Let's talk about the EMMYs !
Finally saw Jon Hamm - he's seated right behind Sally Field.
Not sure how I feel about this 5-Host thing .... but hopefully Jon, John & the entire show will win !

Saw Christina Hendricks on the red carpet-I thought the show made her bustier-nope! She's for real. She wore a lovely green gown-a great color for a redhead.
Roger wuz robbed! (though I thought Danson might win) At least Slattery got the hugest audience cheer when his name was announced!
John Slattery missed out on his category
Roger wuz robbed! (though I thought Danson might win) At least Slattery got the hugest audience cheer when his name was announced!
Well, this show thus far is miserably inept. The 5 host thing was lame and boring. Ricky Gervaise was funny - I love him. John Slattery - oh, Roger, how could they?!? You deserved that Emmy, John!
I totally agree Zerelda, w/the host thing & Ricky G. Loved Jeremy Piven't comment though ("What would happen if I just talked for 12 straight minutes? It's what the hosts did."
is that the only award so far...I just got home?
GriffJude - yep, just Roger/John Slattery. He lost to Zelzjko Ivanek (sp? - Damages). They've also had Comedy - Best Supp Actress (Jean Smart) & Best Supp Actor (Jeremy Piven). And Colbert Report won a writing award. So far, it's been very ho-hum ..... mostly because they've not had nearly enough on-camera shots of Jon Hamm!
Thanks so much for the update, Sharon!
geesh is this slow or what?
they are going to drag it out another hour

Mad Men
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (Pilot)
Yeah! Matthew!
So the award to Matthew Weiner is the fifth and hopefully not the last.
Wow, for some awards they go so fast I miss who won, but for others they just go on and on....This is a mess.
YAAY! MATTHEW! Did he win for the pilot (Smoke Gets In Your Eyes) - or for The Wheel?
Jon & John looked h-o-t!
they would've been better to air the show after the awards given it's on cable and they can do that, and get around the overage of time. lord knows they can re-run it all week and it would've gone far to air the newest one like 30 minutes after the awards end.
Sleeping with the Emmy - CONGRATS MATT!
I'm on the west coast, where it's happening, but it's not on yet!! Is Jon Hamm married? Does anybody have a bio website on him? If I could only get into the after-parties...boo hoo!
OH NOOOOO!!!!
Good for AMC, but wrong guy! I can't get into Breaking Bad .... ah well, one more major, I think: Best Drama. Here's hopin' ....
Someone should have told Mary Tyler Moore to wear sleeves...
Finally!
ALLRIIIIIIIIGHT!!!! BEST DRAMA!!
WOOHOO!
Now maybe more people will watch. Goodnight everyone!
Jon Hamm's longtime girlfriend is Jennifer Westfeldt, the actress and writer best known for writing and starring in "Kissing Jessica Stein". She actually wrote a role for Jon Hamm who played opposite - in an alomost unrecognizable role!
ALLRIIIIIIIIGHT!!!! BEST DRAMA!!
Hurray! I was a little worried it wouldn't happen, but it did! This makes waiting for the new episode next week somewhat easier.
I'm also thrilled about the writing award. I would have thought "The Wheel" would have won over "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" though.
I can't believe the show won best drama. I love the show and am trying to spread the word but I was afraid not enough people know about it
3 words -
BRYAN FRIGGIN CRANSTON????
Didn't see that one coming. Hamm (and Michael C. Hall) was robbed. I am disgusted. I've seen Breaking Bad and quite frankly I don;t get it.
Happy about JOHN ADAMS though.
And the political commentary just totally turns me off. STFU!!!!!
Congratulations Mad Men team on your Emmy for best drama. This is the only show I make a point to watch every week and I'm glad the Academy agrees.
Congrats MM on winning best dramatic series! Makes the other non-wins more acceptable. Also congrats to Bryan Cranston. If it couldn't be Jon Hamm, glad it was for Cranston's outstanding performance in Breaking Bad. Overall, it was a good night for AMC.
So I kind of watched the show, needed to help my daughter with anatomy. Did John Hamm win?
Yippee!!! MM rocks!
Political commentaries ~~~ p-u!
Poor Mary. :-(
I guess Hamm didnt win, MHCGRL, I agree with you I loved the wheel. It still my favorite episode.
Well, I was hoping for a MAD MEN evening ... turns out, it was mostly about 30 Rock. Ah well, Best Drama & other writing awards - I'll take it!
Plus, we've been able to enjoy OUR favorite show for weeks - and a new episode next Sunday! Most other network shows won't be starting for another week or two (or in the case of 30 Rock, 5 wks!).
I can't stand any network shows. UGH.
Thank Heavens for MM on AMC!
Have you guys watched "Breaking Bad"? It's a really good show and Bryan Cranston is really great.I know I will be beat to death for this comment, but John Hamm [as much as I love him] can be a one note guy at times. He's our St.Louis hero. But if anyone was going to beat him it had to be Bryan.I'm still bummed ,though.
I was so happy, I actually cried!!! Well, this is my favorite show. No one deserved to win more. So So HAPPY!!!!!!
Best Writing, without a doubt. Best Drama, of course. Well, thank God. Thank God someone, somewhere can recognize excellence at it's best - they must have been looking the other way for John & Jon's category... They will win next year, or the year after ... They're too good not to.
Congrats You Guys!!!!
I agree. Hamm was robbed but I'm happy for the outstanding drama win.
On the emmy show, the person accepting the award for MM best drama mentioned David Chase - the creator lead writer of the Sopranos. How is/was Chase associated with Mad Men? I noticed some similarities in Mad Men and the Sopranos (quality of writing, the look of the show etc.)
I just started watching this season and rented the season 1 dvd's to catch up.
