Marathon Comments
Hello, fellow Maddicts -- are you all feeling as good as I am right now? I've "gone without" for 10 days and now am getting a feast! The only downer is the stupid hotels.com commercial.
In "The New Girl" is the cop who detains Don played by "Ross the Intern?" He looks SO familiar and I swear that's who it is.

Loved the marathon Mad Men, but, I swear, I would like to drown that heartattack Lipitor man in the bathtub along with those bubble blowing nincompoops. If I never see those two commercials again, I will die a happy woman.
Further thoughts:
Don and his kids make me sad.
Sal's mother and the mother of Pete's blonde model should get an apartment together.
Just what the heck is wrong with Anita's husband, and oh, gawd, I forgot all about plastic covers on couches - how uncomfortable to sit on!
If this story were true, Don would have died with Bobbie in that car wreck - no seat belts or air bags, even.
I know they probably quit making them for safety reasons, but I sure miss those bench seats in the front so a person, if they were of a mind to, could slide over next to their sweetie.
Something I missed the first time: Don Draper at the bathroom sink with nothing on but a pink towel - when he sat down and the towel flopped open I thought my heart was gonna stop. Don you are such a tease!
I hope Ken calls Kitty to thank her for dinner and they fall in love, and she leaves Sal, thus forcing him out of the closet, and he winds up with that good looking client guy that is always asking him how he is doing.
I watched each episode and enjoyed them enormously. The only scene I did not watch was the one with Duck and Chauncey - I had to turn the channel. I hate that Duck all over again.

