Well, that hand-up-the-dress bit with Don and Bobbie was a bit disturbing! I could have lived without that but I could understand Don was getting desperate!

user-pic

scfan, yes i like the term disturbing better that shocking,Also Bobbie overpowered Don in the car, this was a way to get back at her,for his weakness at that moment..

user-pic

Yes he had to do something--anything--to try to get her (?) attention. I posted a few days ago on some other area of the forums that I do hope Don doesn't end up with the clap--or the syph (!) after his unfortunate contact with that skank!

The scene with Glenn opening the bathroom door while Betty was on the john was the most uneasy one in season 1. I won't say it was shocking, but it stood out most.

In season 2, so far, the most shocking scene, to me, was Don filling Bobbie's bar order of "2 fingers straight up."

There's lots more time left for even more shocking scenes in season 2

Right now I'm fervently praying that the don't show Bert Cooper doing kabuki

Shocking in the sense that it was so heartbreaking: Don giving Adam 5Gs to get lost forever. Felt that into the pit of my stomach.

I gasped when Peter took the box intended for Don and marked personal. The story line played out okay...so far!...but that violation of privacy hit me.

user-pic

Peter stealing Don's box! What an assy thing to do!

default userpic

I can't say that it was rampant, but violation of privacy, was not an uncommon occurrence during the Mad Men days.

i.e.: the Mexican family and chickens in Pete's office; Ken's chasing down one of the secretaries at the office party just to see what color panites she was wearing; a copy of Joan's driver's license appearing on the bulletin board.

When I was a Mad Man in the '60's, a lot of those days in the office were so filled with pranks that it seemed like summer camp. And nobody was really that bothered by it -- except for a few 'bluenoses'.

And, of course, Pete's incursion into Don's life was going over the border, though.

The scene with Pete and Adam gave me mixed feelings. I had really expected Don to put a period to Adam's existence. But, Don did have a sense of kinship with him -- and at least had the heart to give him money to start a new life for himself.

I thought that was a decent resolution to the situation. It was shocking that Adam later hanged himself. And the tragedy there is that it was his choice not to move forward.

user-pic

I still don't get why Adam felt the need to hang himself. Doesn't make sense. I guess he just felt like Don had now rejected him twice and he just wasn't thinking straight. Hard to figure...the guy was a good actor, wish they hadn't killed him off.

user-pic

I agree w/ wryter1 on the Glen & Betty episode. Talk about bizarre. That was definately 1 super strange kid & Betty was no help. Weird!!!!

Adam hanging himself fit the character, I thought. We have only seen a few glimpses of that household from hell where the two boys grew up. We know that whatever went on, the older son, Dick, preferred to die to get away from it. Adam may have struggled for years under the wrath of his parents. Adult Adam had a low paying job, probably little education and was alone in the world and might have still been haunted by his parent's words. Seeing his dead brother alive and on the train may have been a defining moment in his life. His parents didn't want to hear what he was saying and didn't believe him. He may have been punished for continuing to speak of it. I think, for more reasons than Don, Adam might have thought of suicide before that last time. Don's rejection was a closing of a door. What happened to the money?

default userpic

Oh, and that scene where the couple is being enticed by a bottle of Viagra...

Ooooops! Sorry. That was a commercial.

user-pic

My jaw dropping moment was when Pete was in the office with the rifle! I thought..OMG, he snapped and killed Don!! Not to mention Betty popping off pigeons in the backyard the Red Ryder BB gun. I bet PETA is boycotting the show as we speak over that scene! Not to mention every bird lover in the country.

user-pic

I vote for:
Boy Glen seeing Betty on the toilet and then him asking for a lock of her hair. Weird kid.

Then Betty on the lonely road, flirting with the mechanic, was very odd.

Of course, Betty shooting the pigeons!

Adam's hanging, Pete buying a gun and Peggy's "Great Reveal": having a baby she didn't know she was having.

Roger telling Joan what a great piece of ass she is. Couldn't believe my ears!

Also, Roger making a pass at Betty in their own home. And then, Don grabbing Betty's arm in a brutish way. Especially since Betty had done absolutely nothing wroing. I thought Don's behavior there was terrible.

