The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit

Jimmy Barrett once again has the most significant line of the episode, following from his "You're garbage" reality-check a few weeks back.

This week, he calls Don "the man in the gray flannel suit", an analogy to Don as the main character (Tom) from the book of the same name:

A book about a veteran working as a buisness man, struggling to "take responsibility for his own life" - sound familiar? And the character's wife is even named Betsy!

Matt Weiner's deep-meaning allusions continue...

By the way, I loved last week's title of "A Night to Remember" for the same reasons - an episode about everything in people's lives coming unraveled titled the same as a movie about the world's most famous sinking ship; seems rather appropriate.

Hi Brian B.! I remember thinking about "The Man In The Grey Flannel Suit" and "The Days Of Wine And Roses" when I first started watching MM.

I have not read the books, so I'm going on movie info. alone.
The first movie deals with post war readjustment, and trying to fit in as a "cog in the wheel" in the working world.
The second, more with the "ad game", alcoholism, and the sleazy tactics used to obtain and keep clients in that world.
Both set in the MM time period.

A shoutout to Matt Weiner's acknowledgement of the seminal influence that "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" plays in the story arc of Madmen, and using Jimmy Barrett to voice it.

Although Don Draper is decidedly more antihero than the Tom Rath character, John Hamm's use of facial expression and stolid reserve unmistakenly evince Gregory Peck's portrayal of the same stoic alienation, even down to the quizzical that Don Draper gives to people.
