The Clients

Does anyone know if MM has to get approvals and/or pay royalties to the companies they mention and showcase? While they are doing homages to the ad biz back then, most of the "clients" are still in business. And, there is product placement in the show as well, i.e., the Utz potato chips on top of the Draper's fridge, for example.

Yes, I did see the Ritz box!. Thanks for reminding me, Dry. I am assuming they would have to get permission, but I do wonder just how expensive this would be to the MM budget(s). (I used to be a producer, so I wonder about these things!)

.....they would have to, wouldn't they? did you catch the Ritz box on top next to Utz Potato Chips? looks exactly the same!

I read a newspaper article about the unique advertising occurring on this show. The change is so minor, it's possible you missed it, because I did. I have figured out it doesn't occur on the OnDemand episodes, but on AMC broadcasts you will see a 'lead in' statistic prior to a commercial for a product. These lead-ins are a unique revenue stream for the show.

For instance, words flash on the screen telling you about the drinking habits of men in 1962---fade to a commercial for some sort of drink. (It's a bad example...I've been waiting to see it again but they are not inserted on the OnDemand episodes) You will read them on the episode's premiere night, though. I will check to see if I see them on the re-broadcast tonight). The article stated that these spots are now called “Mad-vertising (or something with ’Mad’ in it) lead-ins" and are a first-of-its-kind revenue stream being considered by other television shows, as well. (Sorry...I've looked and looked and looked for the article---CRS crisis...)

Anyway, now that I know, I won't be surprised to read a tie-in statistic about the number of crackers eaten in America fade to a commercial for Ritz. I am sure it is deliberate product placement ... Weiner (and his team) have been pretty smart...

I heard a conversation with him on Sunday (NPR.org)...I didn't realize he was born in 1965...

They have been doing so well, in fact, that ad agency shows are in the works at TNT and NBC....
