Does anyone else think Pete's going to find out about his kid?

I just get that feeling because of the recent events. Anyone else agree?

Right after Don learns about it. You can take that to the bank.

user-pic

Nope, not anytime soon. And JimK's right about Don.

user-pic

Ooh I totaly forgot about that angle. Good point. I see that she confronts him about in the next episode though =P

user-pic

You think Don already knows because of his hospital visit to Peggy? He sure gives Pete short shrift these days.

I don't think Pete will ever know. It's not a certainty that Peggy is yelling at Pete. Hey, it could be her sister, mother, Don, even the holy Father Gill. Have to know by now that Matt Weiner et al play with us constantly between the next episode previews/pictures. They're just devils about it!

user-pic

Hi all! There was no baby!

user-pic

It never happened

heh

user-pic

....well, remember they CUT to pete after peggy's rant, probably because they want us to think she's confronting him about the baby or something.

i am going out on a limb here and say that she is confronting her sister. i would have done it a lot sooner than this, let me tell you. what she did was totally unforgivable.

like many others, peggy probably wanted to bitch-slap father gill for pushing and prying, so the logical thing would be to go home and scream at her sister.

btw, as a disclaimer, i also said in another post that he was just doing his job according to the church, in that era.

i do think father gill has a crush on peggy, but i don't know about the "tension" part mentioned in other posts. oh well. we all know stranger things have, and will happen!

colin hanks plays the inscrutable element VERY well. i loved his face when he was peeling off all the stiff accoutrements of a priest. i almost thought the next layer would be a hair shirt!

if you don't know that term, here's a quick def:

A hair shirt is a coarse garment worn next to the skin, thus keeping the wearer in a state of discomfort and constant awareness of the shirt's presence. Such garments were traditionally worn by some Christian religious orders, along with individuals who felt penitent about certain actions or their lifestyles. The use of hair shirts is fairly limited in the modern era, but the term is often used metaphorically, which is why someone might refer to wearing a hair shirt when they perform some other act of self-imposed penitence.

...or otherwise known as "my bad!"

user-pic

...no baby - ha. she dreamed it.

user-pic

Okay no seriously - one of you explain to me the "Peggy's Pregnancy Never Happened" theory. I can't wrap my brain around that. Her situation drove me to fits of mania about her character. First I liked her, then I despised her, then i felt kind of sorry for her, now I don't know what to feel. Help.

user-pic

I agree. Peggy's about as interesting as paper toweling. Matt Weiner & Co. had better get this girl a personality and quick, or as for her story line, in the words of Bert Coooper "Who cares?"

user-pic

Peggy knows intellectually she had a baby. But she's not willing to admit it or (presumably) that she gave it up for adoption emotionally.

Don knows she had a kid. He would have talked to her doctors and shown concern about why she was drugged up and in the funny farm wing. They'd probably have told him - her boss, she was missing work, etc. They'd probably think he was the daddy as well but that's a different issue.

So he told her, "it didn't happen" and "tell them what they want to hear." She obviously did but the emotional import of having a baby didn't sink in, she wasn't mentally ready for it. She said what they wanted to hear so she could get out and on with her life.

She probably knows who's the daddy but because she has blocked out that aspect of her life, it's immaterial. She knows she had sex with Pete twice and dismisses any physical consequences. And if the baby at Anita's is hers, with that blond hair, it could have been truck driver man's kid.

user-pic

We don't know that she ever named Pete as the father. If he ever does find out it will most likely be the cliffhanger in the final episode that will make the wait for next season totally unbearable.

default userpic

I may be proven wrong, but I do not believe Pete is the father. I also think Trudy lied to him about his sperm test results. Trudy wants to get pregnant and she wants her "own" baby. If Pete knows he's shooting blanks, she'll never get away with it.

user-pic

....so sorry, i looked again at the preview, and it IS pete campbell's door peggy is busting through. now i am really curious.

someone said something about peggy yelling at pete for disclosing her use of the copier....but i noticed that in peggy's conversation with father gill, she mentioned she "cleared it," meaning at work.

what else would it be?

user-pic

Cheers to you MicheleKay. I wonder if we are the only two people on this blog that thinks the baby is not Pete's? I got a weird feeling when Trudy told Pete about the sperm count that she was lying. It was as if she was feeling sorry for HIM and not HER. Trudy is so protective of her husband and the dream world she has created. Then again, maybe the obvious is the obvious....hmmmm

user-pic

MicheleKay & Drink&Smoke:
Naahh... She was so broken up to find out the problem was on her side of the account ledger.

