Help!

I am a little confused... how did Betty put 2 and 2 together when she saw the UTZ commercial and called Don to tell him not to come home.

I'm not entirely sure that she made any logical connection between the UTZ commercial and Don's business dealings with Jimmy & Bobbi.

For a moment, she might have thought she could just sweep all that under the rug again and pretend that things were back to normal. But seeing Jimmy's obnoxious face staring at her from the TV, his presence seemed to mock her - to throw all of it back in her face again. He's the reality check she needed to push her over the edge and react to Don's cheating.

It also goes back to the public embarrassment she feels she's suffered at the hands of Don. She realizes it at the dinner party (though I'm sure he's made her feel that way before ..) and then again when she sees the commercial. This famous, jerk comedian knows that she's been made a food of - she probably feels violated on some level.

But that's just my speculation. There's a lot you can read into that moment - especially because there's really no dialogue from Betty.

Not sure what "clicked" for Betty. It seemed to me that she was ready to forgive Don or at least look the other way (the scene where she was checking the roast or whatever it was in the oven suggested a return to domestic "bliss"), but then she saw Jimmy Barrett's rather unpleasant face and it all came back to her. Sort of like when she puked in Don's car -- an involuntary reaction to an unpleasant event. Maybe the line "take it from me" in the commercial brought it back to her. Maybe it dawned on her that Jimmy had no reason to lie to Betty about the affair -- even if Jimmy hates Don (true enough), why would Jimmy volunteer that he had been cheated on too? On some level, Jimmy owes alot to Don -- Don made it possible for Jimmy to do the Utz commercial while at the same time doing "Grin and Barrett". So, why would Jimmy go out of his way to make up a lie about an affair? Maybe it also occurred to her in seeing the commercial that Don is all about making things up -- the scene with Jimmy in the bar in the commercial was fake, maybe Don's explanation that "nothing happened" was fake. Recall Betty's search through his pockets and finding nothing but "stupid advertising." Whatever the case may be, Betty realized she needed to protect herself and could not trust Don.

....great thoughts. maybe it was the "i'm not crazy" line. something about that keeps coming back to me for some reason.

Cup - recall that it was Jimmy who came right to the point and steamrolled the facts about his skank wife and Don at the Monday night celebration for Jimmy's TV show? Prior to this, Betty 'knew' about her Don's multiple indiscretions (She told the shrink she had 'Smelled other women on him') Yes, she 'knew' but until then, Don's skankiness had never been verbalized to her. When something is finally spoken about, it becomes REAL. Betty had an epiphany watching the Utz commercial because it had been Jimmy who'd broken the silence to her. First we see her placidly looking at her Coq au vin in the stove (guessing at the cuisine) and next while Jimmy's Utz spot telling her "you're not crazy" is all it took for the 100 watt light bulb in Bets brain to turn on. Now she realizes that yes indeed, her perfect man is exchanging bodily fluids with the hideous Bobbie. When it was infidelity without form, Betty tolerated her suspicions. But Betty has seen and been repulsed by Bobby and the thought of Don being with such a skank and then coming home to her and the kids is beyond Bets ability to tolerate. She's FINALLY going to 'throw his golf clubs out the window' . With a smiling Nod to Carmela Soprano. Question is: Who will be Betty's 'Furio'? My guess - it will not be just one guy. Her incredible beauty will permit her to pick any number of Studly-do-rights. Can't wait!

Sorry Hyperboliz...

Betty had seen Bobbi but had not been, repulsed by her. When she met Bobbi again at the ABC celebration, they both were congenial. That's why when she was telling Don that she knew about his affair with her, all she could pull out of the air derogatory was, "She's so OLD!

Betty's disdain for Bobbi was rooted in the knowledge of Don's affair with her.

Cupcake1...
I believe Betty's aha moment came during the commercial when Jimmy said, "I'm not crazy!" She then realized that, indeed, Don had again convinced her she had made it all up....he had her doubting herself (again), and she had dismissed his behavior because he had convinced her that Jimmy's insinuations were without merit.

Armed with the knowledge that she was not making it up she was able to step forward and make decisions that benefited only her. The first being she didn't want to see Don (or hear his lies) any more (right now).

I think by Betty telling Don not to come home is her way of giving Don a "time out". Just like Jennifer did to Harry and Racine did to Carl. She will think he is being punished, he will think he is being punished. However, it was the 60's and a baby or excessive spending on his wife brings the husband back into the home. Don will take his punishment, but I think Betty will forgive and forgets. Maybe not forget.. ;o)

I think she looked at the commercial, with this course, creepy little man grimmacing at the camera, stuffing his mouth with peanuts and potatoe chips and thought to herself, "This is the caliber of person Don wallows with. This disgusting little man and his trashy, classless, old wife. This is what he cheated on me for. This is what he brought into our lives."

And enough was enough.

I agree, I do think that Betty will give Don a 'time out' and she will take him back. I can see him buying her some expensive jewlery, Betty accepting anf then sweeping the whole thing under carpet, him being a good boy-- only for a while.....maybe with the new secretary?

First, I don't think of Bobbie as hideous. She a good-looking woman with a great shape. She's ambitious, a sex addict and a boozer - the female Don. She seems pretty "real" to me and I think she adds so much to the story line. As for Betty, she is a stunted personality who can't see her hypocrisy and is essentially sleepwalking through life. She was DEFINATELY flattered by Jimmi's attention. I think her decision to tell Don to stay away sprang from acknowledging that fact when she saw the commercial. She may have been disgusted, also, by the realization that both she and Don might potentially have done some spouse-swapping. Betty is a snob, also. That sort of personality has major problems since life constantly points out to them that they are no better or more secure than anyone else..

Remember when Tony Soprano gave Carmella the expensive watch? Then she threw it at him during a fight. I wonder if Betty will do the same thing to Don?

It would be great (but entirely out of character) for Don, upon hearing of Bets' imagined or real liason with another man, to lunge for her (a'la Tony S.) and put his big HAMM fist through the nicely wallpapered over plaster wall! Alas, my personal fantasy, that's all.

I am seeing The Danny Thomas Show that was on the TV being contrasted with Jimmy coming on in the commercial. The Danny Thomas Show is representative of the life that Betty THINKS she has... Then Jimmy comes on in the UTZ (YUCKS) commercial and brings the painful memory of Jimmy's message back to the front of Betty's thoughts. Then she has no choice. She must make some sort of statement so she tells Don not to come home. But I think it is a temporary thing, very temporary. I am a wife of the 60's. I know how we all thought.
