Mad Men at the Emmys
Did anyone notice the strained behavior between Jon Hamm and January Jones. They stood side by side on the stage but never looked at one another or spoke to one another. Does anyone know what their off-screen deal is?

I saw the strained behavior and also thought that they were having a torrid affair as well. Conversely I thought that January Jones might not want to stand upstage since she was not nominated for an award. She may be less comfortable at the Emmy awards since she started her career as a model and not an actress. She is in the big time now and may be nervous about doing the wrong thing.
I noticed that too, but I chalked it up to January Jones being nervous. She looked really nervous to me, like she didn't know what to do. I think January Jones has the best of both worlds, she gets to make out with Jon Hamm, touch him, smell him, kiss him, all without breaking up his 10 year relationship and all the complications that would come with having an affair with him. And she gets paid to do it! Lucky girl!
Also, did you guys see on the red carpet when Lisa Rinna interviewed him, when he said goodbye he grabbed her hand and kissed it?. Swoon.
Daisy Squire...I agree that January is "lucky" since she gets to do all that fun stuff with Jon ("touch him","smell him","kiss him",etc.) and "gets paid to do it!" how lucky can a girl get??!! uh..excuse me while I go get a bucket of ice water and dump it over my head...sigh
Hey, it's their first awards show for a lot of them. I put it down to nerves. I didn't see any "strained" looks - nervousness, yes. I think it was nice that the whole ensemble (though a few were missing like Harry, Ken, Pete?) got to go up on stage together, and in essence, win as a group. Makes it great for all of them! January is a Capricorn (I think), she was probably nervous as hell just being there.

Hmmm.... that could only mean one thing. They're having a torrid affair in real life.
I noticed that as well - who wouldn't have an affair with him!!
I believe all the women reporters voiced their love fest for Hamm this morning.
As it should be.
I did see Pete and Peggy hug in the audience before they went onstage.
My eyes were so busy looking for all of the characters, I couldn't get the nuances.
Betty's look was wonderful! What a beauty!
Peggy, as well.
I believe Nora mentioned in her post re: her walk-on role that she saw them in person on the set (or eating lunch together) and they were friendly together. I hope there's nothing wrong!
They all looked so great accepting the award. I think it's wonderful that a little "free" cable network like AMC outshone everyone else. HBO carried it all for so long, but MM is really great programming...so refreshing without the gratuitous sex, swearing and violence. My kid can walk into the room and I don't have to change the channel (like Sopranos, Deadwood and others).
Jamm54: Harry, Ken and Pete were there! You just couldn't recognize them without their MM costumes! I saw a photo in today's New York Post -- you would not have recognized Rich Sommer (Harry)! He wasn't wearing his glasses and his hair was combed over his forehead. Aaron Staton (?) (Ken) also had totally different hair and a beard, I think. Vincent Kartheiser looked about the same. The guy who plays Paul Kinsey was there too.
Thank goodness Jon Hamm had his hair slicked back a la Don Draper. As for any frostiness between him and January Jones, well, maybe they were staying "in character!"
I don't think there was any "coolness" between JH and JJ - think it was sheer nerves!
Hey, did everyone notice that the lovely Maggie Siff (Rachel Menken) was onstage as part of the ensemble for the Best Drama series win?! That was great, I thought. Rachel was an integral part of Season 1, and may be in future seasons (who knows?). Glad to see Maggie up there with the group, as she should be!
.................... .................. ................. ..... ............. ............ .. ..... ..... ...... ...... ........ ..... ........... ......... .......... ......oh! .....um .... say to now, going what i was??
.......still haven't seen it yet - it's on DVR. now i'm curious. that IS standard behavior for the very guilty (think Brad and Angelina....)
"The lady doth protest too much, methinks."
someone else said Elisabeth Moss was also pulling a "Peggy" and acting a little wall-flowerish.
i have to confess i've been watching the scenes again in re-runs to gauge their ON-screen chemistry, for any telling details. otherwise known as "GET A LIFE YOU BIG LOSER."
Jolie 10 - i fully agree. i am a huge fan of cable and the (finally) realistic sex and violence and profanity and the raw side, but not for this.
Mad Men isn't LIKE anything else on Tee Vee, as WONDERFUL as all those series, and their until now refreshing sex, violence and corruption, are.
I noticed the distance between them, too. It was hard to miss! And with everybody else so high-spirited and "together", I thought they made an actual effort to stand apart. That could mean:
1) It was accidental -- but they must have seen it, and I'm surprised they didn't correct it by "moving in";
2) It was deliberate -- although it seems to me that they would not want to spoil the atmosphere on a successful show which may have a long run;
3) It was because they are actually having an affair -- though in another post I mentioned how close Jon and his gal seem; or
4) It was because he wanted to reassure his gal that they are not close in real life. That comes closest to the mark for me.
Jolie 10: Yes, they don't use potty-mouth profanity on Mad Men as it should be. Most people didn't use it then like they do today. They smoked their brains out and drank heavily, but with clean mouths. Having been in my 20's in that era, to this day I still smoke (unfortunately),enjoy a Martini, but don't use profanity. I prefer to take advantage of my good vocabulary.