Matthew Weiner Mad Men genuis was a producer/writer/whatever for The Sopranos
He was Chase's right hand man
Jersey - from one Jersey Girl to another, Matt Weiner worked as co-executive producer with Chase on Sopranos which is why you see the similarities and there are tons of them. I first took notice of these when I realized that the statues in the office of Betty's shrink bore a remarkable resemblance to Jennifer Melfi's office statues (since other than Tony and Dr. Melfi it was a VERY spartan set.)
You guys are great!
Today we spent the whole day moving into a new house.
At last I have my own studio set-up again.
The rest of the family is sleeping, so I come on line to get the scoop! Good thing the dish gets set-up tomorrow.
I am so glad that MM won best drama.
If only mainstream TV could deliver the goods like this!
Keep those updates coming!
Oh thanks for giving me the scoop re Matt Weiner and David Chase. Now it makes sense. The show (MM) is really great. I'm hooked.
Hyperboliz, I love your little pic. It's a Barbie doll isn't it? I'm gonna have to figure out how to put one of those pics up next to my post too.
I love, love, love this show!!! When it won Best Drama I screamed and startled my daughter! Way to go to the whole cast and crew!
So happy to see that MM got best drama! Way to go! Sorry to see that Hamm and Slattery didn't get theirs too. I have a feeling that there will be a lot more nominations and wins next year as the series gains popularity. More and more people I talk to are tuning in. I was at a party last night where a lot of people were talking about the show and love it! Can't wait until next week!
so what happened with the other 13 emmy nomination we didn't see, did they win any others beside best writing and best drama? they were up for 16, what happened with the rest?
Well, sorry Jon Hamm lost but Bryan Cranston totally deserves the award. He is quite amazing in "Breaking Bad." Come on, folks, it could have gone to the "House" guy!
As for political commentary on the show, I say right on!
What the hell is wrong with the way this forum is set up? You can enter a comment and it can very often pop up out of order of the way you entered it in relation to the other posters. It's frustrating because if you happen to have the same view or comment as someone else it looks like you are just repeating their thoughts. As it looks like I did above. I promise I wrote the exact same comment and when it got posted it seemed like I had just reiterated Grinandbearit's comment. This has happened more than once. P.S. Did they announce Don's category right at the beginning of the show? I didn't get to see it.
jerseygirl- go to your profile and it gives you an option to add a picture. If you save a pic you want you just click on browse, find the file and then open it. Ta-da- there's your picture. I got mine from photobucket.com
If you have a teenager in the house, have him or her help you. They know this stuff better than most of us because they do it all of the time on My Space and Facebook!
Hey, what was January Jones wearing? I thought Christina Hendricks and Moss looked great. I loved Christina's dress. It was great to see "Peggy" not in character!
Congrats to Matthew and Co. Now the whole world knows what all us Maddicts have known since the very start.. Mad Men Rules!
Oh...didn't Christina H. look great in her green dress??? That should stop all the comments about her being "fat" (nope, just shapely and stacked!) and "padded on top" (ahem...I repeat...didn't Christina H. look great in her green dress???)----- that cleavage speaks for itself...my girl crush on "Joan" continues....
Even if they didn't win........... : - ( ............
Jon and John sure looked great!!!!
I saw her on the pre-show and thought the same thing!! Everything else looked so great!
One more comment---anybody notice how good Robert Morse looked? He stood there behind M. Weiner with all the gang and he had that same impish expression on his face as when he was in "How to Succeed ..." and "The Loved One"--it was so cool seeing all of them march up there...I wanted to hug every one of them! I loved the expressions on Jon Hamm's and John Slattery's faces as they watched Matthew win that first award--it was so endearing and sweet, they were so happy for him...as all of us are....goodnight all and MAD MEN FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Screamed, hollered, jumped up and down with joy for the Mad Men win at the end!! I don't remember the last time I was so excited for a show or the actors to win awards! I wanted a Mad Men Sweep!
BEST BEST BEST show on televison!!! I know I'm responsible for at least 7 people tuning in to it and they're bringing more people on to watch.
Hamm & Slattery certainly deserved to win! Chins up guys! Keep up the good work. Hamm is the best-looking man on television. Everyone looked fabulous!
I can't get into Breaking Bad. I've tried.
Well, I knew they would find a way to spout their political comments. What was the significance of having Oprah there? Just asking.
....mentioned this before, but the Mad Men comments section has been having a time-stamp problem, so some of the posts end up posting backward in time......
....should someone start an open thread for the week, in spite of no new episode?
scfan, you are the famous one this month - maybe you should do it.....
....by the way, can i get your autograph?
Congratulations to a well deserved win to the cast and crew! The emmy show itself was so tortuous and so few of my favorites were getting the awards, I was nervous, so am very glad MM won. Christina looked terrific as did all of the ladies and gents of MM.
am I the only one who enjoyed the emmy show ... the tall blonde model Heidi Klum wow she is sooooo tall she towered over the others I think she is adorable
Howie Mandel is annoying he uses the same shtick as Ellen Degenerus ... or vice versa he came on the scene first I like him and she in small doses the only mad men actors I saw were jon hamm in the audience and christina hendricks on the red carpet
I think Bryan Cranston deserved to win and am not such a fan of breaking bad but loved him in other things he is such a great comedic actor probably the best since dick van dyke!
I've tried to get into Breakng Bad also and quite frankly it stinks. You want a show about drugs check out WEEDS - still love that show
I think I saw "Rachel" in the group on stage, I'll have to look for a photo of that moment. "Peggy" looked beautiful, but I didn't see "Betty"...know she was there..they camera just moved so fast. And "Peggy" was standing at the edge and by herself, so easy to see...just like Peggy does. :)
Scfan - Back to political comments - I was sooo enthralled by JOHN ADAMS. We sat down as a family and watched it and we all read the book after. We truly gained a knowledge and appreciation for our Founding Fathers (compare them to our current so called leaders on all sides who are an embarrassment) The acting was absolutely out of this world and Giamatti and Linney deserve OSCARS and even though I like Tom Wilkenson I was rooting for Stephen Dillane who played Thomas Jefferson. But what pissed me off is that EVERYONE (including Tom Hanks) when accepting this award had something snippy and elistist to say. If these nimrods TRULY understood what John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were about (as portrayed in the book) they would know that Adams and Jefferson, while polar opposites politically, DETESTED the partison bickering and RESPECTED each other and were intelligent in their arguements. (They also predicted this kind of political atmosphere we have in our country today) Sorry if I am ranting here - wish I could find an HBO site or something to vent. It truly put a damper on the show for me because I was looking forward to JOHN ADAMS as much as MAD MEN. I was going to buy JOHN ADAMS and MAD MEN DVD's as x-mas gifts for friends/family but JOHN ADAMS is now off my shopping list.

