Don's Assumed Identity
On another thread a blogger said that Don D. had told Rachel of his assumed identity. I am assuming this would have happened in Season 1, if true. Did he tell Rachel this? If so, I am surprised he would take the chance. They did not part on the best of terms and I would think he would not like knowing there was someone out there besides Pete and Cooper who knew his secret. Also, do we know if Cooper mentioned Don's identity theft to Roger?

As far as we know he did NOT tell Rachel about his identity switcheroo. He told her about his parents and childhood, but as far as Rachel knows all that crap happened to Don Draper - she doesn't know a lick about Dick Whitman.
We also don't know if Cooper told Sterling, but I suspect he kept it to himself. He told Don regarding Pete, "You never know how loyalty is born," and he probably meant that about Don too. Unless Cooper finds the information to be useful, he'll keep quiet about it. Another clue was in "Gold Violin" when Cooper had Rodger leave the room after they told Don about Don's new opportunities on the art board. Cooper said something to Don about how he knows "a little bit" about his past and how there are few people who get opportunities like the one he's getting (insinuating how lucky Don is to get the opportunity given his past).
Right, hanna. And what Pete and Cooper know is different from what Rachel knows. Pete and Cooper know that Dick Whitman became Don Draper, although they're not necessarily aware of the particulars. Rachel knows that the man she believes to be Don Draper had a miserable childhood -- that his mother was a whore who died in childbirth, his father was a drunk who died when he was 10, and his stepmother rapidly took up with another man after his father died.
thank you, that clears that up for me. I was sure Don would not have told all his secrets to Rachel. I remember that he told her of his miserable childhood, but that was all.
I don't know if they mention it above but Don was in an awful state when he told Rachel that much because he knew that Peter was going to tell his secret and I think all his lying caught up with him. They make love and he asks her to run away with him which was totally unappropriate and Rachel disapeerc and they lost the account
....Rachel considered the offer to run away, but upon learning a little more about Draper's state of mind, she realizes he is asking her for all the wrong reasons, and says no.
Smart girl.
Don didn't tell Rachel about his past when Pete tried to blackmail him. He just came to her in a panicked state and said he wanted to run off with her but never said why. That was one of her key reasons for saying no. She kept asking if he was upset because of Roger's heart attack.
He had told her about his childhood quietly, one night in bed.
I believe Cooper's quote was "You never know how loyalty is borne" -- as in "carried," not "born" as in "created."
I also would like to know why Pete hasn't blabbed the Dick Whitman debacle around the whole office.
Coop may not give a hang, but you can't tell me Pete wouldn't score points with Harry, Paul, Ken, and Freddie.
Very good point, boop. As Pete's been pushed down more this season, I've been waiting for him to blow up and let loose with all the secrets. What's holding him back is probably either or both of the following: 1) Cooper told him to let it go and he wouldn't want to cross Cooper, 2) Pete doesn't really like to do unsavory things (he was pretty reluctant to use his secrets card to get the job) and he wouldn't do it unless he saw no choice.
I think Pete is still running scared. He used his ace in the hole with Bert Cooper and it blew up in his face. I think Pete is too scared to have the same thing happen withThree Stooges (Ken, Paul and Harry). He brags to his family about being indispensable, yet tells the doctor that he is dispensable. The hiring of the Smith's instead of promoting Pete was another slap in the face to him as well. Pete drinks but doesn't smoke and Duck smokes but doesn't drink...possible connection in the future?
Drink & Smoke: I think Duck does smoke.
But, yes, Pete is still scared of Don. Remember, Don fired Pete in Season One, and Cooper made Roger and Don "unfire" him. Roger told Pete that it was Don's idea to reinstate him (which was total bullshit). But Cooper was right: Pete is now showing some loyalty to Don by keeping his mouth shut.
SoFlaKate: That is a very interesting intepretation of Cooper's quote. I hadn't thought of it that way.
Drink & Smoke: Sorry -- I misread your comment about Duck's smoking. It was late last night and I was tired! Reading these posts all day and all night causes eyestrain!
Pete hasn't blabbed because Roger told him that Don saved his job. He now feels some allegiance to Don, and will hold the information (I don't believe he has given up on his idea of its true value) until it can be of some use to him again.
I mentioned before that Pete seems to now be scurrying behind Duck. Duck's compliments while they were pursuing American Airlines have made him feel his opportunities for advancement are closer with Duck. Don and Roger still keep him at arms length, and he knows it.
Pete's role is so good. I can't help enjoying loathing his character and thanking Victor K. for bringing him to life.
