Sweetheart, Get me a cuppa coffee.

I have to laugh - although it's a rueful sort of laugh - at the way every woman on the show is addressed as "Sweetheart". Even the new kids in town, Smith and Smith, who are going to be the next big wave, call Peggy "Sweetheart". I remember repeating, in a very sweet way of course, so as not to get into trouble, "My name is.... (always the first name) Mr. .... (he was always "Mister" this or that.

Yeah, Flowerpower, that "sweetheart" and "luv" business got real old real fast, didn't it? Wasn't until people started talking about sexual harrassment in the workplace that men stopped addressing the clerical staff that way. It used to make me so angry to be in a meeting taking notes and be the only woman addressed like that - the other so-called professional women would be called by their names, but if you were termed clerical, you were "Doll," "Sweetheart," "Luv," "Honey," etc. Yikes, old memories and they still make me mad.

Hi flowerpower! Welcome to the double post club!! I'm a charter member!

I was suprised at the Smith comment to Peggy too. But, then I thought of a 60's history show I saw. One woman who was interviewed said that even though women were part of organizations like the SDS, and other protest groups, they were still expected by their male counterparts to do things like make the refreshments for the organizations. And this was the late 60's! No wonder the Women's movement followed right after!!