A little FYI, Mad Men also won for Main Title Design, Hairstyling, but more importantly the two i wanted, besides the obvious of course, also for Outstanding Cinemetography and Outstanding Art Direction.
To me those last two are important because they're every part of what makes the show what it is as much as everything else. You don't see a whole lot of visual artistry on television, but Mad Men is shot terrific.
I can't stand watching award shows (too many bad jokes and celebrities who don't want to get off the stage) but for Mad Men I watched half of the emmys. I'm glad they won but I was getting worried because I thought they would have won more awards. I was sorry to see that the camera avoided most of the stars (January Jones, Pete etc) I saw more of Jon Hamms girlfriend/wife? who looked as if she was going to get up and go on stage with them.
....hi nancy - new pic - hilarious! awards shows often run over, so i always DVR the program after just to be safe....haven't seen it yet (we were entertaining) so now i'm behind...
lorantscan, et al. - i ditto you all about the politics. it just taints an otherwise delightful and entertaining evening. my first abrupt introduction to that was in 1978 when Vanessa Redgrave let loose with a stream of vitriol. i had no idea what she was talking about - i was too young - but i knew it was ugly and brutal, and shockingly out of place.
it's not that i agree or disagree - politics are crude, and brutal, and dog-eat-dog. a light, happy, celebratory (and very expensive) gathering is NOT the place. it's just bad bad manners.
personally, i think it's incredibly arrogant and disrespectful of all the people who are there to be awarded and honored, and the huge crew who work all year to make that happen.
it's NOT a personal platform..... would you go to a house party, bash the DJ over the head, grab the mike, and start spewing? these people work all year for the chance to compete for these nominations. it's a big slap in the face, if you ask me. as Betty would say, it's "ugly, and crude."
JMHO (i am so glad they invented that or i'd be covered in rotten vegetables all the time!)
greg....let's see, as far as the Emmys, there's primetime, daytime, news and documentary and creative arts....did i leave anything out? some of the Emmy wins for Mad Men occurred during the Creative Arts Emmys a few days ago....
i had some other, non-Emmy stuff to post - should i do that here or would someone rather start a new thread? does it matter?
A toast to Mad Men and their outstanding drama win at the Emmy's!! Cheers! ;o) I felt like Mad Men was the stealth horse coming from behind and making the win right before the finish line! We are up for a stellar season with new viewers who are scratching their heads, saying "Why haven't I been watching THAT show?". Thank you Emmy judges for knowing brillance when you see it.
.....THE POSTS ARE STILL POSTING OUT OF ORDER..... however the time stamp part is correct....
Laurie B. - don't answer if you don't want, but are you East or West coast? i posted AFTER your 12:44 post.
my post JUST NOW says 11:15 am EST, which is correct (i'm not on the east coast), but yours says 12:44 pm. how is that possible??
we are all on the east coast time right??
technical - help please......
I can't believe that Jon Hamm and John Slattery didn't win! But it is awesome that the show won for best drama!
....oh lorantscan i meant to ditto you in a big way about John Adams - i've seen your ongoing posts and i couldn't agree more with every one of them.
.....lorantscan (i'm like "ten-second tom" today!) love Weeds also, but kind of lost interest at her ever-growing sluttiness. business is one thing - acting like a big ho is another....still watch though.
First of all, I was thrilled that Mad Men won best drama. I'm hooked on it! I would have loved Jon and John to win, too, but there were a lot of competitors (whose shows I haven't watched yet).
Am I the only one who thought that January Jones looked as if she had an undergarment on and had forgotten to put on her dress?
I am anxious to see what happens to the Draper marriage. Don is such an interesting mixture of good guy and snake, and I'm still waiting for more info on his mysterious past.
To the powers-that-be at AMC.
Next year, please air a fresh MadMen during the Emmy Broadcast. The Emmy Broadcast was just AWFUL and I would have preferred watching a fresh MadMen instead of the banality that was putrifying the airwaves last night.
Congratulations on your well-deserved win!
Doug

HOW DID I MISS THIS??????
I got a phone call at 10:45 from a very good friend and we were yacking away - I had the emmys on and I guess when 30 Rock got it I thought that was the last award and turned it off. ARGH!!!
I've looked but can't find the actual acceptance on line. I found a montage of acceptance speeches and Mad Men is in it, but has anyone found the full Mad Moment online? I really want to see it!
Matthew - I loved when your name was called and you waited to see for which episode before you kissed your wife! Personally I thought "The Wheel" was better, but either way - CONGRATS!!!!
Maddict Land is pretty happy today!
I loved J. Jones' hair, but I agree her dress, from what I could see in the picture, does look like an undergarment. I saw an up close shot of her head, and her hair and makeup were lovely. She has narrow diamond bands running through her hair. Very pretty.
I am looking for some closer shots of the other women so I can see how they looked, although I am sure they are gorgeous.
Jon Hamm should have won, just goes to show, the insiders can't stand that he's gorgeous and immensely talented. Sour grapes, yes!
CONGRATULATIONS MAD MEN ON THE 6 EMMY WINS! YAY!
I knew you would win, because Mad Men stands out, and above all the rest!
Great cast, great crew, great writing etc.
