Break It To Me Gently
Don didn't deny his relationship with Bobbie to either Jimmy or Betty. While Jimmy's attack was spontaneous, we know that Don is very good 'on his feet'. It's one of things that make him successful - he always has an answer. . He appeared speechless. I think it is somewhat out of character that he didn't defend himself to some degree.
Betty and Don will discuss the events, but I expect him to deny everything Jimmy said. Don Draper seems to be a 'that's my story and I'm sticking to it' kind of guy.
The selection to close the show with Brenda Lee's song was brilliant.

Hi Mary Jane, I agree, the choice of song was great...especially, because the news wasn't broken to her gently!
I disagree - Don never defends himself or outright denies anything. He usually says something like, "What do you want to hear?" or "I'm not going to fight with you." He is typically a man of very few words and doesn't waste them.
Loved the choice of song, but I do have to agree with NancyStowOH on this one. Don and Betty never discuss anything. Remember the night he didn't return with the birthday cake? They never discussed that. They have a tacit agreement to say nothing, ever. I doubt they'll discuss this, either. If they do, he's going to say: "what do you want to hear?"
I haven't read everything, but can anybody tell me how in the world Jimmy found out? It was only last week that he was praising Don and shaking his hand. What happened? Who leaked?
>>> It was only last week that he was praising Don and shaking his hand. What happened? Who leaked?
I said last week that Jimmy knew about the affair. You could tell by his eyes, expression and demeanor that he knew. He didn't go into Don's office just to thank him. Jimmy was taking him in. He waited until he had what he wanted, bided his time and then let Don know that he wasn't anyone's fool. How did he know? Maybe he had Bobbie followed. Maybe Bobbie has done this before. It doesnt' matter how he knew ... he knew.
Yeah, Jimmy knew, and I knew he knew as soon as he called Betty at home to invite her to the party. I did think, however, that he was just going for a little tit for tat, if you will excuse the expression, and trying to do unto Don as Don did unto him. I do wonder, if Betty had indicated she was willing, would he have slept with her, even though she was "another man's wife?"
Don had expected Jimmy to know, and that was why he dodged him in the office...and I think if Jimmy had said the usual things a wronged husband might say, Don would have handled it...or side stepped it..., but Jimmy hit him with the one claim that Don himself was thinking. How do you live with yourself?
No, you see, Bobbie and Betty are manipulators and Jimmy was waiting until the whole deal with his tv show was in order to bring it up. I am sure he knows his wife, well. He said he did to Betty. And, it was not hard to not notice the two were together. Remember, even Rachel noticed in a second. Joan knew. Bobbie knew from day one, but he waited until he got what he wanted and I'm sure he's gotten a lot of things that way. I didn't believe him when he said such a moral thing as being surprised he slept with "another man's wife". He is up to something and it's financial and his big ego.
As for Don, there could be legal ramifications. Don can't say anything nor admit to anything. Even though, he is a man of limited words anyway. As far as the slur of "you people" from Betty, I took it as people in the entertainment business. And, we know people in the business can be referred to as "you people" many times over for what they do, we do, he, she it does...This is how I saw it. I do tend to take things literally and may be wrong at times. But, there you have it, 60'schild, Nancy StowOh,zebra, Stephanie Jo,Michelle Kay,zerelda,Sizzie. Geez, this show gets you going "don't it?
Betty has not accused Don of anything yet. Remember, they don't talk about anything.
When Don came to the coat check to retrieve her wrap she had told him she "didn't feel well." When he approached Jimmy, he didn't have a clue to what was about to happen.
Right at the end of the dress-down, Betty walks up but doesn't say a word. She is still angry at Jimmy and doesn't know what to say to Don about it. So, they drive home in the caddy until she couldn't hold it any more...
Lastly, Jimmy 'knows his wife' who has had the fleet through their bedroom....(he said as much.) I think he just watched the two of them together and put two and two together. Truthfully though, he probably found the tshirt Don left at their beach house.
Jimmy's probably known for a while (maybe since Bobbie's stint at the "fat farm"). She's obviously pulled this scam many times, and he's humiliated and resentful. However, he waited until Don got him his TV show before he said anything - now Don's of no use to him. He's kind of a victim, but he still reaps the benefits of Bobbie's extramarital business meetings.