How about Roger puking his guts out in front of everyone?

user-pic

Oye Vey Gail Klein Yeah Roger pitching his cookies,Thats the last time we ate while watching the show...

default userpic

How about Sally getting drunk. Don picks her up passed out, the glass drops, he doesn't even notice...

user-pic

I was pretty surprised in the first episode that Peggy slept with Pete after he was such a prick all day in the office. I would have kicked his chauvonistic ass, but I grew up after women's lib.

The biggest surprise was definitely Don giving it to Bobbie at the restaurant. I knew that Don was capable of something dark and cold, but this shocking. Hands down (or should I say hands up) the most shocking MM moment!

user-pic

*Season 1* When Don is lying on Rachel's chest, and he tells her his mother died in childbirth too, and she was a prostitute. Just a mindblower for his minimalist delivery, and telling her (and not Betty).

*Season 2* The obvious choice, Don giving Bobbie the finger. I guess you could say Don's "creative" in handling difficult business situations. Makes me wonder what he'll do next time, especially if it's a difficult man?

I have to agree with Jolie10
"Boy Glen seeing Betty on the toilet and then him asking for a lock of her hair. Weird kid".
And I never understood Peggy's attraction to Pete, who I think is a pompous ass.
And tonight's episode where Don threw the toy agains the wall, and the Draper's got into a shoving match...that kettle is about to blow!

user-pic

Actually, it was really shocking that Mr. Cooper didn't care that Don had a stolen identity. All that build-up with Pete and the damn box of secrets, and Cooper's response is "who cares?". Watching Pete squirm was pretty delicious though.

user-pic

Can I offer you some more popcorn, Christopher?

user-pic

Jamm54 ,No!!! Can't eat crunchy foods while watching Mad Men,too much sound in my head from chewing. But Thank you anyway...

default userpic

There has been absolutely nothing disturbing in either season, but I do have to take remove my mamby pamby wussy 2008 model eyes and ears before watching.

user-pic

This wasn't a shocking moment, but hard to understand. Don leaves to get Sally's birthday cake, obviously a bit drunk and never returns. He merely tolerated the adult guests at the party. Why did he marry and have children and settle in the suburbs when he has contempt for that lifestyle? Just to prove to himself the could be a decent husband and father?

I do have to say one thing... Don Draper is definitely worth watching, he is one hunk of a man!

This show is the most exciting show to come to television in I don't know when

user-pic

Wryter1, that was an Asian family with chickens in Pete's office, not Mexican. Remember, Peggy called them "Oriental" which was the term used at that time.

I think the most shocking scene to me was when Don gave Adam the money to get lost. I know Don was panicking, but really, this was his little brother and he had deserted the kid twice - once when he faked his death and again when Adam found him.

The scene with Roger and Betty in the Draper kitchen was shocking - I didn't think even Roger was that low and I thought Betty was just being friendly, I didn't see that as flirting, but apparently Don and Roger thought differently.

There were a few other shocking scenes, but I think Don's scenes with Adam and last night with little Bobby were the most poignant scenes of the series so far.

I just watched the episode again this afternoon, and I just marvel at how excellent this cast is, not a weak link in the bunch - Colin Hanks, who sounds a lot like his father, fits in the cast as if he's ben there from day one. Too bad he's just a "visiting" priest. Elizabeth Moss' facial expression when Father Gil handed her the blue egg was absolute perfection - what an actress!

chopin47

Asian, Mexican -- they all look the same to me. :>)

What disturbs me is I can't find a likeable character. How can the lead (Don) not have any redeeming qualities? He is boring me. Let's make a "creative director" appear creative.

The Adam suicide was telegraphed to me immediately when he showed up.

What is going on with the characterization of the kids? One episode - they completely ignore that Don even walks in the door and in another you hear "Daddy....Daddy."
My kids were ecstatic when Dad came home from work.
Let's make these children a little more realistic, please.
And no chattering at meals? Very strange indeed.
Betty seems to serve a lot of pasta. She is being depicted as weight conscious. Is it easy on set or something?

default userpic

The scene with Roger riding the twin Maribou or Marigold, or whatever she was called, out of the office. I think the most shocking thing about it was her Peptobismal pink bra and girdle.

user-pic

I was shocked when Duck took the leash and collar off his beautiful Irish Setter dog and let him loose. It was heartbreaking. I'm hoping to see Chauncy again and in good hands.