CONGRATULATIONS MAD MEN! YAY!
Lorantscan & SCFan : I'm with you.... can't stand these people who get up there and make their political commentary as if the fact that they're entertainers makes their opinions more valid or worth listening to. It's like politicians giving their conventions speeches and oh by the way, critiquing various acting performances while they're at it. Can you imagine??
Say "thank you" and other than that, STFU!
Lorantscan: Having enjoyed John Adams (which I didn't see because I cancelled HBO after The Sopranos went off), you might want to Google PBS videos for a wonderful program that was on several years ago about the lives of our forefathers in which John Adams and his wife were included. I remember enjoying it tremendously.
When Mad Men won at the very end, I stood up and clapped for 5 minutes. I got very emotional.
I'm West coast this month, and couldn't wait til 9pm to watch it, had to go out. But got back just in time to see Jon not get the award, but I was already upset from reading the posts, so no shock, only sadness. But when best drama won, couldn't be better-CONGRATULATIONS MADMEN! Glad I didn't see all of the political bs. Peggy looked fabulous! Agree bout Jan's dress, but she is striking, kind of Stepford-ish, especially in the last episode. Somebody brought up Robert Morse-is he a producer? I've always liked him. Laurie B.-I always like your straight-on comments. What torture to be in Hollywood, and not go to the Emmy parties-industry only!
I also loved John Adams...and was thinking last night how much liking it goes along with liking MM instead of taking away from either shows. Writing, costumes, time correctness, acting...both shows have it all. A favorite scene in John Adams was near the end when Adams saw the painting most recognized as how it was at the presentation of the Declaration of Independence and Adams stated that it was so false, since they couldn't even all be in the same room at the same time. Most of us were taught from a textbook that had that painting heading the chapter on the Revolution.
Yup, LaurieB, Elisabeth looked great! Christina was gorgeous. Jan just forgot to put on her dress! (It's 1:06 here in Atlanta--let's see what time comes up on this post)
The time stamps on these posts are wacky!
I was replying to LaurieB's comment about the fashions, which shows up as 2:32 p.m., but my reply is shown BEFORE her post.
Christinab: Tell your cousin, "good job!"
....Laurie B. thanks for the link - believe it or not, i haven't seen the Emmys, or the Red Carpet or any of it yet.
i don't hate JJ's dress.....it is a witty allusion to the Maidenform episode, but it definitely doesn't do her justice. plus, we've already seen her in a black merry widow (without the skirt)!
haven't seen absolutely everything out there, but i think i will be very surprised if JJ, and any of the women, doesn't get a nomination for Season Two.
...............WOW - IT'S 1:28 EST, AND LOOK AT THE CRAZY POST TIMES ALL AROUND THIS ENTRY.
I agree with you cristina! Tadashi is one of my favorite designers by far and she looked absolutely stunning. I did love January's dress in number 7, that blue was perfect for her hair/eyes/skin color.
CONGRATS Mad Men, for receiving the credit WE have all known you deserve for the past year or so!
I'm EAST COAST and it's only 11:35 am right now so how could it be 12:44 pm on my post? I posted that around 10am. It's all screwed up again.
I'm so glad so many Maddicts tuned in to watch the Emmys last night!
I'm disappointed that Jon & John didn't win, but the Best Drama makes up for it ... at least this year. Hopefully there's more Mad Men in the Emmys for years to come.
Overall, I'm just glad the Emmys are catching up to what WE are watching. Ever since The Sopranos (hard to ignore!), they've been acknowledging the amazing shows on NON-Network (not abc/cbs/nbc) programming. HBO was at the forefront, then Showtime ... and now those 2, along with FX, TNT, USA are getting the majority of Emmy nominations. Couple that with the public's (hopefully) waning interest in Reality TV .... well, who knows if or when the Big 3 will ever wake up & smell the coffee. At least they're trying w/shows like Grey's Anatomy (which I'm not a fan of, but some of my friends love --- whatever --- Mad Men doesn't need ER explosions to get interest!), but still, they're falling behind. And, despite last night's blip, remember: we get all of our new episodes in a row. That never happens w/Desparate Housewives! Their seasons are always interrupted, stretched out beyond belief ... then there are those "sweeps" when you know there's going to be a tornado or plane crash or something.
I've never seen 30 Rock, but I hear it's excellent -- and it's on NBC. Good for them. The thing that continually stumps me though is WHY are shows like Two & A Half Men continually nominated?? Take out those clowns, and you'd have some available nominee slots for Flight of the Conchords, Entourage, etc.
But I digress .... Thanks everyone for making this such a lively & enjoyable thread! Despite differing opinions on political commentaries, hosting abilities (let's hope they do it different next year!) & whatnot, the bottom line is .... we love our show, and it seems the Emmy voters do too (not that we needed their validation!).
NEW EPISODE of this year's EMMY-WINNING BEST DRAMA next Sunday!!
O.K., just saw another full length picture of J.Jones' dress - it is a "Dolce and Gabbana lingerie inspired corset dress" according to the blurb under the picture. To me it just looked like she forgot to put her real "goin' to the Emmys" dress on. Her hair and makeup looked lovely, though. Oh, and they said she was wearing $1 million plus in diamonds.
Re: Cristina/Joan, I did not like her dress - too much accent on the cleavage. Maybe it looked better in person.
How did you all like January Jones' dress? IMHO without that little skirting at the bottom it would have looked like a Maidenform long-line. Check it out here:

January Jones dress
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thedishrag/2008/09/mad-mens-januar.html
Now,Dry, I already gave you my autograph and warned you not to sell it on Ebay...whazzamatter...did you do it anyway and now you want another one??? (I bet you got all of 3 cents..maybe 2) Here (hands over paper with a huge "X" on it) now don't sell that one, OK?????
I think our Frumpy Peggy had the best dress of the whole night. V.v. sexy, Preggy. Well done!