From the tone of Betty's voice in the teaser, it sounds like Don might be pulling his old "why are you acting like a child" game again, and she confronts him with what she learned. They may not get into the nitty-gritty details, and Don will probably deny it or refuse to explain himself, but the powers will definitely shift in their relationship. He can't act like the intellectual and emotional superior anymore when he knows she has him by the short hairs!
Just before Betty let loose in Don's new car, they both had that kicked in the stomach look on their faces. Two very seperate people, sitting on bench seats (were they bench? I'll have to check ) staring straight ahead. Both with their own thoughts swirling around within them. Don, as far as we heard, doesn't know that Betty knows, he just knows what he knows...ya know? So both are concerned about what Jimmy said. The atitude at the time with some wives was no 'not know', no matter what they actually knew. If they knew their husband had affairs, then they had to leave their passive world and make something happen. What would Betty the wife gain by confronting Don? What would Don gain by acknowledging an affair...let alone multiple affairs? I think they will handle this just like they do everything else in their marriage, by ignoring it. Betty will have to call a professional to clean the car, though.
It looked to me that almost all the spew went into the lap of her dress so I doubt a professional would be needed for that reason. But... it's a brand-new car so... did they have detailing shops back then?
On another line, I think Jimmy knew from Day One. He definitely knew after Bobbi gave him the code words for him to apologize at the dinner. After that, it was just a matter of timing. He knows how she works and is willing to let it happen until he gets all he wants. Which he did after being signed for 39 episodes of "Grin and Barrett."
Only two people really ‘know’ what happened: Don and Bobbie. But I think you’re correct Ritt: Jimmy knows his wife – and what she will do to get what she wants.
I expect Betty to confront Don about Jimmy’s accusations. Perhaps not in an open conversation to resolve the conflict (as if there were an acceptable rationale for his behavior) but she will communicate her displeasure and since this is TV - I doubt it will be silent.
I’m wondering if Don is going to let Jimmy slide. We know that Don likes revenge.
Great show!
Hi all,
What about this?:
Betty keeps quiet about it all and takes revenge with Arthur (or Jimmie???). Just throwing that in.
I completely agree that Betty will not forget or forgive, but will find a way to make her point. She already marked her territory in the passenger seat of his new car.
I thought, paticularly with what was said about Jimmy coming to an apology dinner with the Utz couple, that Jimmy expected to swing with Betty. Don and Bobbi got together, so whats the big deal, right? He tried again and was turned down, so he told the Drapers what he thought.
It isn't the first time for Bobbi, nor for Jimmy. He is a hypocrite, he would have jumped Betty in a heartbeat. Typical Jimmy behavior though. I suspect that this may be the last we see of the Barretts.
I was wrong, earlier, when I said that Betty and Don didn't know the same things. I just rewatched and Betty walks up just before Jimmy unloads on Don. I had forgotten she was there to hear it.
Upon seeing such an annoying character like SAB suffer, I caught a case of schadenfraude! :-P
Thing is...I hate seeing Dapper Don suffer! He's too handsome to hurt!
"Thing is...I hate seeing Dapper Don suffer! He's too handsome to hurt! "
I don't know, Visan, I kinda think the dark, brooding, mysterious, broken part of Don is part of his appeal. You might want to "fix" him a little or just jump his bones and make him forget about his problems. In which case ... bring on the suffering!
In 1963, even the First Lady was putting up with a straying husband. And I think Jackie did love JFK.
Visan and hanna we'll have to take Bobbie's word for it - that 'the full Don Draper treatment... it's better than they said'.
Jon Hamm deserves an Emmy for this role.
Mary Jane: Indeed!
But I want visuals of this Full Don Draper Treatment! Nympho Don and some brown-haired stunner! Whew!
Betty walked up just BEFORE Jimmy "went off on Don? OMG, are we sure about that? She heard it all? I have to watch again now for the 5th time?? Uh-oh, I'm feeling a little sorry for our Betty.
I thought SAB walked up just AFTER Unfunny handed Don his ass and gave that repugnant smile to them? Besides, Don never confirmed he boinked Bobbie. He just had a pained look on his face, which kinda is confirmation. I'm not sure someone as vacuous as SAB would understand such subteties, however.
Of course Jimmy knew about Bobbie and Don. After all, Don left her tied up in her own bedroom for her husband to find when he got home. (Remember, they weren't in a hotel. Why do you think the writers went into such detail about Don saying he'd never want to leave anyone alone in his house when Bobbie offered to let him stay there for the whole afternoon while she left?) I think she was probably so upset and angry that she told Jimmy about it. But that's just my take on it.
