EMMY'S

I read an online article @ nationalpost.com that said mad man had already won 4 "lesser category" emmys last saturday. the show took place at the shrine auditorium (the same place where this sunday's awards take place), it is called the creative arts awards. does anyone know what categories they won in? also the article stated the MM is the odds on favorite to win best drama, thats the good news. the bad news is the article also stated that boston legal's james spader is the odds on favorite to win best actor in a drama. i know i am a little bias & james spader does a fine job, but jon hamm should absolutely win for best actor hands down.

....my thing about acting is how far a departure is the character from the actor.

i love james spader, but (kind of like shatner) being "out there" really comes naturally to him.

you can't really tell from interviews, but pretty sure john hamm isn't that similar to the donald draper character.

it would be interesting to find out, though.

As much as I love John Slattery ("Duck, Crab...Crab, Duck" HA!) I have to say I'm kind of bummed that he got a nomination over any of the ladies in the show, particularly January Jones. While brilliant, he kinds of gets to breeze in, say funny things, be generally sexist and exit. I think JJ does some seriously heavy lifting in the show with subtle perfection and it's a shame that she isn't being recognized for that.

I kinda agree, HomeRunBallerina, about John Slattery & January Jones...she's got a lot more acting to do than he does...although I LOVE Roger and am happy he's nominated and hope he wins-- I do agree that JJ should have been nominated in the "Best Acting" category for women.
Dry Manhattan, I read a while back in "Parade" (Sun. newspaper mag) in an article on William Shatner that James Spader is not friendly at all...he said he put his hand out to shake hands with him when they first met and JS was very rude and stuck up (can't remember the exact way WS described it but that was the gist) and since then he just does his scenes with him and leaves him alone. He said he thought at first it might have been him just "staying in character" like many actors like to do, but over time, he has realized it's just "him" so.....boo to him--although I love his work on "Boston Legal" I have to say...
I have heard nothing but good things about John Hamm "in real life"-- not stuck up or conceited at all (yet!)-- so I hope he wins on that but mainly because he is the better actor of the two and the BEST actor of the entire nominated group! GO JON AND JOHN S. TOO!!

Mispelled Jon Hamm's name up there...you all know it's "Jon" though... LOL

user-pic

I also think I misspelled "mispell...????!!!! but now that's getting nit-picky, huh?"

HomeRunBallerina:
Don't forget, this is for Season One, not Season Two. Last year a lot of posters were complaining about how J. Jones' character never did anything. Until the "Shoot" episode and her... enjoyment of her Mayag washer's charms.

user-pic

Ritt: I did consider that. I still think it stands. JJ had a lot bubbling under the surface for an entire season and I thought it was riveting.

Granted, Slattery got to do the heart attack/cry to the wife thing. But I still think, even in Season 1 that Betty was more interesting to watch, IMHO. The thing with Glen, her reactions to Don, therapy sessions - so good.

user-pic

Oh, I forgot about JS' big crying-to-the-wife scene...no wonder he was nominated!!!!! It's just that JJ deserved a nom, too...maybe next year! Let's hope!

Last season, hardly anyone outside the industry had even heard about Mad Men. I feel so lucky to have been a fan from the first episode.

The rest of America is just now catching up, and with them, I believe Emmy will, too.

.....HomeRunBallerina - JJ "heavy lifting" is right.

I even thought so in Season One and said so. I think it is much bigger challenge than people understand to play a very repressed woman learning to identify and manage her feelings and figure out her world. Especially with the men in her life constantly convincing her she is crazy.

Not contradicting that, I think the look on Roger's face in the lobby at the end of the long, hot climb was brilliant. and Draper's look right back was the punch line.

to be fair, John Slattery's story lines were a lot more prominent last season.

To me, someone who is overlooked is christina hendricks. what do you think Joan looked or sounded or acted like before Christina brought her to life. I wouldn't mind seeing those early scripts or screen tests to know what she had to work with.

Joan is a work of art.

Check out the blogs:
"Jon and Slattery freaking out" man Jon Hamm is GOOD looKING!!!!
I'm so over Spader! I've seen him and worked with him. He's so stuck up and his early work was weak, weak. So he has nothing on our HAM! (misspelled purposely, of course) Jon Hamm must win or it's not right!!

Thanks for posting this black_joan.
I just saw them picking up the emmy for cinematography. I went looking for the list of wins, but couldn't find them. You helped me out.
I am so glad the arts are being acknowledged. This is what gives the characters that "world to behave in".

Re Spader: He always seems to play the same character. I don't watch Boston Legal, but......
Also for Shatner to be telling tales out of school, he was the Prima Dona on Star Trek. He has no room to talk.