Mine says 12:57pm and it's only 11:31am now. I think I posted that at 9:57am. Who knows? Does anybody know if Hamm was interviewed on either E's red carpet or TV Guide's? It's all rerunning today and I want to catch him if he was.
Laurie B., thanks for the links..I agree that January is too beautiful for that undergarment-looking dress. Elisabeth's was the best one--after Christina's smashing green number...and why shouldn't it be low cut...when ya got it....!
Oh, lorantscan, why was my name at the start of your John Adams post? Hey, I liked it, too!
But, I am one of the posters who does NOT like the political comments by entertainers. I just think it's out of place. I happen to think they are "for" whichever candidat/issue they think can indirectly sell the most tickets for them to their movies. JMHO
UrbanExplorer, I have a feeling we have not seen the last of Rachel/Maggie! let's hope....
My cousin works for Tadashi and helped design Christina Hendricks' dress...Didn't she just look STUNNING??!!! Love her, Love Mad Men...and CONGRATS for winning the biggest award of the night...BEST DRAMA!!!!!!!!!
I love January Jones and her style, but her Emmy's dress didn't do her justice. She is much too beautiful for that dress, I believe. I think she has looked better in some of the episodes, like number 7, where she wears that blue dress.
Bryan Cranston deserves the award I think. Unfortunately, Breaking Bad has been on repeats for a long time so I'll need to pick it up again. For those of us without HBO or Showtime we'll have to see "Dexter" and "In Treatment" on DVD, which I do with Dexter. Fewer people are familiar with them. For "House" fans, sometime check out Hugh Laurie in his pre-House days when he was a comedy team with Stephen Fry (BBC "A Bit of Fry and Laurie") Most people don't know he's so funny, and also a good musician. But Mad Men remains my favorite fix of the week. Glad to hear there are still five episodes.
Christina looked really beautiful; her gown and her hair complimented each other perfectly. But....did anyone see that big hunka sumpin' she had escorting her? Was that her signifigant other? He sure looked like he could handle her, too. Tall dark and handsome!...
The Mad Men cast looked stunning! You can view images of them during the Emmys at www.gettyimages.com. Just search under editorial images.
Also, that was Maggie Siff with the cast. When the winner was announced she was sitting next to Bryan Batt/Salvatore during the ceremony and she's standing right next to Matt Weiner during the speech. Bet she wishes she was still a regular on the Emmy Award-winning show...
I must really love Mad Men and Jon Hamm because I wasted 3 hours of my life I can't get back on a pitiful awards show just to see a glimpse of him and them to win the much deserved best drama award. Some of those speeches were too self righteous for my own good. Oh and what was with Glenn Close shoving her award on America to hold?? What's the matter? She can't hold her award and talk at the same time? Next time Glenn put your thank you's on an index card.
Yay for the Mad Men cast, writers, etc...Well done!!!!
Tracy, I echo your sentiments, though I didn't see the Glen Close thang. You're right, the entire show was really horrible, but I was so heartened to see Mad Men get the recognition it deserves.
Dry Manhattan and the rest - thanks for listening to my rant on JOHN ADAMS and the political snippyness at the EMMYS- found a site to dish about it.
ALERT!!
You can hear Terry Gross talking to Matthew W jon H and John S right now at wnyc.org
The emmys sucked big time!!! The hosts were horrible.
I loved seeing Mad Men win whatever they could. You guys deserved everything.
I loved seeing all of the characters in their real clothes.
I loved J jones' dress, Peggy was astonishing. The men were so handsome!!!
Jon Hamm rocks! John S. always looks amazing.
Christina was so beautiful. The SC boys were almost unrecognizable. All adorable.
I am very happy that MM won stuff, especially writing and cinematography. This HAD TO HAPPEN, for me.
I loved Brian Cranston. He did do so well!
We are supported in our love for this program. The awards did confirm this.
That was a downright painful awards show. Spent most of the show doing other things with one ear tuned for Mad Men wins.
It seemed very political. Alright already, we know what most of you think. Don't wanna hear it, period. Thought the MM cast looked great, for the most part. Ya, put some sleeves on Mary Tyler Moore's dress...
Sharon: I agree with you about some of those shows/people. For example, why do we have to keep seeing and hearing from Debra Messing. Talk about overrated in talent and looks. If she wasn't famous nobody'd look twice at her on the street.
As for Two and a Half Men... hysterical, but the one that deserves an award for that is the kid. He cracks me up.
So I see my last post says 5:47 pm when it was really 3:46 when I typed it. Some time zone in the middle of the Atlantic I suppose.
Why is nobody bothered by the fact that the insanely incredible acting talent of the women of this show was acknowladged?!?! Do you guys not think that Peggy, or Don's wife, or could be Best Supporting Actress? Althought I do think the woman from In treatment is fab., at the VERY min. they should've been nominated! Some of Don's lover's could have made pretty good Guest Appereance Nominee's also.
I think out of all the women of Mad Men, Joan (Christina) by far is the best actress. She is definately Emmy worthy. Christina has the Jon Hamm approach that a few words and a look can send the message home! I can see her in the running next year. ;o)
I am a huge huge fan of Mad Men-fell in love last summer. I thought I was the only one who saw it, I use to ask everyone -and then i discovered this site, great to read all the interesting comments. I agree with Tracy about- Glen Close. Almost turned off the TV -disgusted with these people who feel this is their personal podium to air their views-
What was January wearing- not the most becoming for her-she could have done better. Looking forward to Season 3.
……… Time Stamp – it seems that a few selected people’s posts are somehow being interpreted by the AMC server as two hours later than the EST we are all, east or west coast, uniformly going by…..
….which is why some of the replies, which ARE correctly labeled, are being posted above the original post.
It reminds me of when Clayton Neuman posts an Episode Open Thread. If you’ve ever looked, the “expiration” for each one is around the same time as the start of the next week’s Episode on Sunday nights….
No other threads posted can appear above it until after that expiration date and time.
