Sal on CNN

I flipped around during a commercial and there was Sal talking about being gay. Did anyone else see him?

Didn't see that, maybe it was him speaking about his personal life. I can't imagine them bringing him out of the closet in the 60's!!

Yes, it was Bryan Batt speaking about himself and about Sal. He said he is often asked by people when Sal 'will come out of the closet'. I hope the interview will be on youtube or maybe CNN's web site. As I said, I came into the middle of the segment, but it seemed to be about gays in America and they were talking to Bryan Batt as a gay man and as an actor who plays a gay man on TV. Although, I don't know if Batt ever even said that Sal is an admitted gay on MM. I think that was the reason for his being interviewed, to show the difference in acceptance levels between now and then. Espcially in the work place.

I'll have to find that, sorry I missed it.
Bryan Batt's character Sal has become one of my favs.
I know what happened to Freddie was pitiful, but, Sal's hysterical laughter was too good! I laughed more because of his reaction!

60schild, I thought that laughter was out of character for Sal, I thought he would be the only man who didn't laugh. I guess I was stereotyping him as sensitive. Although, I was thinking Freddie was having one of those 'small' strokes and not just drunk. I wanted them to call an ambulance...but actually first thought 911 and then paramedics, both terms too new for 62. So, as you can see, I missed a lot of what was actually going on. : )

this should get you to the youtube of the CNN segmment. It is over 5 minutes long with Bryan Batt on at about 2:25 of it. It is a discussion in general of gays on TV, with just the brief interview of Bryan Batt speaking about Sal and himself.

Hi Sizzie! What happened to Freddie was probably related to a condition called hepatic encephelopathy.
It's a condition seen in advanced alcoholism. Basically, the brain tissue becomes so damaged from alcohol that the person develops dementia, and neurological symptoms that mimic strokes, seizures etc. The urinary incontinence he experienced can also happen.

You're right, no 911 or CPR training in 1962 for the general public.
I thought it was horrible when Freddie passed out in the chair, and either Sal or Peggy asked if he was dead?
Pete, in disgust puts his hand up to Freddie's mouth and nose and says no, he's not dead.
Then, Pete just goes on with plans for the sales pitch. No pity except from Peggy.
I remember Peggy saying in a later scene that she "loved Freddie". She really cares for him.

She credited him with her career advancement, and Pete comes back at her and takes credit... Sooo Pete like!!

Thanks 60'schild, I noticed there were several references to how dry Duck is. I think he is drinking again...but wonder when it will come into play. 'they think we're all like that anyway', Roger said to Don. It was sad to see Freddie and his career leave, but it was good to show it happened. I agree, too, about Peggy. She sometimes comes off as detached and cold, but she showed she does care. And she credited Freddie with getting her start. I didn't remember that.
