The Winner!
Best Dramatic Series....Yay!

Does anyone else get turned off by the political crap? This is entertainment for Pete's Sake!!! I watched both conventions I do not need this crap now
Anyone?
I can't even describe how happy I am that they won for Best Writing and Best Drama. It is hands down the Best Show on Television. I was clapping in my livingroom, all teary eyed!! I love them!! That's what happens when you combine phenomenal writing and superb acting. Congratulations.
I get what you're saying but....it's always been that way.
I don't get turned off by political statements, as long as I sense that they have a real passion to back up what they are saying. They are using the opportunity they rarely have with such a wide viewership, to say what's important to them.
I thought the 5 reality hosting gig sucked though. Horrible. Never again please.
So happy Mad Men won!!!!!!!!!! Yay!
lorantscan, I agree that political comments are out of place on an awards show. I've never understood why actors think that just because they are very good at pretending and get paid outrageous amounts of money to do so, it somehow gives them the right to tell everyone what they should be thinking. Go figure.
Supremely happy about their six Emmys, especially for Best Drama and writing. Also, for Bryan Cranston winning best actor in drama for "Breaking Bad". This gives AMC validation and confirmation on their two original tv series to continue on, and also attract advertising $$. Can expect MadMen Season 3 in 2009! Wonderful!!!
So mad that Jon & John didn't win! But I am really happy that the series got the two big ones!! Great show!!
I'm excited for the wins this year, the first season of Mad Men!
The actor who won over Slattery had a great part in Damages, and won't be back next year (suicide), so we can congratulate him knowing Mad Men will be back.
After seeing the episodes thus far in Season 2, I've got a feeling wins for our cast will be undeniable next year! Agree?
Scfan - Back to political comments - I was sooo enthralled by JOHN ADAMS. We sat down as a family and watched it and we all read the book after. We truly gained a knowledge and appreciation for our Founding Fathers (compare them to our current so called leaders on all sides who are an embarrassment) The acting was absolutely out of this world and Giamatti and Linney deserve OSCARS and even though I like Tom Wilkenson I was rooting for Stephen Dillane who played Thomas Jefferson. But what pissed me off is that EVERYONE (including Tom Hanks) when accepting this award had something snippy and elistist to say. If these nimrods TRULY understood what John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were about (as portrayed in the book) they would know that Adams and Jefferson, while polar opposites politically, DETESTED the partison bickering and RESPECTED each other and were intelligent in their arguements. (They also predicted this kind of political atmosphere we have in our country today) Sorry if I am ranting here - wish I could find an HBO site or something to vent. It truly put a damper on the show for me because I was looking forward to JOHN ADAMS as much as MAD MEN. I was going to buy JOHN ADAMS and MAD MEN DVD's as x-mas gifts for friends/family but JOHN ADAMS is now off my shopping list.
memo to all actors:when u win an award, walk to the microphone, say thank you, then shut the f up!
....whenever i get disappointed about the not-wins, i remind myself this is about Season One only..... and that the competition are all at the top of their games also. Tee Vee is better than ever before in history. (Oh, the wasteland that was 5-6 channels....)
not sure, but guessing no one had seen Season Two yet.... i'll be VERY disappointed if Season Two doesn't win more awards than Season One. Two seasons is a bonafide track record....
uncovering the most brutal, twisted, seamy side of life is one thing. it was amazing, but it's been done.
i still say mad men, in its category, is unique. i can't think of another series in Tee Vee history to compare it to.
i think it's the lack of blood-and-guts sex violence corruption and brutality shock value that might be putting a little "wallflower" spin on its reception, but i absolutely would not change a thing about Mad Men.
i have been obsessed with all their series thus far but, personally, i am happier than hell HBO DID turn it down. there would have been all that pressure to address that style because it's trendy now, and that would not be right for this.
it would be amazing if this were a whole new trend in smart and subtle televised creations.... call me crazy!
....RRRRRRRRR. i'm distorting every thread i touch!!
i'm in a technical vortex or something. it's not just me - there are others who have this problem, but i don't see you guys having that problem - right?
(holy crap what if it's my computer?)
(sorry!)
....wait - Laurie B. - it's you again - do me a favor - when you post next time, put the ACTUAL EST time on your post, to compare to what it says.
i'm terribly sorry, but your time is incorrect, so i'm wondering if you are stuck at the BOTTOM of every thread, and that's why i look like i'm out of order..... does that make sense?