Just wondering if the same mechanism that allows him to “time out” his posts is somehow the same thing causing some peoples’ posts to be mislabeled as two hours later than the actual post time.
Laurie B., lorantscan, scfan – like one or more of you, I’m a political junkie also – I just think it’s rude to foist those opinions on a captive audience. Politics (like sex and money) isn’t something you discuss with just anyone…. It’s a sticky wicket with lots of hot buttons and half the people don't bother to educate themselves anyway before spouting their opinions.
Wasthere – I could really picture John Adams making it to A&E or Bravo or whatever, after its run on HBO….. if they put the Sopranos on A&E, then surely they will put John Adams out there for wider consumption…
Sharon - great post on the Tee Vee biz…..
I’ve been waiting my entire life for Tee Vee this good. I’d be very curious to know at which point each person here got on the “intelligent Tee Vee” wagon….
Which non-network series grabbed you first and why?
Scfan – did you forget your CRS medicine again? that was Dry MARTINI you gave the big “X” to. she made a killing and got three and a half cents for it.
oh, and who you callin’ “dry?”
still haven’t seen the broadcast, but it sounds like I’d better have a cocktail in my hand when I do.
Susanne and everyone else who rooted for something or someone other than Mad Men – get in line for your spankings....(heh heh.)
…..and LILYB, we are all up in arms about the women being ignored. I can’t pick a favorite. I’ve gone round and round. now that the series has everyone's attention, i do believe there will be one or more nominations next year for the ladies.
predictions, anyone?
Like you said - upon repeated viewings after the emotion has dampened, I’ve even come to appreciate the acting of Melinda Mcgraw (Bobbi) and other characters.
Like someone (was it zerelda?) said, the women in this thing are doing some HEAVY lifting.
Honestly, I don’t think I’ve seen a single bad performance by anyone on this show…. And I’m pretty picky.
Outisde of my MadMen praises, I usually get a good cry out of the 'people that passed' montage. But whoever the music director was, and the editor, should be fired! There were no applauses as there usually are between the names, and the clips were stupid! Especially with all of the real Hollywood heroes that died. I'll have to await the Academy's for that cry!
This Emmy show was so bad it made People's Choice look like Masterpiece Theater.
The reality-host idea was just part of CBS' constant plugging of its reality genre. Seemed like every commercial break had the tease about "who will win as best reality host?"
So ironic that the people who represent the single worst thing ever to happen to TV were elevated to this status on a TV awards show.
On the other hand, CBS is just paying attention to its ratings. "Reality" is big ratings.
But the moronic patter between those 5 nobodies just provesd once again: yes indeed, reality shows DO have scripts.
The one bright spot: all the political commentary, although not nearly enough of it.
Normally, I don't appreciate people making political comments at awards shows - I think it's crass. However, because this election is so important and will be soooooo close, I didn't feel as offended by the political comments. However, I didn't watch the entire show, either.
I thought Matthew Weiner's acceptance speeches were excellent and I'm glad he won for the pilot, although I loved "The Wheel" episode as well.
Since I've watched the show from the first airing and fell for it right away, I was surprised to find that it doesn't have a larger audience. The Emmy is sure to change that.
I didn't get to see the ladies arriving on the red carpet, so I can't comment on their dresses. Did a good look at Jon Hamm nad the beautiful woman with him - a stunning couple.
Choppin47 - I understand what you are saying but please go back and read my original post on this. It was a disservice to JOHN ADAMS that was my point. Also, FYI - this election is no more important than any other in our history
Just got home after being out of town all weekend - but of course I caught the Emmys last night! Over all, a mixed bag and some disappointments with the awards ceremony.
1) I don't know what the network was thinking having 5 hosts, but it was obvious from the start that it was a BAD idea. Sometimes when you have that many people on one job, no one takes responsibility, and that's what happened. They should have had Jimmy Kimmel host - his pre-Emmy special was frikken' hilarious!
2) Too much wasted time for 3 hours. I know that it was the 60th, and they wanted to reminisce, but there is such a thing as too much (too much Mr. Rickles, too many classic show sets, etc.) They had to cut a lot of bits that might have been really funny and redeemed the wasted time, but they were so focused on not going overtime that the just made the 3 hours feel rushed, messy, and discombobulated.
3) Some really worthwhile shows got their due and won awards ... namely, our MM. It would have been nice to get acting awards, but the competition was so fierce that all of the nominees deserved it. The awards that MM did win cement it as a quality show and hopefully will attract new viewers so we can enjoy it for a long time.
.....lorantscan vs. chopin47..........
whee doggies!
i'm not touching that one with a ten foot pole.
All the comments about Mary Tyler Moore's pitiful looking arms cracked me up! Aside from a few chuckles, I though the show was slow and boring.
What was with Tommy Smothers anyway? What a disappointing appearance! He used to be so funny!
I tuned in with high hopes and found myself astounded at the lameness of the show! If I had not been so emotionally involved about MM's nominations, I would not have kept it on.
January's hair was fabulous but I just hated her dress! She could have been queen of the ball, but now people will only remember the controversial style of her gown..
I had just about had enough of Don Rickles until he said the lines, "My wife, when I first met her, said 'You'll never get ahead in show business being a smart ass. Now she's sitting on the sand in Malibu sigaling ships with her jewelry!' " One of the funniest things I have ever heard!
The best moment of the night was Jon and his gal on the red carpet. He had his arm around her and just kept squeezing and squeezing as if to say, "Isn't this the greatest?" It was obvious to me that he really cherishes her and appreciates the good fortune rhat has rewarded his talent.
I WOULD LIKE TO START A NEW POST.Yes,I am screaming. Can't find the place,.It wass there yesterday. it took forever for me to get on talk tonight...grrrr....... I just wanted to say HURRAY! because there will be a MADMEN marathon of the last eight episodes on Thursday starting at
4:00 PM EST I am so excited!!!! I might take notes! By the way i just previewed this post...and I am in the central time zoneandit is postingalright. There is almost as much talk about the time as there are about the Emmys. I went back and forth between th Emmy's and Madmen. Isn't that what the remote is for?