It could also be a reflection of the season finale episode they just finished filming. Animosity/frost between Don and Betty? Coming right up!
Isn't Jon Hamm just a sweetheart?! In his interviews, he is such a gentleman, self-deprecating, and overall just a doll. No ego or pomposity there. Very, very nice man. Many congratulations to him for his "new-found" success, and hopefully a long career in Hollywood.
It must be a lot of fun to work on that set. They all seem like an extremely nice group of people, but I give credit to Matt Weiner for setting the tone on the set. He seems like one of the sweetest, down-to-earth people you could ever hope to meet. He often says he's absolutely anal about this show (detail, plot, characters), and that might be maddening to work with, but he still registers as being someone you'd love to work for. He obviously loves his actors, their characters, and the series.
I am reading your posts that there is speculation about the "off camera" relationship between JJ and JH. All this because of a perceived distance between them while they were up on the stage for a total of 2-3 minutes!
C'mon people. If anything they were probably nervous as all get out! I saw them interview Jon Hamm on the red carpet and he said he couldn't believe that they were there. He also seemed utterly devoted to his long time girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt. Watch their body language.....
It would be hard NOT to develop a bit of a crush on a colleague as good looking as Jon Hamm. Especially if he is a genuine person and easy to work with. January Jones has the best job in Hollywood as far as I'm concerned, getting paid well to be between the sheets with Jon,even if it is just make believe. We can speculate all we want about these 2 talented and Uber attractive actors. Hopefully it is a professional relationship only.
As far as the Emmy's go, it was way too long and having 5 reality hosts on stage made it suck even more. I only tuned in to see Mad Men win. I'm still miffed that Jon and John were bypassed, but there is always next year. And next year the women of Mad Men should get a nomination. They all do such fine work and deserve the recognition.
.....i noticed quite a few chignons, similar to the style betty sometimes wears.... apparently, according to the fashion police, "big hair" is out.
just curious if there a possible tie between the show and the re-appearance of that style....
I think that we all love this show sooo much that we want to dissect every little thing that happens or doesn't....let's hope it was nothing....cause I love them both (well maybe Jon just a little bit more....ok...a whole lot more..because he is soo sophisticated HOT)!!!!
Hi Maddicts! Did anyone else notice how great the actor who plays Sal looked? With apologies to Bryan Bratt (is that his name?) shame on me for not remembering.
His smile was from ear to ear!! He seemed soooo happy to be there. If it wasn't for Don Draper, Sal would be my fav.!
It did appear that the Mad Men men seemed quite thrilled to win. I felt the women had more of a somber look about them that night. I suppose it is a lot more pressured for the women - their gowns, their hair, their jewelery and their shoes. Everyone wants to know the designers of each and everything they are wearing. The men...nobody really cares what they are wearing. They just shave and shower and take off to the event. No pressure for them!
P.S. Hi, 60's child....Maybe Sal and my Dino were brothers in a different life! He did seem really happy at the Emmy's
Maybe the one surprise to me is that MadMen didn't put any of the actresses up for nomination. They were kind of shut out by the series, and I thought there were a couple of storylines/episodes that warranted a nomination (Betty in "Shoot", Rachel or Peggy).
Well just wait until next year. Our MM girls will have the category stacked!
Hey D&S: I remember your Dino's band. Dino, Desi and Billy, wasn't it?
.....Jon Hamm's look reminded me of Reservoir Dogs..... if you add the Ray-Ban Wayfarers...
Hi Drink &Smoke! So glad to see your post!
I never thought of it, but, you could be on to something there....
Dino = Italian, good looking, always seemed happy, whether naturally or beverage induced.
Sal = Italian, good looking, happy, and may have had a few bevs. before the show.
Hmmmm.....I would have to hear Dino and Sal do a duet of "Everybody Loves Somebody"!!
Hi Dry Manhattan!
I was also suprised to read that someone thought Elizabeth Moss was "Peggyish" on stage. I thought she looked beautiful, and was just standing off to one side to enjoy the moment, and to allow Matt as the Producer, to really take a bow.
I understand she also does live theater on Broadway, so I don't think she is type cast as Peggy.
She may also be a very quiet person.
Hi jamm54! I missed the actress who plays Rachel!
Does anyone out there know where a picture of the Mad Men winning ensemble on stage at the end of the Emmys could be seen?
Good memory on trivia, Laurie B. ;o) That was Dean Martin's son, Dean Paul Martin that was in that group! He went by Dino (just like his Dad) and it included Desi Arnaz Jr. and Billy Hinsche. Young Dean Paul died at 36 in a plane crash and his Dad (Dean Martin) never recovered from the loss. Talent sure seems to be hereditary. I think Tom Hanks son, Colin is doing a great job with Mad Men. Cheers to following in their Dad's footsteps!
