Paul Newman

Let's all take a moment to pay tribute to a wonderful actor and a nice human being. Anyone who loves movies has to have any number of Mr. Newman's in their list of all time favorites. A personal favorite of mine is "The Long Hot Summer" with his wife, Joanne Woodward. Share your favorites with us.

It's hard to pick a favorite but Hud, The Hustler, and Cool Hand Luke to name a few. He was magnificent.

user-pic

Indeed, he was both a magnificent actor AND human being. "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" are my faves.

Thank you, Paul.

Man oh man, that scene of him lying there across Patricia Neal's bed (forget her character's name--the family's cook/houskeeper) in "Hud"-- and giving her that lecherous look then saying (after her comment that "yes" she DOES STILL "get The Itch"---after dumping her no-good husband)
"Well, let me know if it gets to botherin' ya."

Other than Don Draper, does it get any sexier than that????

user-pic

I loved Paul in "The Verdict." To me, he was at his sexiest with the silver fox hair, slightly longer in the back and I remember his name to be "Frankie" like the guys I grew up with. He was a down-on-his-luck lawyer/ambulance chaser and I wanted to put my arms around him and let him know everything would be all right. MMMMMMMMMMMM

user-pic

Another of his best lines:
Sundance Kid: "I can't swim!"

Butch: (laughing hysterically) "Can't swim!!?? Hell, the fall'll probably kill ya!"

user-pic

Yes, SCfan, I loved him as Butch - when he showed up on the bicycle and took Etta riding I wondered how in the world she could prefer Sundance - I was a Butch Cassidy girl all the way.

user-pic

Yes, wasthere, that silver mane did not hurt PN's looks one bit...it improved them, IMHO, too!
Like Richard Gere and Sean Connery (even if his is a good toupee!) that "silver fox" look is soooooo sexy.

zerelda - I totally agree with you, I would take Butch Cassidy over Sundance any day! You couldn't do better than those piercing blue eyes and sweet, self-deprecating sense of humor.

Paul Newman was class act, and don't think they make actors like him any more. I wish young actors of today would take a page from his life example - having a solid personal life, a sense of humility, and social activism will make you much happier then never-ending partying and having paparazzi follow you around. He was a pretty special guy. God bless!

user-pic

You said it, hanna...he was the total package.

user-pic

I liked his comment when asked if he ever gets tempted to stray when making movies with all those gorgeous women...he said "Why would I go out for hamburger when I have steak at home?"
Mrs. Newman (Joanne Woodward) was a lucky lady!

user-pic

I keep remembering different movies I enjoyed him in over the years. Not the really big ones like "Hud" (although he was hotter than hot in that one), but Judge Roy Bean, "Sometimes a Great Notion" and "Nobody's Fool" - just such an enjoyable actor.

user-pic

Oh, yeah. I just bought a copy of "Sometimes a Great Notion" for my father last Christmas (he's a former logger and a Newman fan). Such a great movie, and Newman was awesome as usual.

He could truly play a Southerner

....it's impossible to pick one, but Cat On a Hot Tin Roof is special to me for personal reasons......

he should have lived another ten years.... check out the article re: Paul Newman on smoking.... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,429177,00.html#

my heart goes out to his family and friends.

I also loved him in The Verdict. He was great, and it was a great movie. I also loved James Mason in it.

Anyone see "The Young Philadelphians?" A very under-rated movie from the late '50's.

user-pic

Gail, is that the one with Pier Angeli and Barbara Rush? If it's the one I'm thinking it is, it was soooo good...about lawyers, right?

default userpic

Don't remember the co-stars, but it was about Philadelphia lawyers. Very seldom seen on TV.

I saw him on Broadway a few years ago in Our Town (he played the Stage Manager). Sad to say, he wasn't really on his game.

But he was a true icon, and a great humanitarian.

We will not see his like again.

I just LOVED Paul Newman. He was the total package.

I thought he aged way better than Robert Redford too.

Thanks for everything, Butch. We'll miss you.