...Sandy, i am absolutely screaming!
....sorry nmkay.....like some of us, your monitor is not properly displaying the "Title" and "Body" fields....
just surf to "Talk," then hit "Refresh" on your browser's tool bar....
the "Title" and "Body fields should manifest....
The other funny moment of the night was Josh Groben's rendition of about 30 different classic TV theme songs. By the time he got to the theme of "South Park", I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. I never knew he could do anything besides an Italian aria!
The rest of it (save our MM wins) was pretty crappy. I needed at least 3 glasses of wine to get through the telecast - it almost made Rickles bearable ... almost.
I'm having total Mad Men withdrawal symptoms!! Can't wait until this coming Sunday. AMC please don't do this to me again. :/
What are we going to do when the season is over in a few weeks? I wish they'd make the season longer. A lot of shows have 20-22 episode seasons, and 13 episodes is considered a 1/2 or short season. I think the Emmy warrants it. :)
Emmys for 30 Rock? Clevelandrocks thinks not! Hey Hamm, you're the man!
....came across an interesting article about AMC's marketing strategy concerning Mad Men and Breaking Bad.....
http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2008/09/emmy-winners-ne.html
Saw Jon Hamm being interviewed for TV Guide by Lisa what a class act he kissed her hand! He and Lee Pace of Pushing Daises were the two best of the entire night. Don and Ned totally rocked it!
So SofiaKate: There should be MORE political commentary? I suppose so, as long as they're saying what you want to hear. I still say it's a boorish thing to do at an awards show.
GailKlein: HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!!!
Hanna: I agree. Josh Groban really impressed me with his witty rendition of the medley he did. The South Park one cracked me up as well. He is quite a talent. Do you remember how he got noticed? He was a guest on Ally McBeal? He played a h.s. boy who wanted to sue the girl who changed her mind about going to prom with him. He had a song he wanted to do for her professing his undying love for her. It was a great show and people were shocked to hear him sing. That propelled him to the stardom he deserves now.
I loved loved LOVED seeing Jon Hamm on the red carpet - his interview wasn't long enough. His live in girlfriend is gorgeous and the way she looked at him. Whoa! Lucky woman! The show was too long and boring and I FF thru a lot of it. I enjoyed Tommy Smothers, though and thought he WAS funny..
Somone mentioned that Jan Jones's dress was an ironic tribute to the "Maidenform" episode. That made me laugh, and if it was, I commend JJ.- clever! (but still don't like the dress much). Never did catch a glimpse of Ms Ross ("Peggy"). And Yes Pace and Hamm were the two most elegant, handsomest men on the carpet.
Laurie B.: I think it also helped that Oprah had him on her show as well early on in his career (she's friends with his producer, David Foster). He's great - what a voice! I'm glad to see he has a sense of humor too.
If someone has already posted this, I apologize but, I think I read somewhere that Josh Groban and January Jones used to date for a while, now broken up, though. I liked his TV theme songs bit, too---he's cute and very talented.
Anybody know who JJ's with now? On some other thread there has been posting to the effect that maybe she and Jon Hamm are getting it on behind the scenes...could that be true???? Well, there's a big difference in having a "live-in" (partner--or whatever they're calling it this week) and having a wife.
I say go for it, January---he ain't married...yet!
Hey Laurie B., I remember his appearance on Ally McBeal as well...as I used to be obsessed with that show during its time...(maybe more obsessed with Robert Downy Jr.) but anyway, I am also glad Josh Groban has made it this far...slow but steady...that's the way to last!
A well deserved award to simply the best show on television. The superior acting of Mad Men puts this show on a whole other level. Hopefully more people will begin to recognize the greatness of this show.

I dont think Jon Hamm and January Jones are doing the naughty busniess behind the scenes. He looked incredibly happy with his girlfriend actress/writer Jennifer Westfield. January has said that Jon is very intimidiating and very handsome and of course very nice to her on the set, but she also mentioned Jennifer is one lucky girl! January Jones doesnt seem like the type who would break up a close relationship they have.
All's fair in love and war!
I’m with Polignac; let's not let our imaginations run away with us! I don't think people should read too much into how two actors/coworkers act around each other off-set. We don't really know them or their relationship. Rumors that end up in gossip columns often start in blogs nowadays, and it's often incorrect. It's pure speculation with a healthy dose of wishful thinking, and it's not necessary. I like to watch entertainment news shows and learn about actors as much as any fan, but you have to take what's said (and speculated) about them with a grain of salt, IMHO.

Choppin47 - I understand what you are saying but please go back and read my original post on this. It was a disservice to JOHN ADAMS that was my point. Also, FYI - this election is no more important than any other in our histor
Lorantscan, my comment was not directed at or to you nor inspired by your post. I was merely saying I was expecting political comments because that's been the trend and everyone has something to say about this election. Celebrities have been making comments everyday, outside the award shows, so of course they are going to take advantage of the camera to make their points.
I know a lot more about both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson than the average American - I teach American government. I have read and studied the correspondence between Adams Jefferson in their later years, when they looked back at what they had done as young men and as presidents. The series John Adams was spectacular, but do not think you know everything about those men because you watched an HBO series, which was written, produced and directed by people who wanted to make their own points about that time in history.
FYI, this is a pivotal election in this country's history and yes, it is much more important than many other elections, such as 1976 or 1980 or some others I could mention. Most particularly, it is most important because it is NOW. This economy is disintegrating before our eyes, our infrastructure is rotting away, our student loan crisis will make the mortgage crisis look like a cakewalk and our banking system is teetering on the brink of disaster. Who we elect as president and to our congress will determine whether this country remains a leader in the world or becomes an indebted has-been.
