Fan-Made Soundtracks

Since we're posting topics to pass the time over the next 2 weeks, I thought it would be interesting to see what kind of playlists/soundtracks all you Maddicts would put together for season 2. (These can include songs that have played in the episodes as well). There are so many wonderful songs and phenomenal artists from that period, I find myself listening to more and more music from that era lately. I'd love to see what kind of list this season could inspire.

Here a few off the top of my head just for starters:

1. Nina Simone: No Good Man
2. Bob Dylan: Pretty Peggy-O
3. Vince Guaraldi: Cast Your Fate To The Wind
4. Dion: The Wanderer
5. Roy Orbison: Blue Bayou
6. Bo Diddley: You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover
7. ANY Dick Dale tune from '62 or '63

Frank Sinatra, "Strangers in the Night," comes to mind immediately. Dedicated to Don and Betty!

1910 Fruitgum Co., "Indian Giver." Dedicated to Don by Betty through clenched teeth!

Girl - is the rule that it must be circa 1962 music? If so, then what about these:

1) If You Wanna Be Happy for the Rest of Your Life: Jimmy Soul (Betty's Theme :-))
2) Go Away Little Girl - Steve Lawrence (Sally's Theme)
3) Tears on My Pillow - Little Anthony and the Imperials - Kitty's Theme
4) Who's Sorry Now? - Connie Francis (Peggy's Theme)
5) What Kind of Fool Am I - Sammy Davis Jr. (Worm-Boy Pete's Theme)
6) Innamorata - Jerry Vale (SAL's Theme)

I need to go look at my old 45 collection. How vividly I recall sitting on my front porch with my transistor radio and it's glass ear bud jammed in my ear just WAITING for WMCA and the "good guys" to play these songs back in the day. Impanema Girl - what a wonderful idea?? Thanks

No problem Hyperboliz -

I figured there had to at least a couple music fans on this site.

Meh, no real rules on this one. I tried to stick to songs from '62 & '63 - though lots of songs from '60 - '67 really could apply. If it suits the show, go for it!

Girl_From_Ipanema! I looooved "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" !
One I think would be good for the soundtrack would be: "Stranger on the Shore" by Acker Bilk...what a mood song that was. I'll leave it to some of you to match it to--- whoever? Maybe Joan after her broken engagement?? (I hope)

Oh, someone posted on these forums not long ago a link on YouTube to Gene Pitney's "Town Without Pity" relating it to Don.
I think ANY of Gene Pitney's songs would fit MM perfectly esp. "Only Love Can Break a Heart" IMHO
I thought for a while they might use " The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" to close the epi with Pete telling Peggy he'd been to see it. Loooove, Gene Pitney's voice!

Awesome songs scfan! Vince Guaraldi is jazz great. Another song I think is great for the show (even tho it came out in '67) is "Baby" by Caetano Veloso. Something about that bossanova sound is so alluring. "Baby" could be applied to any number of characters tho - in Peggy's case it would be cold and ironic.

How about "Cry Me a River" by Julie London? That would fit Betty, Peggy or Joan.

Also Ella Fitzgerald's "Black Coffee" would be appropriate for the ladies.

Wow, love everyone's song ideas!

If I can sort-of break from the talk of period songs…

Actually, I’ve been listening to a modern album lately that has lyrics which remind me of the ladies on MM and their relationships with the men. Duffy is a female singer from Wales and her album “Rockferry” is a wonderful mix of blues, ‘60s-girl-group-style pop, and soul, perhaps a little reminiscent of Dusty Springfield. You may have heard her big hit “Mercy”, ….oh, just about everywhere on the radio and commercials, but some of her other songs definitely echo the plight of the women on MM.

I think of this song (“Serious”) as Betty’s theme:

I’m a trophy on your arm/You wear me like a charm (Yes you do)
An accessory that suits/Your new suede boots (ohhh)

I get a feeling deep down inside/Something just ain’t right.
I get a feeling that tells me I know/Baby you never show…
How you really feel for me/Tell me, can we ever be/Serious …serious in love?

A joke on my expense/In front of all your friends (All the time)
A game you like to play/Leaves me solo …every day.

I get a feeling deep down inside/Something just ain’t right.
I get a feeling that tells me I know/Baby you never show…
How you really feel for me/Tell me can we ever be/Serious …serious in love?

Another song, “Stepping Stone “ (I’ll never be your stepping stone/ Take it all you leave me alone/ I will never be your stepping stone/I’m standing up right on my own) also speaks to what I want Betty and some of the other ladies to be thinking about themselves - self-empowerment.

Sorry for the long post . Just wanted to voice my musings. :-)

It's been posted on several of these forums already that it was Peter, Paul & Mary singing "Early In the Morning"
One poster even put a link to a clip of them singing it (from YouTube) on one of the forums a few days ago, if you want to check back a few days you'll find it.

Don't know how my answer to DapperDraper got posted BEFORE his question but...what the....???

Oooh, scfan, you scare me.

user-pic

Ooooooooh, now I am scaring myself!?!?!?

Anyone know the name/artist of the song at the end of Sunday's episode? Father Gill began the song on the guitar - it then picked up to an original studio recording. Totally unexpected, but perfectly placed in that episode!

This here forum has the posts mixed up! oh well

"Do You See My Love (For You Growing)" (The Dirtbombs version, not Jr. Walker) it's a cover by a song from late 60's, early 70's but I think it fits the show perfectly.

The Soundtrack from "The Pawnbroker" by the fabulously talented and then very young Quincy Jones is one of the most haunting and evocative of that era. Although the notes do conjure up the image of Rod Steiger and the meanest streets of Manhattan back in the day - it's still a fantastic piece of music and certainly makes one think of the City in a darker, grittier iteration. Also:
He's a Rebel - the Crystals (Don's Theme)
Dream - Everly Brothers
Judy's Turn to Cry - Leslie Gore
I Only Have Eyes for You - Flamingos

"The Shadow of Your Smile", also known as "Love Theme from The Sandpiper", is a popular song. The music was written by Johnny Mandel, the lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. The song was introduced in the 1965 movie The Sandpiper and became a minor hit for Tony Bennett. It won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Now matter who sings it or where this song always gets to me....it would be a great break up or get together sone for the shows characters.

Astrud Gilberto and Matt Munro also covered 'The Shadow of Your Smile'. It's a beautiful song indeed and as Ipanema Girl mentioned, Bossa Nova was just reaching our shores so the sultry almost quiet tones of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto and all Tropicalia were taking the USA by Storm. My parents were musicians and fell in love with Bossa Nova as did I. LOVED the sound of the beautiful Portuguese language and music also helped along by Sergio Mendes, Brasil 66 and the talented Lani Hall. I didn't hear of Caetano Veloso, Dori Caymmi, or Vinicius de Moraes, or Gal Costa until years later. For my money - there is no more evocative music than Samba.

@Hyperboliz. Nice to find another fan of Samba and Portuguese music. I remember my mother playing Brazil 66 on the hi-fi back in the 60's.I am a total fan of Bebel Gilberto and listen to her music frequently. My ex has possession of all the old albums,Getz and Gilberto. He actually got to see Joao perform at the Hollywood Bowl a few years back but said he was in a rotten mood and the set was short and it wasn't a good show. That music to me is evocative of the 60's when it was just making its debut in the USA.I think old Johnny Mathis would be good background music for some of the MM episodes.
