greytone - maybe that was the point. Maybe the joke was just a way of showing how Harry is part of the frat club, the new guy will be part of the frat club, and Joan will always be left out.

I think that's the point, we are only supposed to hear the "punch line" if you will.

i kind of agree with hanna, since it seems like the point of the scene was to show joan being basically left out or passed over.

it's also showing joan the error of her thinking all these years.... that "those hills and valleys" can only take you so far, for so long. Then, with nothing to back it up, and not being part of the "good ole boys" club, you become invisible or irrelevant, as someone on here pointed out earlier.

i don't think every young woman realizes that phenomena is out there, waiting.

i think Harry would have very much gone to bat for Joan, had Sterling's answer been less dismissive...... Since Joan has cultivated the whole "sex is power" thing all these years, it doesn't occur to anyone to think of her as more. SHE didn't know she was more, or wanted more, until that moment.

I think the joke is that if you are in the car with a person who is too drunk to know which way to turn, you are stupid. He'll be sober in the morning but - you will still be stupid.