....chopin47, among many other unfortunate things, don't forget North Korea and their new nuclear weapons ramp-up, or the Russian ship full of nuclear weapons (for sale?) on its way to Argentina....for starters... put together with all you mentioned, the term "sitting duck" keeps running through my mind.... has anyone heard about the "October surprise" supposedly having been planned by muslim terrorists to shake up the election? i digress, and sense a volley of rotten veggies headed my way..... note to self: STFU
Dry, what does STFU mean? It is dirty?
Red, if I'm right, I'll be the first one surprised, but maybe it means "shut the f*** up"? If that is not what it means, I apologize for offending anyone.
...i'm sorry - i've seen this on here so i figured it was PC... it means "shut the ****up..." heeee
hi zerelda!
I was right? Lucky guess for me. I am not up on the popular computer terms - my daughter had to tell me what "ROFLOL" meant.
Hi, Dry Manhattan - ya know, I've been meaning to tell you how much I like your little profile picture. It just epitomizes sophistication.
......ta....!
i didn't totally know the vernacular either... it's pretty cute, but there is nothing like reading it long-hand. JMHO.
someone used it a few times, someone else clarified, and now, every time i look in the mirror, i just can't help saying it to myself.
go figure.
:P
My little show is all grown up! I am somewhat sad, I must admit, because no longer is Mad Men the secret gem adored by our sophisticated little following. But of course, I am thrilled that it has gotten the critical acclaim it deserves. I do hope its audience will grow and the show continues for a long run.
Rachel, I agree! I feel kinda like I felt when my son started school and than many years later when he left home for college...like you're losing something but gaining something possibly lots better. It's mixed feelings to not have our little "secret gem" (so well put!) all to ourselves anymore, but so proud/happy they are receiving all the well deserved publicity/awards.
I'm also in the "get a life" category but I went back to watch the Emmys again and watched frame by frame when they won their award. Here's what I saw: When Tom Selleck announces that they won, Jon immediately looks back at his castmates, but doesn't look at his girlfriend. She looks at him adoringly the whole time. After several frames, Jon and January make eye contact very briefly, but it looks like she looks at him first. Eventually, after a very long time Jon turns back to his girlfriend and they hug.
When they are up on stage, Jon is next to January, but they are uncomfortably far away from each other. There is almost a two person space in between them. He has Elizabeth Moss on the other side of him. At one point, he gets closer to Elizabeth and they do a side hug and stay like that for a long time, now he is even farther away from January, there is big gap there. Eventually toward the very end of Matt Weiner's speech, Jon inches over to January and stands close to her, almost as if he remembered that she's his leading lady. They never make eye contact.
Also, I just looked in People Magazine and there is a picture of the entire cast. Interestingly enough, Jon is sitting on a stool with the entire cast around him and Elizabeth Moss in on his lap, while January Jones is off the to the side, next to Christina Hendricks.. THAT is very weird to me. Wouldn't it make sense to have January on Jon's lap and Elizabeth off to the side next to Christina? Yes, I know...get a life LOL
Wow, thanks Daisy for that great observation! Something just wasn't right in that whole Jon / January equation on Emmy night. I wonder if Jon and January are getting tired of each other from working so many hours together and having to do take after take to get it perfect. It has got to wear on you eventually. We see the end product of each scene with them together, but we never know how many hours it takes to get that scene. Not to mention who had to do it over and over again to get it right. I wonder if the women were a little peeved about not getting an Emmy nomination? That's gotta hurt as well.
It seems that Jon and Elizabeth are good friends. They were doing that side by side hug for a long time and smiling at each other. And then she ends up on his lap for the group shot. Maybe it was spontaneous, but I just find it strange that January wasn't on his lap and Elizabeth wasn't the one that was part of the background group. Something seems strange there.
I'll drink to that Daisy darling! ;o)
....."Little Peggy" is how Bryan Batt referred to Elisabeth's character....she is the one person who "gets" to Sal....and on set too i guess.
i get the strong impression she is the "llittle darling" of the ensemble....
and why not? she's adorable.
Jon Hamm Helps Girlfriend Dress for Emmy Night
Jennifer Westfeldt says the Mad Man hunk has "got a good eye"

Jennifer Westfeldt is Emmy-ready as far as her Sunday-night outfit is concerned – for which she credits boyfriend Jon Hamm, star of the much-nominated Mad Men.
"He's got a good eye," the actress-screenwriter, 38, told PEOPLE at Friday's Academy of Television & Sciences party for the acting nominees – of which the hunky Hamm is one. "You'd be surprised.
"Plus," she said, "I wanted to wear something he loves, so I feel so happy with it now. There were so many I could have worn and been delighted to wear, but every dress has a different vibe."
Modest about the role he played in helping Westfeldt select her outfit, Hamm, 37, told PEOPLE that he simply "gave my opinion. You know, I’m not qualified to make the decision on those levels."
As for what he might wear Sunday – such as a lucky charm – Hamm said, "I don't have any, but I might wear something that means something to me, or bring something … I'm not sure yet. We'll see."
Westfeldt assumed the same "we'll see" attitude when asked how it feels being attached to one of TV's hottest guys.
"I'll get back to you on that," she promised, "but, you know, he's always been a sex symbol to me, so I don't know [why] everyone is just catching up now."
I didn't watch the emmy's, the main thing I was interested in was seeing john Hamm and January Jones. I read where she commented on how small she is in real life comparerd to the way she looks on the show. I think it's camera angle not just that it puts more weight on you. I saw a picture of her with Ashton Kutcher and she looked like a tiny little waif. Plus the costume make them look older and more serious. But how did John look? I saw him at Golden Globes I think and I as disappointed because he looked like Don Draper, I'd like to see him look like himself, seems odd to show up in costume!!! Hair greased down. I saw an older movie with him in it with longer hair and no grease and he looked foxy! Of course it was an older movie so he was somewhat thinner to, but I'd like to see the real him