Unless... what was her old flame's name who wouldn't mind getting together with her again on the side? Maybe he has frisky swimmers and this was the way she's going to justify an affair to herself. After all, if Petey wouldn't mind her doing "whatever's necessary" to get published, what would he let her do to have a baby?

Laurie B:
Weren't they saying the same thing about Betty's character not so long ago?

user-pic

If Peggy is busting in Pete's door, could she be addressing the fact that she did not like the slogan they went forward with on Clearasil?..."Thanks Clearasil!" (a real slogan)
Pete could have undermined her by telling his father-in-law she didn't like it.

I don't think it's the baby. First of all, he doesn't know about any baby he fathered.

The only other drama I could forsee would involve Pete telling the good ol' boys he slept with her. That would certainly cause that kind of explosion.

default userpic

You know, those "teasers" often are not what they lead you to believe. We'll have to wait and see who Peggy is yelling at. How many times have we been tricked by teasers which are edited to look like something else entirely?

And don't we love it!

user-pic

I know, MicheleKay...
on both things....

default userpic

I thought i saw in a preview where Pete talks to her about it. Maybe not. But I think he'll find out

user-pic

Peggy dreamed her baby? Well, we know she actually had a baby, don't we? Didn't her sister spill the beans to Father PushyPants? Also, didn't the nurse at the hospital stand over her with a new baby and ask her if she didn't want to hold him? The only mystery seems to be whether her sister is raising the baby or if she gave him up for adoption. I am thinking the sister has the child - why else would the sister remind Peggy that the State of New York did not think Peggy really knew what she wanted. I took that to mean they would not allow her to put the child up for adoption due to her mental instability, so the family took the baby and the sister is raising it.

I do not recall any other man at the office giving her any particular attention, other than Pete, who is a worm of the first order, and boy, she ought to be glad he's somebody else's problem.

user-pic

It's just a matter of time. Of course he will find out. We'll see what happens when we find out his wife cannot conceive.

user-pic

zerelda: The definitely was a baby (unless MM is the new Dallas and the entire season is just part of somebody's dream). People are just being silly and messing around.

user-pic

Let's not forget the 'Newhart Show' where Bob woke up from a dream and found himself next to Suzanne Pleshette. To quote our boy Roger (sort of), "God, I miss the 80's"

user-pic

The only time I questioned whether Peggy's "baby" was still alive (it certainly was when the nurse tried to get her to hold him after she had just given birth) is when Peggy had Bobbie Barrett staying at her apartment.

When Peggy went into that long explanation about the kid who died from a swingset head injury, and she kept asking Bobbie about her head, all I thought was "huh?". Alot of explanatory dialogue and relating it to young children, just to ask Bobbie if she has a headache/head injury. Made me think something had happened to Peggy's baby son.

user-pic

Probably a better explanation: Peggy was in the same state of mind when the nurse brought in the baby as when Don visited her in the hospital bed. Catatonic. She had some sort of breakdown and the way out was what Don told her "do what they tell you to do" i.e. give up the child for adoption.

I don't think she wants Campbell to know about the birth nor anyone else in the office to know.

user-pic

I agree Hapynzap, Peggy doesn't ever want anyone to know. She may have to come to grips with it on her own in private about what happened to her, and how she handled it. Doesn't mean she'd still want to tell Pete or anyone else. There may be hell to pay when the adult son confronts Peggy about her "abandonment", but that's so far off in the future, that it doesn't register.

user-pic

Did anyone else notice how close Peggy came to actually responding to Fr. Gill's prodding? A few more seconds and we would have found out something! I think she was saved only by the sound of the copier completing the printing job he had been waiting for.

user-pic

There is just something sooooo wrong with the Father Gill! Getting her to confess at work! While you are at it Father Gill, take her to Grand Central Station for another confessional opportunity. Make sure EVERYONE in NYC knows as well. What is wrong with this man?

user-pic

Agree. Fr. Grill is starting to bug me.

user-pic

I don't know, perhaps Father Gill was attempting to his job where Peggy is more comfortable...at her job.

