring Rachel back...and soon!!
Somehow, I don't think it will be too effective, but, I'll try...
She is too good for him, but she can turn him around, and help him find peace.
60's child, I disagree about Rachel. She is a spoiled little daddy's girl who was handed the family business on a silver spoon. She never had to work for anything. She is not Don's type. He has had to work hard and struggle his whole life. I think he would get tired of her. At least Betty worked as a model and had to deal with rejection in the work place. What kind of rejection would you have to deal with if your daddy owns the business? Don's character is annoying to me sometimes when he sleeps around too much. I don't care how long it takes, but I think in the end he should realize that he made a commitment to Betty and had children with her and he and Betty should try to work things out.
@60's Child: I'll probably join your "sit-in" because this season's Rachel-lessness has not sat well with me! Her clarity and moxie to call Don (and anybody else) on his bullshit last season provided a balance of female personalities on the show. The writers giving us a glimpse of her and that charming but not-Don-Draper-handsome hubby and throwing in oblique references to her, like the Menken's bag of shirts, has been pure torture for this viewer!!
@Tangfl: I respectfully disagree about Rachel. She was an heiress but she was no ol' skool Paris Hilton! She worked hard at Menken's, perhaps too hard. It wasn't just the great hair and Chanel suits that drew Don to her, IMO. As I've written before, power is an aphrodisiac to Don. And some beautiful, stylish woman such as Rachel had him "sprung" from the "geddy up!"
Damn I miss the scintillating chemistry between Don and Rachel!! *boo hoo!*
Sunday has finally arrived.Thank God,I am getting ready for my weekly fix of MM. Some things I'd like to see before the season concludes:
Don nailing another woman,at least one before he has to go back home
I think he will be home, back with Betty but it will be tense and it might not happen till Season 3.In the meantime,I would like to see Don at his finest....his hand up a skirt or between the sheets with another dark haired lady.
More stories of Pete being diabolical and Peggy getting more assertive.Maybe Peggy figuring out how to put Pete in a compromising position.
Roger getting his comeuppence.Mona gives him a long drawn out and expensive divorce. Jane uses Roger for money and office power then dumps Roger for a younger man who doesn't work at SC.
Betty meeting a hot guy at the country club, someone that is Don's peer in looks and power.
Betty has a hot affair and Don doesn't know....just suspects she seems "different".
More storyline re: Carla,Hollis,Shelia.
Ya-y-y- bring it on!
Have to say Jon Hamm's portrayal of "Don Draper" brings the hot and cool! Don has been the focal point for me this season. His behaving de-fanged at work and home sucked! There's something about Don Draper, slutting it up, that is sooooo damn sexy! His affairs are when he's at his steamiest!! But I enjoyed him ripping the Fellas new ones because they laughed at poor, pissed himself Freddy Rumson. Don's big fist meeting Unfunny Jimmy's puny jaw was explosive and one the best scenes this season! His telling Preggy to not apologize for her success due to hard work was priceless. That incredulous look he gave Silver Fox Roger after the Mona confrontation is the reason Jon Hamm's nuanced performance won him that Golden Globe!
I don't care what anyone says, Jon Hamm is kicking ass and letting the bodies fall where they may starring as "Don Draper!"
They'll reconcile I think, but only after Betty has some sort of horse accident or binge drinking mishap where Don is required by moral protocol to be at home with her. He is incapable of love. His egocentrism won't allow him to. I just know something horrible is going to happen to Betts. He doesn't love her, he loves what she brings to his facade. She doesn't love him anymore. I hope she gets him back. I love his character, but I really hate how he treats her. Revenge is sweet.
Wouldn't it be SWEET if Betty had an affair, conceived a child and named it Dick? I'm wrong, I know, but it would be GREAT!
On the face of it, Don isn't the worst husband in the world. He's neither a falling down drunk, wife beater nor does he physically hurt or abuse his kids. He's a good provider, sensible with money (well other than handing $2500 to Midge and $5000 to Adam), but he's not completely a wastral with the cash.
Yes, the cheating is hurtful and seems to be something he cannot control - it's like his one escape valve from the pressure of being in the assumed identity 24/7. So.....I think he does love Betty to some extent, and he definitely loves his kids, and I think Betty loves him. I hope they do stay together because I think he needs his family (wife, kids) more than he realizes or understands.
If Don were living alone, and free to do anything he felt like, I don't think he'd be that happy. He seemed forlorn and just "existing" in his scenes at the Roosevelt Hotel. His family gives him a purpose to continue on in this whole charade, and even if he gave up the charade, I don't know that he'd fare too well without them.
if you watch the blog, Matt Weiner and January Jones say the reconciled, but you are left wondering if it was because of Betty's pregnancy or because of the letter. I think the letter, because you saw Betty cry when she was reading it. Plus they thought the world was going to end, and Betty needed him more than anything. Are their slates clean...No. That is why next season we will see what happens with them at the Ginault launch party.Ginault watch company (www.ginault.com), based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, keeps a comprehensive collections of vintage and new Rolex timepieces to preserve the legacy of Swiss haute horlogerie. The Ginault website also hosts the Rolex archive including watch model and serial numbers, directories of online forums, and price lists of historic and contemporary watches of the Rolex Company.
But utimately like Weiner said, Family keeps people together whether we accept it or not.