Just what the heck is wrong with Anita's husband...
Bad back. Not all that unusual and even today can be incapacitating. On the other hand, you may have noticed that he was vertical to greet Fr. Gill.
...Don would have died with Bobbie in that car wreck - no seat belts or air bags, even.
They weren't going that fast. Didn't even roll over onto its top. Now if they'd had a front-end collision with another car...
After a busy day I watched the marathon until I fell asleep (didn't get very far) but there were still things I picked up on. Can I share them with you?
--The scene with the mechanic still scares me. The handprints he left on the hood came to naught. I still wonder why Betty was so late. Where was she? Did she lie to Don about where she was?
--We never did find out which secretary got in trouble because Kinsey stole the typewriter.
--I’m starting to recognize the secretaries now (scary). Peggy’s old roommate was the secretary kissing Ken while Sal and Kitty watched. She was the same woman watching Peggy kiss Eugene in the hall. They left the party together, and reminded me of when my girlfriends and I refused to leave one another even if one was being seriously tempted. The roommate is identified as 'Secretary' and is played by Sarah Jannett Parish.
--Don could no more tell Pete how to act (when his father died in the airplane crash) than the man in the moon. Don lied through his teeth about what he would do and faked his way through the entire conversation. Pete is so concerned with appearances. In his quest to appear to be grieving all he got right was his suit (which, by the way, are always perfectly chosen for his character).
--Did anyone else notice the maid waiting on the family at the Dykman-Campbell household? She was a much older grey-haired woman in full maid attire. She was supposed to be invisible in the performance of her job, so you very easily could have missed her. Very different job than Carla at the Drapers.
--The Asian woman in the restaurant trying to pick up Don has been named Ling, and is played by.Elizabeth Tsing. I mention her because they wouldn't have bothered naming her and crediting her performance if she were unimportant.
Fell asleep here...dreamed of Episode 9...holding my breath until Sunday...didn't read the spoilers. (This is like being pregnant and waiting to find out if it's a girl or a boy.) Either way, you know it's gonna be good!
Greytone, I agree about the Chinese(?) waitress. She certainly struck Don D. - he couldn't take his eyes off her. I wonder if there is anything in his past that would connect with her - did he meet someone while in Korea or the Far East that she reminded him of?
I also agree about the scene with Pete and Don on the death of Pete's dad. I found it curious that Pete would immediately turn to Don Draper for support. Why not Roger or Duck? Pete tries to use everything to his advantage, and to go to Roger and/or even Cooper and tell them of his loss would have seemed more like him.
zerelda...
Pete approaching Don is not out of the ordinary if we remember Roger told him Don saved his job. Pete was under the impression that Don has his best interest at heart and was aiming at getting the job Duck now has.
Duck showered him with compliments to get him to partner on the approach to American Airlines. Since that time, Pete has been scurrying behind Duck. He doesn't realize they don't always give him all the information he wants because they love to see him frantically run around trying to work the information to his advantage.
I really don't think either one wants to mentor him. His ideas (like buying an office dog) still don't connect the dots to make a pretty picture. I think its the S&M swirl he's got going in his brain! lol
I want to read spoilers...where are they??
Yes, they don't always give Pete info. In the epi. where Betty and Don host the dinner party - Duck comes into Don's office and says he may not be able to attend the dinner and meet with "Crab" Colson. Pete is completely left out and asks who Crab is. Clearly he has not been invited. After Duck exits, Pete stands there a minute and looks at Don, probably waiting for Don to invite him. Don waves his hands in dismissal and Pete slinks out.
I also wonder about those mechanic's handprints on the hood - the camera really went in on those-what was that all about?
What is the name of Crab Colson's firm? And what kind of firm is it?
I think the mechanic's handprints were symbolic of Betty coming close to getting her hands dirty.
Nancy- Crab is with some Public Relations firm I believe
Aside from references to Palm Sunday and Easter, I have not noticed the Drapers mentioning any church affiliation. They do not appear to ever attend services, unless I missed something. I think that is kind of unusual given the time period they are living in. You would expect them to attend church each Sunday morning, at least Betty and the children, for Sunday school.
I gotta say, I wish Don was a Catholic - that is one long overdue confession I would love to give a listen to!
Hi Maddicts! Another classic line, almost as good as Don's Mona line...
Roger's line...
"Duck, Crab, Crab, Duck" LOL!!
Hi zerelda! I don't think the Drapers practice a formal religion.
Though I found it interesting that Betty said she couldn't dump Sally on her friend Francine on Palm Sunday?!
I was raised a Roman Catholic, and all we did on Palm Sunday was go to Mass, have dinner, and put the new blessed palm up around the house.
I speculated a while ago that I thought Don/Dick may be Jewish...something about the whole Jewish theme in season one made me wonder.
I may be way off. but, is Whitman a Jewish name?
P.S. zerelda, you are right about that confession of Don's!! I don't think there are enough Our Fathers and Hail Marys to handle that one!

......60schild, i just read the other day an interview with matt weiner where he was asked the most outlandish prediction so far....... he said the "draper is jewish" theory. that put it to bed for me.
is whitman drapers' original family's last name (that is a brain twister!)? or is that the name of the stepfather?
the drapers are WASPs, but maybe francine or carlton are catholic. could be betty didn't want to impose just because it was a holiday.....
Hi Dry Manhattan! Thanks for the info. about my Don/Dick Jewish theory.
Did Matt say anything about my crazy theory that Peggy was never pregnant, that she imagined the whole thing?
60schild...
This is what I've concluded and has been my state of mind since the season began: In interviews with Matt Weiner, he will respond to questions about the child by referring to him as 'Peggy's baby.' Until he changes and refers to it as 'the baby' I'll go forward with that understanding.
It's one way I use to reduce the number of loose ends I fixate over. lol
......60schild.......no i hadn't heard that yet, but it doesn't mean it's not out there - anything's possible!
the third time my mouth fell open, i knew that mad men was really something special.
i can't help trying to figure it all out, but also know that whatever imagining, it's probably going to be a complete surprise.
some people on here though, are getting very good at picking up on subtle clues left for us by Matt Weiner and the other writers...... kind of like and Easter Egg hunt!
Thanks greytone and Dry Manhattan!
Dry Manhattan, Easter egg hunt...please NO MORE BLUE EGGS!!! LOL!