@60'schild: You can go to the emmys.com site or just do a search on abc.com or google the emmys. Yep, Maggie was onstage with the rest of them which I thought was great! There might be a picture of all of them on the MadMen main site - haven't checked, myself.
DS: I didn't know he was that young when he died. Too bad......did he have any kids?
Yes, jamm54 Dean Paul had one son, Alexander. Everyone said that his father Dean Martin (Dino) took his death so hard that he had a difficult time performing on stage (nearly having nervous break downs on stage) and quickly gave it up all together. Dino was actually a great father to his seven children. His wives all said that he always kept his family first - always home for dinner no matter what. He never let life or work beat him down. That's why he is and always will be my favorite! Cheers! ;o)
Well, Drink & Smoker, he was one of my favorite actors as a kid. Very under-appreciated, I thought he was quite good. Liked him in "Some Came Running", "The Young Lions", "What A Way to Go", "Bells Are Ringing", "Rio Bravo", "5 Card Stud", "Texas Across the River" and "Ocean's Eleven". And his music and variety series, of course. Cheers, Dino!
I'd still like to have a picture of Betty from the end of the "Shoot" episode, in her nightie, ciggie hanging out of her mouth, BB gun aimed at the sky, looking up. What a classic shot! I don't even think they have it on the photos from the episodes. Too bad, it is absolutely one of the "classic" moments from Season 1.
In fact, it'd be a riot if they had a section for "classic moments" in each season or a section for Betty's classic moments (BB gun, vomiting, chair breaking, washing machine interlude). Betty has all the fun.
I'll drink to that jamm54! ;o) Betty has a naughty side to her that we only see once in awhile. I wonder if Kenmore sales are going to be up (no pun intended) from the washing machine episode?
D&S I'm sure you already have done this, being such a big DM fan, but if not, go look/listen to the "My Rifle, My Pony and Me" clip on YouTube...it's a great example of Dean's style, sound, even if it is corny. I put that same idea on some other of these forums for you...(know you can't read every post, me neither....we're all just too gabby! lol) If you haven't checked it out, though, Dino's in great voice in it...
60'schild, someone posted on here before to go to gettyimages.com and type in "mad men cast" in the search window...also check "editorial images" on the choices you want to come up...in the first and 2nd row of results there are a lot of cool pics of them winning (and Matt holding) the Emmys!!
I got the one with the "Emmys" backdrop for my desktop pic...cool...although I don't know how Vincent (standing right behind Christina) kept his eyes straight ahead at the camera!!
Scfan, I will definately go to YouTube and check it out! I love all the Dino info and appreciate you keeping me up to date. Cheers to you! ;o)
Just an aside, D&S, remember all those hilarious Dean & Jerry (Lewis) movies? I loved the one where they were driving in the convertible with "Mr. Bascomb" (a huge Great Dane) in the back seat...someone asked Jerry why they called him "Mr. Bascomb" and he said "We're scared not to" or something like that! They were funny funny funny! Dean was a great "straight man" but he had many funny moments of his own, too.
Scfan, I saw the video you mentioned and it is great! Dino sure knows how to sing, doesn't he? The Dean and Jerry Lewis combo was hilarious and they were a great team. I can really see Dean Martin and Roger Sterling as the perfect parellel being the "straight man". I can see Dean bumming a cigarette and never letting life beat him down - just like Roger. Thanks for the conversations on "the side". Cheers to you! ;o)
Hi guys! Thanks for the Emmy photo links!!
You're very welcome, D&S---I am bad about getting off topic but I can't help it! ha
60'schild, you're very welcome, too--I was just re posting someone else's post (about that getty images site)...it has some great pics, huh? which Emmy "group pic" did you like best? Wasn't it funny the way Vincent kept his eyes averted (from Christina's cleavage!) and looked straight at the camera??? That guy has will power!!
I'm also in the "get a life" category but I went back to watch the Emmys again and watched frame by frame when they won their award. Here's what I saw: When Tom Selleck announces that they won, Jon immediately looks back at his castmates, but doesn't look at his girlfriend. She looks at him adoringly the whole time. After several frames, Jon and January make eye contact very briefly, but it looks like she looks at him first. Eventually, after a very long time Jon turns back to his girlfriend and they hug.
When they are up on stage, Jon is next to January, but they are uncomfortably far away from each other. There is almost a two person space in between them. He has Elizabeth Moss on the other side of him. At one point, he gets closer to Elizabeth and they do a side hug and stay like that for a long time, now he is even farther away from January, there is big gap there. Eventually toward the very end of Matt Weiner's speech, Jon inches over to January and stands close to her, almost as if he remembered that she's his leading lady. They never make eye contact.
Also, I just looked in People Magazine and there is a picture of the entire cast. Interestingly enough, Jon is sitting on a stool with the entire cast around him and Elizabeth Moss in on his lap, while January Jones is of the to the side, next to Christina Hendricks.. THAT is very weird to me. Wouldn't it make sense to have January on Jon's lap and Elizabeth off to the side next to Christina? Yes, I know...get a life LOL