Lorantscan and SCFan: I'm with you.... can't stand these people who get up there and make their political commentary as if the fact that they're entertainers makes their opinions more valid or worth listening to. It's like politicians giving their conventions speeches and oh by the way, critiquing various acting performances while they're at it. Can you imagine??
STFU is right!!
Sally Fields' best acceptance speech contained, as I recall, "You like me! You really like me!"
Of course, the reason she put out all the BS during her acceptance speech was because otherwise nobody would pay attention to what she was saying. If she'd mentioned her appreciation for her hairdresser's and make-up artist's efforts, I'd have a lot more respect for her. As it was, it was yada, yada, yada.
That goes for all the others who only made their positions known and didn't change the mind of a single watcher.
I was so excited when they announced Mad Men winning Best Drama....... it made sitting through the long and silly show worthwhile. I was really bummed out about Jon and John not winning, but they'll be back next year and we can all hope for a win then!
I agree with with lorantscan and SCfan that this is an awards show, not a political commentary for celebs to sound off. If I remember correctly, last year Sally Field got up there and made an arse of herself while giving her acceptance speech.I admire her as an actress, but can do without the heartfelt sentiments she has about the pres, the War,the best choice we need to make come November. There's a time and a place for everything as they say. You knew the show was going to get off to a rough statrt when it was hosted by 5 knuckle headed "reality" hosts.Give me a break.
I am just glad that Mad Men earned the respect and admiration it deserves. This win should keep us confirmed for a season 3 and hopefully more to follow. I hate to think of the long winter ahead without MM to look forward to on Sunday's .Guess I'll have to find something on HBO till July 2009................
As I said on another thread, I felt like Mad Men was the stealth horse coming from behind and making the win right before the finish line. Not only was I excited about AMC's winning shows, I couldn't help but think...someone at HBO is going to be fired for letting this show slip through their fingers. When Matt Weiner talked, HBO should have listened. Cheers to you AMC! ;o)
Didn't you think it was very classy (and smart) of Matthew Weiner to thank David Chase? He's an elegant man who's created and equally elegant and brilliant series....and as you said, Dry Manhattan, it is unique...perhaps we have a paradigm shift in TV...once again...
I was delighted when our little show won two of the most important Emmys this year. It's the writing of the show that makes it great, although having a cast of smart, beautiful people also helps to reel the viewers in! I agree that Mr. Weiner seems like a very classy guy; you can't expect anything less from the person who created this classy show.
As to the political comments on awards show, it does irritate me. First of all, it's not the time or place - people are there for an escapist, indulgent, entertainment awards show, for pete's sake! Also, I'm sick of hearing the political beliefs of actors, like their opinions are the most educated, important in the whole world. Everyone has their personal political beliefs, but very few get the chance to express them on national television and most of them seem to go in one direction. It's not that I dislike hearing things that I may disagree with, it's that I think it's unfair and not very classy (yet all too easy) to take potshots at people who cannot answer right back. They can stand at the podium, make their snarky remarks, and stand smugly while people clap for them, but people who disagree with them (sometimes while sitting on their couch) don't get to answer back - we just get to yell at our TV to no avail. JMHO ...end rant :)
Yes, Drink&Smoke! I can't understand why HBO said no to M. Weiner esp. when he was such a big part of the Sopranos' success...I'll never understand that, never.
But, I'm glad AMC grabbed it, because I like the fact that the writers have to come up with real intellectual dialogue if only because they can't throw f**k and f*****g in every other word! lol
Yes, SCfan, that is just one of the many reasons I love Mad Men - the lack of profanity. Of course, back then adults did not use profanity like people do today. The "F" word was really shocking then, and even casual swearing was frowned upon.
Our beloved Mad Men reminds me of "Seabiscuit". He was little and yet he had a huge heart and was fiercely competitive.
Our little show came from behind and showed all the big showy "popular" (?) guys up....Hot Damn!
I'm glad I wasn't the only one scratching my head wondering "What was HBO thinking when they turned down Mad Men? Did they think Matt Weiner only had one good show in him?". I'm sure heads are rolling at HBO as they find out who was responsible for letting the winning horse slip through their hands. Cheers AMC, for giving us this amazing show! ;o)
