New Career for Betty?

What if Don and Betty were to divorce? I could see Betty starting up some type of business... but what? She can't really model anymore. But she is educated and intellient. Ideas?

Betty could easily be your classic Avon Lady or Tupperware hostess. The most "traditional" outs for a lot of women who hadn't been in the office front lines.

Oh yeah. OR.... Mary Kay was founded summer of 1963. I could see Betty tooling around in a pink Cadillac, couldn't you?

Maybe next season?

Hi jamm54 and Laurie B! Both are good
possibiliites. I was wondering what her college major was? That may determine her choice of career.

What about catering? That around the world dinner she planned shows she must have some interest in food. She even had one of her mother's recipes included - was it a noodle dish?

OR, maybe she could get work at the stables, exercising the horses - wouldn't pay much, probably, but at least she would be around the horses which she seems to prefer to her kids.

OR, a decorator, specializing in after-the-divorce remodeling.

OR, I can see her taking a secretarial course and winding up managing an office and becoming another Joan - only colder - she would have no use for philandering husbands coming on to her.

Of all the female characters, Betty is quite a survivor, but I can see her being a very embittered divorcee on the order of a Mrs. Treadwell (Viven Leigh) from "Ship of Fools" (1965).

I like Laurie B.'s idea of Betty as a "Mary Kay" lady in her pink caddy! BTW, anybody ever use that stuff...they sure make good skin care products...

...she'll take the kids, move in with her dad, go back to school, get her Ph.D, and become Dr. Arnold Wayne's partner in private practice.

Draper will be her first patient.

I was turned on to Mary Kay when I was 19 years old and even though I try other product lines, I am engrained in the "cleanse, tone, moisturize" routine and have been doing it religiously for the past 30 yrs. To paraphrase Pete Campbell: "Thanks Mary Kay!"

Hey I kinda like that catering idea too!

I could see Betty being a hard-headed business woman. She has a steely no-nonsense demeanor.

I bet she does go home to Daddy, now that I think about it. She will want to feel protected and loved after this blowup with Don, so home to Daddy it will be.

I can see her that as well but how's she going to get the intro to that sort of position in the early 60's? Of course, with a modeling background she could work her way up in an upscale dress shop. Fly to Paris twice a year, check up on her old photographer/boyfriend in... Italy(?)

Selling Mary Kay (or Avon or Tupperware) takes business sense, so does catering or anything you consider a business and not a hobby. If you're in it to make money, you have to have the sense and ability to grow it and watch the balance sheet.

Or another great area for women is real estate. I could Betty in that pretty easily, especially high end real estate. Not a stretch - her looks would work for her in that business.

warning plot spoiler.

betty divorces don draper in the upcoming series of madmen and becomes a hippy groupie, addicted to heroin. after five years she comes back to donald, who was forced to look after the kids and is desperate for help. typical don draper fashion - he pretends she doesn't even exist and walks past her on his way to get a taxi with barret.