user-pic

But I think we all know that Peggy would most definitely not be comfortable confessing all to him at work - who knows who might overhear them - even with the copier going. She has already seen how they operate in that office - Joan's driver's license is just one example. If anyone heard one whisper about an illegitimate baby, there would be whispers behind Peggy's back for sure. The Pete would hear something and then the Pete would hit the fan.

user-pic

The Pete would hit the fan...hilarious zerelda! Not to mention Peggy would probably get a visit from the Welcome Wagon (Ken, Harry and Paul). They would show up at her desk to find out more on the baby. Or worse, post a copy of the baby's birth certificate on the employee bulletin board.

user-pic

I thought when people confessed, 1) it should be in church, but 2) they should be willing to confess of their own accord. Isn't Father Gill risking pushing Peggy's fragile mental state over the edge? Is he supposed to do that or doesn't he realize that Peggy really does have some emotional/mental problems that are beyond the realm of a priest's help (and most likely requires the services of a psychiatrist)?

user-pic

I truelly believe that Peggy's baby is alive. Yes, her sister was pregnant in that scene at the hospital.
I was flying back to New York City in 1966 and sat next to a young woman who worked at the New York Foundling Hospital. It still existed back then. I believe there is a baby. It could be placed somewhere besides her sister's house. And I think it might not be Pete's. And I think Peggy is starting to accept that she had a baby but she has a PLAN for her life much like Don does and she will only "go forward". So even if that is Pete's baby he will never, never know.
The three females, Joan, Betty and Peggy are all very talented. I can relate to a part of each character.

user-pic

I think that's Pete's baby. I think Peggy will never tell him though. Umm where IS the baby by the way? Did Peggy's sister's baby die and she's raising peggy's baby as her own? Why would she encourage Peggy to say good night to the baby in that episode? Gosh I love this show!

user-pic

Oh, TheBlackJoan, that's an interesting premise about Anita's baby's fate (Peggy's sister). No one has brought up that idea (that the sister's baby died and she took over raising Peggy's as her own). Alot of posters have theorized that Anita is raising Peggy's baby, yes, but not that Anita's baby died and now she's raising Peggy's. Hmm......very interesting!

user-pic

yes jamm I only think of that because.. when Peggy looked in on the baby that day she was at her mom's house, there was only one toddler.. and Anita was still preggers.. and there were two other bigger kids sleeping in the room.. so.. what happened to Anita's baby (if that was indeed Peggy's child in the crib)?

user-pic

let me clarify.. when Peggy delivered.. Anita was still preggers not when Peggy looked in the room..

user-pic

Oh, okay. Sharp eyes TheBlackJoan! I think you have something there - where is Anita's baby? If it had been Peggy's baby who died for some reason, why would Anita have told Peggy to say goodbye to Anita's baby? Hmm....I really think you're on to something there.

default userpic

oooh, I love this topic. I'm a new poster to these boards, and I love reading all of this -
I'm really liking the theory that Pete is actually not the father because of being sterile, only because of where it will go with Trudy [she might go elsewhere to conceive, etc. lots of dramarama there...]. however, I still think that if we assume that he's the father of Peggy's baby, there is going to be a confrontation, rumors, scandal, et al in the office. can't not happen, it's just too juicy.

Peggy is sort of fascinating to me because of what's emerging with her, I know she appears to be personality-free in some way, but she's actually sort of textured and complicated. the absolute way that she's disassociated herself from having had the baby is bone-chilling, and it makes for a really interesting dynamic with Don. for better or worse, they're now somehow tied as co-conspirators. for her part, because of him knowing about the baby, for his part, she knows about his crash with Bobby. they both rescued each other and I think there's some kind of tacit understanding between them that they are made of the same stuff. Peggy, in sort of a stealth way, is becoming one to be reckoned with, and I'm looking forward to seeing how she climbs the ladder, and at what cost. did you see how she played with that guy she made out with at the party? she said something to the effect that his pitch wasn't good enough. [paraphrasing]. ouch. she's not the nice little girl now.

as for Father Gil, I don't know anything about how the church conducted confessions in that period, but...at work? huh? I can't decide if his investment in Peggy is to save her, or if it's something more personal beyond that. maybe he's got some skeletons of his own? and he identifies with her? thoughts?

lastly, I think the baby is alive and being raised by the sister. [loved her on Big Love].