Jimmy might be an unpleasant insult comic, but he was right on the money about Don...you don't screw your colleague's wife. This show is just so dern good---I love it when Don is confronted with the truth: Rachel's reaction when she found out he was married last season, and JImmy, a Jew comic (what would be Betty's characterization) calling Don on his lack of morality. And Don not being able to face himself in the mirror the next morning.
Jimmy knows and probably planned the whole thing. He definitely knew back when he went into Don's office and showered him with phony insincere compliments. Jimmy Barrett wouldn't give his mother a real compliment. Jimmy and Bobbi are in cahoots from the beginning tag-teaming Don to get what they want.
How much do you want to bet Jimmy doesn't get re-signed as the spokesman for Utz potato chips?
Given his personality, I doubt "Grin and Barrett" will last more than one season. Groucho was the master of innuendo, sliding his comments in sideways or using double entendres, never anything harsh. Jimmy uses a sledgehammer. A few "complimentary" comments to the show's sponsor by Don (back then they had a primary sponsor)...
Maybe she'll try to take Bobbie out with that BB gun!
I think she's trying to stay in denial - her whole horsey lifestyle is at risk.
She'll cheat - then she'll hate herself - he'll find out and get righteously angry (cause "it's different for men") and she'll apologize to HIM!
I loved that last scene. TV never does awkward silence with camera angles like that. And, just when I was thinking "Is this really television?" she earled on her dress (the one thing she got props for all evening!) Don's trophy wife puke's in his trophy car ... (cut to credits) Frikkin' awesome.
Laurie B: It appears that neither Don nor Betty is aware of what Jimmy said to them individually, but both are reeling.
Ritt: Jimmy may not get his 39 episodes after all. There will be retribution.
25centgas: Betty may not seek revenge by looking for someone else – but I agree – she’ll be the one who apologizes.
Visan: This show is too good for basic cable. I’m thinking premium cable shower scene.
....sorry, what is SAB? i came in late, but i've seen that before....
.....Some random thoughts……..
All that "garbage" floating around in this episode, Draper feeling like garbage inside for days or weeks now, Draper buying the spanking new car symbolizing a fresh clean start, then Jimmie pasting a big, fat "G" on Draper's chest.
Like the Road Runner cartoons – Draper is Wile E. Coyote, running down the road his whole life (in his case, away), and this is the big ACME anvil….
The running and the hiding are over, and Draper is finding himself for the first time in unknown territory. He has never TOLD the truth before, and doesn't know HOW to do "authentic," which is why he has no answer for Jimmie Barrett.
IMHO, it’s not just that Jimmie was accusing Draper of cheating with Bobbi, he was accusing him of lowly, tainted motives and slimy methods in general. You know, cheating as a lifestyle just because you can get away with it.
Betty yakking in the car at the end of this episode was just icing on the cake. (Forget the car - that beautiful dress!) I felt extremely sorry for her as I was laughing my ass off. The second she did that, I knew it would go to credits and a great song. (Mad Men writers like those last-minute TKOs…. they must have the funnest jobs in the industry.)
Between Bert Cooper reminding Draper he knows about the past, Bert calling in the first "favor" by assigning Draper to philanthropy, and finally being confronted for his cheap and cheating ways, Draper to me is like Humpty Dumpty.
The one thing in life Don Draper isn't prepared for is coming face-to-face with Dick Whitman. And you just know this philanthropy gig is going to unearth someone who knows Dick Whitman or the real Donald Draper.
If you think Betty is going to freak when she confronts Draper about his cheating ways (and remember she knew about it in the first season – said as much to her therapist), imagine what she will do when she finds out her husband is an impersonating a person.
More and more with this series, I kind of get the feeling that all these loose ends we keep trying to join together aren't meant to be joined at all…..
It seems, more and more each episode, that we are viewing a long, slow slide-show, very much like in The Carousel... slice-of-life snapshots of seminal moments, in the lives of characters we have come to care about.
People (including me) have suggested this series is like a soap opera and I'd have to disagree with that now. To me, it’s becoming more like a series of small plays, or performance art, maybe.
Either way, I'm not touching a prediction for next week with a ten-foot pole. I can't imagine, but I know it's a guaranteed surprise.
